    I think this was the last major piece that had to fall into place before the Lady could be docked. Guys, once she's docked don't be shocked if Texas overhangs the dock by several feet at either end. She's actually a little longer than the dock itself. It won't hurt anything, all of the key points that need support will get that support from keel blocks in the dock.
    The two most important things are that she will be safely supported well clear of the water, the dock is capable of handling at least 35 or 40,000 tons while Texas is ONLY 26,000 tons (probably less) and there will be plenty of room to work. Texas is 95'3" wide, the dock floor is nearly 200 feet wide.
    I wonder how long it will be before the dock is ready to receive the ship? Maybe a week ... or two?

      I was thinking the same about the size of Texas vs the dock. My first impression was “damn this thing is small.” In fact I thought it might have been a section of a larger dock. … in any case, measurements aside, I am just happy that Texas now has a chance of survival.

    so good the dock its coming to her. i was worried they would have to tow her to Mobile Alabama and she would sink on the way there

    • @robertf3479
      @robertf3479 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Texas will be towed from her current berth to the Gulf Copper yard in Galveston, something like 20 miles I heard. Taking the dock closer to the Texas was considered but it was decided that this would be safer both for the ship and the dock. Floating drydocks of this type are NOT designed to move under tow when nearly fully loaded, they aren't designed to take the added stresses and strains this would cause.

    As a kid (1960s'), I lived in Galveston, Tx. in the summertime, due to my real father living there. My father was a world-class Tool & Die Maker. Richard Cobb. Dad had an Apartment near the American National building. The place we lived in is still there. The red building at the corner of Postoffice St. & 20th St., on the second floor, on the corner, overlooking, Postoffice & 20th. The spring that I came down just after my 17th birthday, he handed me my Tool & Die Journeymen's Card. And become another world-class Tool & Die, Maker.
    I love Galveston! I hated Illinois! Where I am still today, and still hating it here!
    After being married, I really tried hard to move back to Galveston in the early 80s'. I worked for VANSKIKE SECURITY, INC. and a gun shop called GUNSMOKE. But it wasn't enough for my wife and I couldn't really blame her after coming from working for JOHN DEER HARVESTER. But I loved Harry and Nancy Vanskike, even though Harry was a first-class prick, who once took me out to a Wanch Barge, in the middle of the Gulf, and left me there for 10 &1/2 days and 11 nights.
    So I digress... I still count Texas as my true home. Because I love Galveston so much.
    At this point, my life is going through some major changes. My wife of over 45 years won't make another one, and I've been battling bladder cancer for 5 years. But her cancer is on a whole nother level. And lately, I may, or may not, have other issues. At 65, who knows.
    But if I remain in reasonably good shape after I lose my wife, I'd love to come down there to Galveston, my real home, and help work on the TEXAS. My real name is Michael G. Dawson (Cobb at birth). 309-203-6332

    Is that half of a overall drydock assembly?

    • @robertf3479
      @robertf3479 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was listening to the "Battleship Texas" livestream yesterday and the young man noted that this drydock had been damaged in an accident at another location with nearly half of it wrecked beyond repair, so what we are seeing is the half that survived and was repaired. They haven't bothered to repaint.
      The USN built several Floating Drydocks during WWII to support the Pacific Fleet. Several of those were built in independent sections that when fully assembled could hoist an Iowa class ship out of the water with no difficulty. Some of these sections were still in use into the 1980s (and may still be) or stored in "mothballs." Others were sold to civilian firms, again might still be in use.
      I don't know the history of this particular dock beyond that it apparently was built sometime in the 1970s and what the "Texas" gent mentioned. The dock had been in use in the Bahamas prior to Gulf Copper acquiring it.

      @@robertf3479 This specific drydock was created to service a very large cruise ship. While it was unfortunate that it got damaged, the salvaged portion was perfect for Battleship Texas.

    Hi if they have to replace hull playing under the blocks do they remove them? Is she going to get hull red below waterline?

    • @robertf3479
      @robertf3479 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that if plating resting on the keel blocks has to be replaced, the dock will be flooded down so the ship is afloat again. She can then be moved a few feet to allow access to those areas once the dock is raised again.

  • @thevillageblacksmith8550
    @thevillageblacksmith8550 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    so is that going to be big enough to handle the entire ship? or will texas be hanging off both ends like that one picture you see floating around the internet?

    • @BattleshipTexas
      @BattleshipTexas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the ship will hang off the ends just a bit but they are unsupported parts of the ship which are not a part of the keel blocking scheme of the ship. However, there will be work platforms which will extend from the ends to allow work to be done to the hull in those areas.

      @@BattleshipTexas Is there any chance of the Texas moving under it’s own power again? That would be a sight to behold. Could also bring in a lot more revenue, since people would likely be willing to pay a good bit just to take a ride on a battleship. Could maybe even make up for the extra cost of such a project, considering it would bring in many people, as you can’t really get a ride on a battleship elsewhere.

    • @BattleshipTexas
      @BattleshipTexas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheT-90thatstaresintoyoursoul Anything is possible with enough money but in this dry docking cycle we will be focusing on getting the ships hull water tight. That said, the amount of money required to get the boilers and engine rooms working again is probably a multi million, if not billion, dollar project. I reckon we wont have that kind of money fundraised in the near future.

    I hope she can old up her weight in the drydock . Lots of the hull is badlly rusted . The normal way of blocking the hull
    Might not work in her current condition . How are they going to get that under her hull .

      Hello, this was live streamed on TH-cam a little bit off shore. We have another livestream from that day where we are on shore and, as is the case with both live streams, a copy of the livestream was automatically uploaded by TH-cam at the conclusion of the livestream to our channel. That is why there are two text chats. One for after the live stream where it’s viewed like a video on our channel and one where people who were watching it live were commenting in real time.
