    Big shout out to Sinistral, despite people calling you "fat", you stand above that. You crush these stages with armor on and desert sun burning you. You seem to be very eduacated, smart and funny. When you laughed at the 19:50 mark, i lost it. Have good one, i'm looking forward for day 2.

    The paper stages clearly suit some shooters but not others. From a video viewer perspective I also find paper stages less interesting to watch - less reaction from the targets, more confusion as to what's what - much the same reasons, but without the pain :-) Thanks for presenting the match. Both of your shooting skills seems to be standing up well under the conditions.

      I agree with the guys too many paper targets in weird positions for that last half. It felt tedious just watching it I can only imagine having to shoot them all. The shoot house looked fun even the wall but after that they could have stopped and it would have been a perfectly fine stage. Maybe start with the dummy and move it into the house just to get the exercise in there, instead of dragging if from cover into the open. It makes Karl's I hope you die have a different meaning.

    @Karl - your closing credits remarks: they were my "Belfast 1975" revisited, except that the only place to go eat was the very basic troops diner (in a portakabin), the 'something to eat' was a DIY fried egg sandwich, and the 'Air B'n'B' was a bunk in a portakabin with anti-mortar mesh and sandbags on the roof. 24 hours, 2 hours patrolling, 2 hours in the base (patrol debrief, eat, sleep - briefly - wake, mug of tea, pre-patrol orders, 2 hours patrolling, rinse and repeat).
    Frankly, everybody kinda looked forward to a Contact, to break the goddam' monotony :-D

    I'm so glad you offer commentary at the end of each stage. So many shooters just put up videos of the action without any discussion of it. It's always interesting to hear what you think afterwards. I'd love to do this match some day, but who knows if I'll ever be able to make it out west. Anyway, enjoyed the video and good shooting to both of you!

    I'll double-down on my previous comment: RO coaching is a bug, and speaks to poor stage design.

    • @SinistralRifleman
      @SinistralRifleman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      N JJ yet the best scores on this stage didn’t require it. While I don’t prefer stages like this it doesn’t mean they’re bad designs.
      Historically Multigun matches with longer 5-10 minute stages have always had coaching. If that’s not your thing stick to venues with shorter 30-60 second stages.

    • @NRJenzenJones
      @NRJenzenJones 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am definitely not suggesting it is the largest factor affecting score.

    • @SinistralRifleman
      @SinistralRifleman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think what you’re not understanding is that on stages 1-4 where neither of us needed coaching, less experienced or lower skill level shooters did to remind them what to do next. Coaching is there to help people make it through and do things in the proper sequence if you need it. If you’re good you’ll never need it. If you need it you’ll probably want the help.

    • @echo3389
      @echo3389 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Coaching is actually prohibited in USPSA except at level 1 matches under very select circumstances. I think with this type of match though you can have the RO coaching and not hurt the "integrity" of the match or stage, as A VP says it does emphasize a different skill set.

    • @echo3389
      @echo3389 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      minor clarification: non RO coaching is prohibited. ROs in general won't coach unless, as some have said, it's a bad design.

    I feel like Karl's run was pretty good, considering. Shame about the slip on the wall, but the pistol shoothouse felt pretty fluid. Also the squeeky voiced supportive RO was cute. Good coaching on the rifle chunk. Sinistral did good, considering, at the wall! Awesome coaching by the RO. That all being said, this looks more brutal than the desert brutality. Not in the actual stages, really, but as you mentioned, just the amount of stuff in one day. Karl looks outright pissed. Hope that the second day was more enjoyable for you guys.

    Helpful heath tip, if you have to have your caffeine in the form of a drink other than coffee, the zero calorie or low calorie drinks are actually worse for you than drinks with full sugar. The reason being is your bodies metabolism is increased due to the caffeine and is in need of calories. Also you are at a greater risk of kidney stones from the zero sugar since the sweetener they use in non digestible and will sit in your body longer than it is supposed to.

    There is a reason why fitness is one of the primary things that are trained up, drilled in and emphasized in military (and even LEO) training. Regular, 3-5 times a week of intense cardio exercise (plus at least a bit of weights) if not something like Crossfit or similar training is *Invaluable* to a LEO/military to maintain mental and physical health. Regular exercise nearly always helps with sleep and if you combine it with a healthy diet, one's ability to handle stress and perform is dramatically, if not profoundly enhanced. Plus, if someone does all of these things as part of a general lifestyle, how they will operate in emergency situations, such as a shootout, is, once again, dramatically improved, something that has been studied extensively.
    If you have never done something like the above, you cannot understand how much being exhausted will affect performance, physical and mental, including firearm accuracy/firearm operation including things like clearing jams, etc. As an aside, realize that it looks pretty warm and doing all of these competitive events under the hot sun also has a large effect on any physical activity, forget firearms performance.
    Obviously Russell is more practiced and accomplished with his firearms of choice, but IMO fitness and carrying those extra pounds played a role in his ability to do well (especially as one gets older). I suspect that if running around, clearing obstacles, firing from various positions, etc., wasn't integral to the competition, he might have actually even won - his accuracy was quite astonishing, especially at longer ranges.
    That all said, I think these guys did pretty good, especially since neither are LEOs, nor current military, and aren't 19 years old. So, hats off ! It was really interesting to watch.
    .

    Is there some way to know the evolution of the difference in score between armored divisions and non-armored divisions? It could be quite interesting to see how the weight of the armor affects shooting throughout the day. I would guess the more time passes the bigger the gap in score but how much?

