    So, based on ATK's advice, I bought the "Best Buy" Fagor Duo 8-quart when it went on sale for less than $100. I picked it up today, and I can hardly wait to start using it. A quick function test showed everything to be working correctly, and just about fool-proof to operate. I didn't see (or I forgot) that it includes a steamer basket and "trivet" to raise the basket above the water, and I suspect I'll be using that as often as anything else. Thanks ATK.

    Fagor isn't what it used to be, sent mine back and got a Presto. Oh my gosh, I am so happy with it. Got the latest one. Customer support was really excellent when I had a question and you can get parts easily. I love the 6 quart, always had the 8 quart but the 6 quart is nice and straight and handles everything I used to put in the 8 quart. p.s. I always spray in the inside before I use it and after it is washed, I put a little olive oil on a paper towel and wipe it shiny. I just needed to share that for some reason.

    Thank you for the review. I was looking to buy one and knew I did not want it occupying the counter full time. I also wanted to use the pot for general non-pressure cooking. I settled on the Fissler which you mentioned came in number one in your test. I so much appreciate the no-nonsense review and element of science used in discussing the importance of achieving and maintaining pressure. This is the third product I've purchased based on your testing, in each case, I have been pleased with my (our) purchase decision. Thank you for the invaluable service. I'm a devoted admirer and would not consider buying something that was not on your list.

    For most cooks the well priced American made Presto stainless steel pressure cooker works very well. It reaches the necessary 15psi and is cheaper than all others except maybe the Indian made cooker. My mother used a Canadian made aluminium 6 qt Presto for over 40 years. I recently replaced the seals and the pressure regulator which had developed legs and walked away and still use it for non acid foods.

    The best pressure cookers are sold in Indian grocery stores and on Amazon. It's called "Prestige" and made of pure heavy stainless steel. I bought myn for $40. It makes "whistling" noises each time pressure is let out. Each dish has a specific number of these "whistles" before you turn off the stove. It is super handy and the quality is fantastic.

    Presto IMO makes the Best Pressure cooker, Mine was handed down to me from my mother 20 years ago and she had it for 30 years before that, 10 years before I was born. My wife bought a 22 Qt. pressure cooker from Presto for canning 3 months ago and it is the same quality as the one my Mother gave me. Very heavy gauge stainless steel and the seals are easy to find if you ever need to replace them. They aren't cheap the 22 Qt. I believe was just over 200 USD. But it will last a life time and then some they are the Lamborghini of pressure cooking.

    I have the Fargor Duo 8 Quart and 4 Quart, got them both second hand and yes they are the made in Spain versions. I couldn't live without either one, next on my list is a pressure canner but wow those are pricey.

    • @wholeNwon
      @wholeNwon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all. I've seen aluminum pressure canners on Amazon for very reasonable prices. If you're going to be doing any significant amount of canning, I'd recommend avoiding the very heavy aluminum models...usually without gaskets and multiple screw clamps. They take far too long for pressure to drop so your recycling times are very long. That's important. They are also very heavy.

    Yes, but check the instructions. For example, the Fagor one states: NOTE TO ELECTRIC STOVE USERS
    Since the coils on an electric stove retain
    heat for a long time, food often becomes
    overcooked when the burner is turned
    down for simmering (when cooking time
    is started). To compensate for that, you
    have two options:
    more detail than can be posted here

    • @9999plato
      @9999plato 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had no problems. I use med to high heat to get pressure though I find it best to get your food cooking to a high simmer with the lid OFF. Then add the lid, heat to get to pressure and roll the temperature to the lowest setting on the large burner ring. The food cooks perfectly and I lose NO steam from my Fissler pressure cooker at 15 lbs pressure.

  • @LaraineAnne

    I bought the smallest Fagor Duo. I think that's 4 quarts. It was made in Spain. Many people consider this size useless, but they are wrong. If there are only two of you and/or you have arthritic hands you do NOT want to have to lift anything bigger. So take these facts into consideration. I consider a pressure cooker an absolute must for making soup. It is worth having a pressure cooker if you do nothing but make soup in it. Nothing makes soup stock like a pressure cooker. And once the vegetables are added it's only a matter of minutes and I have the most delicious soup imaginable. You can't buy canned soup that's even half as good as what you make yourself. Chicken soup and ciabatta bread for lunch anyone? :-)

    • @bonzaibb12
      @bonzaibb12 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Laraine Anne Barker Love the soup tip. I make my own and can't wait to taste the difference. I normally spend 10 hours to get every bit of flavor out of a large chicken.

