what is rap?
Rap, musical style in which rhythmic and/or rhyming speech is chanted to musical accompaniment. This backing music, which can include digital sampling, is also called hip-hop, the name used to refer to a broader cultural movement that includes rap, deejaying, graffiti painting, and break dancing.

I can’t believe how this is bringing me back to the summer of 2004 when I watched samurai champloo for the first time, at first I was like meh I bet it’s gunna be crap cause of the rap.... but man was I so wrong and it was actually almost life altering cause it gave me a more chilled outlook on life, the show the music and now years later I find this out of nowhere...wow ^_^
Damn you’re old
I think hiphop is great to hear in japanese is because every word has vowels next to them. Its easier to ryhme plus the beat is fucking fire.
Lyrics are literal. Yes the consonants do seem easy to an outsider, but forming complex rhymes for entire phrases for example is a somewhat difficult task and you gotta not sound ridiculous while doing it, hell it already is difficult in English but there's a little more fluidity. You don't have to end in vowels all the time in English but Japanese you only get five sounds. This is why you tend to hear random English outbursts because some artists just say screw it.
Just like Spanish :)
@@amaterachu1 ah ok
@@user-ip2ys5si3q and even more like Italian! You can write pretty much all Italian words in katakana and keep the proper pronunciation, except for 'L's of course.

Some fun facts about these groups, and some further recommendations.
Buddha Brand is most famous for their first shown song, Ningenhatsudenjô, and their combination of the japanese and english language in their bars. They consisted of DJ Masterkey, CQ, NIPPS and Dev Large (DL). NIPPS and CQ are still working together under the name Buddha Mafia, DL being the only MC not present had passed away 2015.
Tojin Battle Royale is mostly famous for their member Hatanai Atsushi. He dropped a banger album in 2014 "S.O.S.A.I". 100% a recommend.
Coma Chi is one of the earliest and most respected women in the J-rap community (together with Rumi I'd say). Her later work is a lot more acoustic after seeing how life was without electricity after the 2011 tohoku earthquake.
ECD (who tragically passed away to cancer 2018) was one of, if not the oldest rappers in the community, born 1960. He was famous for his political music and activism, critisizing the Iraq war, Shinzo Abe and nuclear power. A similar group to him is King Giddra and their legendary album "Sora kara no chikara".
Soul Scream is often compared to ATCQ in terms of their old school jazzy boom bap style. Most famous are they for their chilled out track "Hachi to Chou" (蜂と蝶). As for more jazzy hip hop I'd recommend Loop Junktion, Shuren the Fire, Olive Oil or Sweet William.
Microphone Pager was a group created after the disassemblement of Krush Posse, where one member went on to become the famous ex-yakuza DJ Krush. They steered J-rap to a more serious genre, contrary to Scha Dara Parr
Scha Dara Parr are one of the most iconic japanese old school groups. Their comic and funky style has often been compared to Beastie Boys (and they have a collaboration with Adrock). Their most famous album, "5th wheel 2 the coach" is a must listen, and Urban Grammar doesn't do it justice as representation.
Also if u like more experimental shit, 100% check out Tha Blue Herb. Absolutely one of the best rap groups to come from Japan.
Other not mentioned old-school groups are: Rhymester, Kimidori, RIP SLYME, Lamp Eye, Nitro Microphone Underground, Ozrosaurus and many more. But don't miss out on the new-school!

One of the only cultures that actually captured the spirit of the hip hop movement. The flow is legit. One blood.
It really helps being syllabically non-diverse... you have so many opportunities to pull a line out of nowhere that you could never do in English.
if you're interested, there are some really good rappers in china too
France is actually the second country when it comes to how big and authentic the hip-hop culture is there.
India is the next big thing I'd say. Rap community is growing tremendously here.
Some of the Artists have even achieved moderate international game, so I'd say it is working out well. The Underground scene is booking though.

deadass I don't know what to say except that I laughed
American rap when you're slaying your classmates with your AR15.
Old school rap give off such chill 90s vibes. Best thing to play in the background as you chill in your crib.
This is what Jin Sakai listen's to while fighting his enemies

When I say we doing a drive-by, I mean get your Toyota ready and sharpen your shuriken.

Title: Japanese rap while slaying with a katana
Song Lyrics: Have a nice day!!!
Ah yes, those slain enemies really had a nice day
Okay, now I just need the mental capability of killing someone, people worth killing, a katana, and the skill to use a katana to kill
sounds like a samurai Light Yagami
Hip Hop is a universal form discovered in NYC. Truly amazing. This mix is amazing.
This is like finding a new anime with a dope intro
Samurai Champloo vibes
Ikr so good
“Sunflowers don’t even have a scent, so wouldn’t that mean this samurai you’re looking for, doesn’t really exist?”
Samurai champloo, they are looking for a samurai who smells of sunflowers
I didnt think I needed this but I am sure glad it ended up in my recommended
You are my favourite discovery of 2022 so far! 💜
Ah yes...the Samurai Champloo vibes are strong in this one...

Great mix dude, cheers!
Blasting this in my room, glad my parents don't know Japanese
y not lol?
Would listen to JP rap in the car and around the house with my mom. She only understood the English curse words but 1 time she goes "I KNOW THEY'RE RAPPING ABOUT WEED! I DON'T KNOW HOW I KNOW BUT I KNOW, I CAN FEEL IT!!" She was right lol.
@@ThexDynastxQueen so?

😐
Oh fuck yea.
was in a nujabes marathon before I found this
Japanese rap and hip hop is so underrated
I respect a person who makes a samurai themed old school J-Rap playlist and resists to go the easy route and put in Shing02.
where was this when i needed to write my paper on samurai masculinity
You wrote a paper on samurai masculinity? That's the coolest thing I've ever heard
Obluda Thanks! that was the gist of my argument, I was looking into a Japanese author, Yukio Mishima and using gender and the samurai ideologies to analyse his works
@@nowherebuthereandnow Wow, I watch lots of old japanese films, that usually involve samurai (Akira Kurosawa) so it's super interesting to hear about this kind of stuff!
I would read that! Link?
you should check
Yuki to Matsu! One of the best mangas I've read.
This mix really has Samurai Champloo's vibes to it. #ripnujabes
Don't forget to give credit to the rest of the artists who did that OST, wasn't just Nujabes.
i love nujabes but for the love of god, give the man a rest, he wasn't the only one who made the ost.

"oneness" is pretty cool and smooth, i also enjoyed all the video, thanks for your effort.
20 seconds in and already made a new playlist
Rest in Power, the legendary rapper ECD who, among the very first generation of Japanese Hip Hop, kept fighting for the culture and the society at large until his last moment. I recall how big your voice was even without microphone or megaphone in those rallies against Abe's decisions and ones against racist scumbags.
He's one of the most consistent rappers ever. I have all his albums and they're all fucking amazing. He dropped like 15 albums and none of them are bad. That's unheard of. I was shocked when I found out he passed.
Who care who move think about life idiot chill out
after hearing this I want to have afro hair, white head band and a katana while slashing all enemy stand in my way too become the number one strongest in the world also get revenge
