Merry Christmas, thanks for the content! I always thought that the Yamashiro had such an odd design, especially with that tall, thin tower of a bridge.
The movie "In Harm's Way" (1965), in the latter part of the movie, sorta, somewhat, replicates the Battle of Surigao Strait and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On the eve before the battle, two officers are on the Admiral's bridge of a heavy cruiser talking: Egan (Burgess Meredith): "I'm so scared that my bones are clicking, like dice on a Reno craps table. I should be in Hollywood, in front of a typewriter, making all of this up for a movie, not living it." Rock (John Wayne): "Battles are fought by frightened men who'd rather be someplace else." This is a great movie and it is one of two WW2 movies where you see capital ships slugging it out on the high seas.
The radical reconstruction that included the cool towering forward pagoda superstructure and one stack plus longer stern occurred in the early-mid 1930s. It was the USN destroyers that sunk the Fuso and Yamishiro with torpedoes -- which had been fitted with British invented Torpex that was about half again as powerful as TNT. The Fuso took two fish, probably from the Fletcher class USS Melvin, and never came under rifle fire from the US battle line. The Yamashiro did take shell hits, but they were not critical. It was the many torpedoes she had absorbed that put her into sinking condition and resulted in her capsizing soon after coming under gunfire.
I wonder if the torpedo that failed to detonate was one of the still defective ones from earlier in the war. After Pearl Harbor sub commanders began to complain about torpedoes that either failed to detonate, detonated too early or veered off course. It appears that in order to save money the Navy never fully tested the Mark 14 torpedo used in subs or the Mark 13 used in the Torpedo bombers. They never ran live test, preferring to recover fired test torpedoes and reuse them. In defense of the Navy there was a shortage of torpedoes since manufacturing had not caught up to demand. Early in the war sub commanders were told to fire 1 torpedo per target which is nuts. More than a few Japanese ships got away unharmed.😮 The Mark 13 had similar problems to the Mark 14 but it mostly ran too deep thus passing under ships. In the early 1942 raids against Japanese Naval Instillations not a single torpedo launched from the bombers even made a dent in a Japanese ship. The same was true in the Battle of Midway where so many Torpedo bombers were sacrificed without scoring a single hit. It took the Navy 2 years to finally work out all the bugs in their torpedoes. Just a thought.🤔