    • @VeganPatriot
      @VeganPatriot 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Laraine Ann Barker I think smaller pressure cookers are great! They reach pressure really quick and therefore finish cooking much faster. I often use more than one pressure cooker at a time and if you are used to that kind of cooking it really helps to have different size pots

      Laraine Anne Barker;
      I agree. I just purchased the 4 qt Fagor Elite pressure cooker and so far I love it! It's the perfect size for 2 people. has 2 pressure settings and I love how Fagor makes the 4 qt pots low and wide rather than tall and skinny. Very easy to use and wow, does it come to pressure fast! I have a 6 and 10 qt also which of course take longer to do this. I steamed baby potatoes in it in just 5 minutes. VERY useful in my kitchen! :)

      @mellowman1001 Anybody who makes a pressure cooker explode either uses an aincent one from the 50s or doesnt know how to use it. End of story. They are incredibly simple. NO pressure cooker should be filled above the manufacturers recomedation (around 3/4). Since they all have redudnant safeties I can only guess the pot was filled too high for the type of food, the pressure bleed and safety became cloged with food and gunk, pressure was too high (should only need the absolutely lowest heat once at pressure) and she blew. No amount of safety engineering can overcome misuse.

      Why bother? I have used stove top pressure cookers for over 60 years. You can't fix stupid. Don't blame the device for operator error. One time, in all the years that included many years in a commercial kitchen, did we ever have an incident. The safety features in the stove top pressure cooker worked perfectly. One of our employees over filled a bean recipe and the beans clogged the pressure regulator. The safety plug did what it is designed to do and we had a bean painted ceiling. Did not think it was funny at the time but my Dad and I still laugh at the mess it made. Can pressure cookers be dangerous? Only at the Boston Marathon.

    I bought a Kuhn Rikon despite the bad test score in terms of evaporation in this test.
    I am glad to report that during my own test, the seal was actually excellent with no visible steam nor "bubble sound" suggesting any leaks.
    I did check the manual and found that the vent will automatically vent if the pressure is too high - so this simply suggests the heat was too high during cooking.I guess its a failure on AMT's part. They should redo the test.

    love my Fissler, I paid $260 in 2009. I have been using it minimal twice a week for 9 years. Spare rib only takes 15min to cook, off bone. Though it cost me a little bit fortune upfront, but well worth it. I also own instantpot duo 6. It is good to make stock, stew, but any dish calls sauté, such as braised pork, buttered chicken, the result is not ideal. The temperature is not as high as fissler, all the fat retain in the meat, which makes it really greasy. I am not saying electric pressure cooker is bad. It has other great features, preset program is very handy. Also I like yogurt making feature, so easy and convenient.

    No need to spend so much money on this. I bought a Presto 6 qt. and an 8 qt., both in stainless steel. They're wonderful! I love how easy they are to use and dependable. It's also easy to find replacement parts and silicone gaskets for them. I went with the Presto brand because the company has been making these cookers for decades. They have very good customer service as well.

    • @madthumbs1564

      Funny how the Presto's meet their criteria but aren't even mentioned. Customer complaints about Presto are a screw (easily replaced) rusts (which I believe they fixed). The Fagor Duos need babying and the proprietary plastic parts are breaking (and poor service). More money from Amazon when you promote the more expensive product?

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think I saw a glimpse of the Presto 8 quart in the video where she was explaining how some of the pressure indicator valves were hard to see. Speaking of the 8 qt Presto....I no longer use mine. The lid is impossible to open and close, especially when it's hot. You have to put a lot of downward pressure on the center of the lid while also trying to rotate it using both handles. Not an easy feat with just 2 hands! It's a crappy design really. And while it's cooking, the pressure regulator won't stay in one spot as it's suppose to. It moves back and forth releasing copious amounts of steam and making a loud screeching noise that makes all of my pets run for cover. I still use my 6 qt pot but after more than a year of wrestling with the 8 qt, I've given up and purchased a Fagor Futuro 10 qt. The difference is like night and day! I made chicken broth in it first thing when I got it and it is wonderful! It's very quiet in comparison to both Presto models and it does a great job with cooking. The Presto website is also awful to try to navigate. When I called them to get help with my order for a replacement gasket, there was no one there who knew how to help me with their own website! Friendly people but clueless at tech issues. :(

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Presto cooker seals can be quite tight when new but quickly break-in over the course of a dozen or so uses.
      The Rocking of the regulator weight is just how the cooker is designed to work.
      The difference isn't so much a matter of daylight but instead about 2-3 times the cost for the Fagor. That's quite a difference.

    Well I have an aluminum one, made in Japan, more than 20 years old and I love it. It has the old style gravity-floating pressure knob, the handles are ebonite, all metal construction. The new stainless have thin walls (thats why food burns) and plastic handles. You can find barely used old ones at garage sales or estate sales. They built them thicker and better back in the day...either way great tool for your kitchen.

      Food burns because the cooks suck. Bakelite is a plastic that doesn't melt. 3rd generation pressure cookers are safer. - Have yet to see how older ones are better.

    A pressure cooker makes intensely flavorful fast food. The most important rule to remember is to let it stop making noise before opening. You can speed up the cool down by putting it under running tap water but it must be quiet and cooled. My ex failed to follow those very simple instructions while I was still at the office. Bean Wallpaper. Har. But no one died, nothing went ballistic, no eyes were put out.