    • @matthewconner5545
      @matthewconner5545 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Julien Avelange on this stage, everyone was armored. There were two provided plate carriers for those that didn’t have their own.

    • @julienavelange3960
      @julienavelange3960 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Conner but that is just this stage isn't it? What about the entire day ? What interests me is the impact of armor throughout the day as the shooter gets more and more exhausted

    • @SinistralRifleman
      @SinistralRifleman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Julien Avelange you’d have to know the order people completed stages in and currently the scoring system doesn’t track that data.

    Do a ballistic test on the mag. Does the amount of ammo in the mag affect your ability to throw in to a buddy for a reload. How far can you throw it, does it bounce on different surfaces and so on 😁 Ian might have a some cool old stuff for chucking it long distances (launching it with a blank from a old French rifle, grenade launcher style comes to mind) 😎

  • @aries_9130
    @aries_9130 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I really don't see the practical use of the "memory game" as Russell has been calling it that was going on in this stage. In my mind, stuff like that doesn't make you a better shooter - especially if there are ROs telling you which targets you still have to shoot. I'm not trying to say that the stage is bad per se, but it wouldn't be for me, I guess.

You can tell both guys are totally drained by the end of the day, and it's showing in the speed of their actions, especially Russell after the wall. This was where the wheels came off for the match. It was only our third of the day, and I was shooting well and moving through the maze without needing input from the RO...then I timed out. The wall kicked my fat ass, and while I didn’t fall off, I just took too long on it. Time to stop being fat, then. Also, one thing about this stage you didn’t mention (probably because it didn’t apply to you), but in this stage EVERYONE had to do it armored. There were two plate carriers provided by esstac for competitors.

    That wall went on for too long to be safe in a competition, and that maze of paper requiring coaching to get through it was a stupid stage, if they spaced targets out on a larger range they could have made it work, but that small maze just doesn't work well.

    • @SinistralRifleman
      @SinistralRifleman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Predatron AU they’ve used this wall since 2012 in a number of matches. There haven’t been any injuries on it more than scrapes and bruises to my knowledge.
      The paper target section did not require coaching the people that did the best on it didn’t require any. These matches have to appeal to a broad audience of shooters; this stage was one for the 3gunners and USPSA shooters.

    Sinistral: I believe you mentioned that you are running a vortex variable optic, but could you more fully discuss the optics and mounts you are using in the competition. Also it looks like you are running a red dot over the variable; any reason you chose to piggy back it as opposed to putting at a 45 degree angle as I have seen used by a number of competitors, in particular Jerry Miculek.
    Also great job by both of you in gutting it out at the end of the day.

    I'm reminded of watching the Discovery Channel BUDS class 234 and how the exhausted trainees' faces would light up when they got meals during hell week. Whenever I'm fed up with shit, I daydream of waffles now.

      scruffy da real OG if you’ve ever seen Ultraman or Evangelion, where there’s a timer counting down before out of power, that’s kind of what it feels like shooting some of these stages.

    There is wisdom in this.
    Never sell a cursed item, not unless you know the shopkeep and they are made well aware of it and all its quirks and etc..
    Like, if they're selling curios and relics, i think they'd love a weird cursed sword that swears at the wielder.
    But selling it to Lucinda the general goods merchant is not going to go over well with Lucinda the general goods merchant.

    That stupid steel "casualty" you have to move is what sent me to the ER. Bad part I was resetting it when I hurt myself.

    • @donaldweber7636
      @donaldweber7636 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I was resetting it after another shooter and apparently I seriously strained some abdominal and back muscles. Ended up going to the ER four times over two weeks because the pain, and other complications, were more than I could handle on my own. I'm 95% healed now, but spending 7 weeks sleeping upright on the couch because it hurt too much to lay down wasn't fun.
      Ended up only shooting stages 5, 6, and 7.

      I feel your pain, as someone who shears sheep as a job, you spend all day bent over (at like palms flat on floor with straight legs kinda bent over) and some of the sheep I have to shear can weigh from 50 - 100+ kg. And carrying them out of the trailer is mostly what tires your back. However the more you do it, the stronger your back gets.

    If you could do it safely, fill that 60 round mag, and see what happens when it gets hit by bullets(pehaps inside an old safe?). It might be interesting and even scientific video of things that might happen on field... get Ian to do his slowmotion footage... ...and this time not to make a mess of it =P

    • @pdittrich
      @pdittrich 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Demoranch has done that. Loaded up a pmag (iirc) with .223 (iirc) and shot it. One or two rounds would get smashed and ripped, maaaaybe cooked off, and of course the mag got broke. I think the mag pouch got singed slightly but that could also be due to the incindiary boolit. Didn't really hurt the dummy at all.

    • @theana86ar
      @theana86ar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the point was that they could have scientaining contet and have fun whilst shooting it, and on the case of the mag pouch... better idea, attach it on a gun and shoot the living daylight IN to it, and then mud test it xD Seriously i just kinda wanted video like their explodin bullets video, if there is lore about magazines gettin hit(there was a video of Ian's about one french mg that got hit by burst of bullets so the lore and actual effects of what would happen is kinda interesting) . Do you even notice if your magazine is hit by a bullet in a heat of a battle until you get malfunction?

    I'm not yet 4 minutes in, we have barely done with the walkthru, and already it's clear that this shoot was designed by somebody who didn't think the events portrayed in 'Blackhawk Down' were a sufficient test of American fortitude and skill-at-arms. It's nutz.