      I agree it's awesome, but with some design flaws (like most others if not all). The handle could be better, it could have a quick release, and a lower pressure setting. All minor issues though. Some had a problem with the screws rusting, but I think Presto resolved that issue. I wouldn't trade my Presto for a more expensive brand.

    I purchased the fagor duo 8 quart after watching this video and doing some research. I cooked with it 7-8 times and now it doesn't hold pressure at the valve anymore. I've replaced the valve twice to see if it would fix the issue, and contacted Fagor. All they did was apologize and send another replacement valve, that still diddnt fix the issue. They are a waste of money long term, diddnt even last a year... My cheap aluminum presto lasted longer.....

      Cheap crap. Should have bought the Fissler. A THICK bottom that is the full with of the base, incredibly well built, super safe, cannot be opened till pressure iis zero. Worth the price. They guarantee that all parts (all seals wear) will be available for purchase for at least 10 years even if they discontinue any model. I have seen numerous complaints about Fagor. Sorry to say, you get what you pay for. The Fissler loses no steam vapor when set correctly.

      +America's Test Kitchen - All-American canners are considered the Cadillac of pressure canners. Made in the USA, they are expensive, are gasket-less, and I would enjoy seeing you rate these canners up against the cheaper, foreign-made models. We have two All American Canners, the 921 and 941. We don't cook soups in them because they are aluminum, but we found a stainless steel basked that fits inside of them, and we have no trouble doing meats and vegetables in them, using the stainless basket. We do a lot of food preservation so getting a good, reliable canner was important to us. I would be curious to see if the extra money spent was worth it! It does matter that it's American made to us, but still, how do they stack up to the other, cheaper models?

    The 8 quart Presto is good, (I own one), but the stainless is a little thin and has a tendency to burn food on the bottom. With a Presto, you have to keep flame at medium when brining to pressure and at VERY low to keep at pressure or you'll burn thick sauces.
    I think the Fargor 8 quart is better as it uses thicker-gauge stainless steel..
    The MIU 8 quart Professional is also wonderful and uses thicker gauge stainless than the Presto.
    Both the Fargor and MIU are about $40 more expensive, but they're worth just a little more money.

    Our family have used pressure cookers for 4 generations and currently have several stove-top models in various sizes and a few electrics that we use much less frequently. In fact, some lima bean soup is cooking in one now, as I type. That particular unit is from India (Manttra I think), was VERY inexpensive and has worked well for at least 14 years. I prefer units with a weight pressure regulator. There will be no variation in pressure as when a spring ages and they are very easy to adjust so that just a little steam escapes continuously....really fool-proof.
    Cleanup is easy, too, with no regulating device to disassemble. Obviously, for canning, the unit MUST reach a full 15psi. It's always best to use a cooker that is especially designed for pressure canning and to follow the latest DOA advice for food safety. There is absolutely no reason to spend a lot of money for a great pressure cooker and lots of reasons not to.

    Hold on a second there, regarding your pressure cooker temperature readings. Did you test one cooker at a time or all at the same time? Gas pressure varies, and if you have a busy kitchen at your studio, people are turning burners on and off at various times thus affecting the heat source for each measurement.

    Why wont my Fagor Duo pressurize!!? I got one for Christmas and it worked ok for a while but very hard to get it to pressurize. Not the gasket, it's the chincy plastic pressure control letting out too much steam. Finally it blew a hole through the handel when i tried holding it down to pressurize. Just try finding a replacement part! My last pressure cooker with the weight regulator was still going strong when the kids got me this new one. I unfortunately threw it out! arghh! Later I got my daughter a pressure cooker not realizing it was the same company as mine and the damn thing has not worked once right out of the box. Same issue wont pressurize.

      When I check on Amazon, it has some negative reviews from people. I seems to see a pattern of people having a defective experience with a good brand name product. I think it is perhaps that it is being sold on Amazon, that there may be some that are sold as "fake/copy/counterfeit" type of product. I may have to buy it straight from manufacture/company that makes it so I won't get the crappy fake one. That's just seems to be the pattern I am seeing with buying from Amazon. Yes, they are cheaper but also, have higher risk of getting fake one.

    I bought the Fagor and bumped it slightly with my elbow, pushing it to the right and wedging, when I released it it jumped its stop (!) and wedged too far to the left. I called and they told me the happens (WHAT?!), and to beat it with a rubber mallet (my brand new pressure cooker). It was too far wedged and nothing got it to move. This should not even be possible. They were good about taking the initiative to have someone call me after the first person I spoke with, but literally, after 90 seconds with this product I could see how awful it was and how poorly designed. Next I bought the Instant Pot. GREAT lid without any issues. I also bought the Fissler Vitavit since I live in two places and prefer a stovetop unit. The Fissler is built like a Mercedes or BMW. Great design. The Fagor is cheap and has serious design flaws and needs to come out with a new model to recommend them. America's Test Kitchen reviews should always be compared to real world Amazon reviews, because often they'll give glowing reviews, only to have Amazon contradict them. Avoid the Fagor. It's in serious need of a redesign.
