My son had a once in a lifetime find at a swap meet years ago. He was 8 years old. I gave him $5 to go buy whatever he could find. He came back with a handful of copper coins. Told me he found them in the bottom of someones box and paid $1 for them. They all turned out to be "Colonials" from the 13 colonies before the Revolution. Value came in at over 3K after sold.

I do the same thing as you. I’ve been self employed since 1998 doing nothing but going to yard sales, auctions, estate sales etc picking and reselling. Make a VERY nice living. One of my best hits was an 1800’s railroad lantern I bought for 35.00 and it sold for $7,550.00. A couple pieces of art I’ve made a few thousand each on. A 1920’s Coke sign that had the original TV Tarzan and Jane on it I paid $300.00 it sold for a tick over $4,500.00. It’s so much fun to do this. I’ve been at it long enough I have people bring me stuff now to buy from them directly.
I bough a red 12” Fiesta vase from a widow estate sale for $75.00 and it sold for a little over $1,500.00 so I went back and gave the old lady an additional $500.00. She told all her old lady friends about it and I got to go look at a lot of other houses from that act of kindness.

They are from Korea. We know of them as “Horse Passes” or “Ma-pay” (spelling may be wrong). Number of horses signified the rank of official, couriers to high ranking officials such as inspectors/spies. Original are dated (old!) and valuable, repro still $15-40 each. You have ALL FIVE! Most probably repro from us Vets that bought while stationed there and brought back. Good buy!

@@beardedthriftmachine We have something very similar in the UK that we call "horse Brasses", they are saddle and harness decorations. Really old horse brasses are worth a little bit but there have been so many reproductions over the years that ID'ing then is next to impossible for the layman, my guess these are the Asian version of that.

      They are 100% souvenirs.
The real ones appear to be almost black due to the age and carrying around. And the horses were not this charming. The numbers of the horses on them show that they can use upto that many horses at any station they drop in. Ma-Pae

I was writing a book on the POW- MIA issue and I went to yard sales and thrift stores to buy books and magazines that I could use for research. I bought a book for $.35 cents and read it and got lots of good information, I was looking on a site for used books and saw the same book for sale. I put the book up for sale for $500, but settled on $400.
I also bought a complete set of Time-Life books on the Vietnam War for $8.00 and later sold the set for $60.00 with a couple other books.

I had a once in a lifetime yard sale find over forty years ago. I was at a garage sale looking at a box of costume jewellery, I checked several strings of pearls by rubbing them on my teeth. One felt scratchy! I put the string back in the box and said "how much for the whole box?" I paid five bucks! When I got home, close inspection revealed two pearl necklaces, a hand carved cameo set in gold with pearls and a pair of gold wedding bands! I sold the gold rings for cash later that day at a pawn shop, using some of the money to restring and clean the pearls witch I sold on consignment at a local jewellery shop for big bucks. The cameo I sent to Mom for mothers day.

She was pleased that all this gaudy, mostly plastic junk would find a good home, she said she almost tossed it in the trash. My Mpls neighborhood has a "Festival of Garage Sales" the first weekend in May every year. You can pay to have your sale listed by address on a map with a description of goods. Saturday is the big day, but some do Friday and hardly anyone does Sunday. Monday morning is garbage day and many people shove what didn't sell to the end of the driveway to get rid of it. Last year doing my Sunday afternoon "alley shopping" (which I do every week) I got a re-issued Stickley mission oak clock, a 12" h. pair of English porcelain vases, 3 table lamps, partial set of Czech kitchen pottery canisters, 2 crappy lamps for parts...all from one place! Free! I sold the clock- sells new for $499- for $225. ;)

Horse Requisition Tokens or mapae, probably reproductions of originals from the Joseon Dynasty. The horse pass or mapae was issued to officials of the central government of Joseon when they were ordered to make an official trip to regional areas. It was a certificate that permitted the use of the government horses kept at the stations of transportation hubs around the country. One side of the horse pass usually has a certain number of horse heads representing the holder’s rank, and on the other the date of issuance and the seal of Sangseowon (Office of Seals and Badges), a government agency responsible for the passes.

My best find was a loss. A friend gave me over 300 paper back books. I separated them by author/title genre. I had a complete set of Tarzan. A buyer offered $10 for the set. I said sure. He picked up the first book in the series and said, “Keep the rest. This one is a first edition.” He walked away smiling and I made $10.

I get that she’s extremely smart , I get it’s her channel as well, I also understand she’s a tell it kinda like it is person ( so am I , I generally like that ) however, then there is just rude and disrespectful. That is where she has taken her channel . I had to pack my stuff and leave. I don’t like watching folks getting belittled and degraded. Then I was very blessed and found your channel !! 🤩⭐️😍 you always impress me how very polite and nice you are with everyone. Now your teaching your girlfriend how to negotiate respectfully. What a fun find in these copper medallions, the writings on these medallions are all in Traditional Chinese. I have seen them with different years. These are indeed from a branch of the Korean government. However, this piece(5 horse) has a date mark that is using a Chinese emperor “Yongzheng” to date it. It says “Yongzheng 8th year, June. The day for June is blank. The others that I have seen have a definite day of the month. This Chinese emperor came to power in 1722 when his father died; this means 1722 is his 1st year in power. This medallion says “Yongzheng” 8th year, meaning 1730, if these were real. However, you should consult some Chinese or Korean experts on these most interesting medallions. Good luck.

I stopped at a yard sale that was over and they had put boxes of books on the curb marked ‘free’. I was thumbing through a few and found a couple hundred dollars cash!! I went to the door to give it back to the owners but the house was empty, the owners had moved out!

My Cantonese/Chinese mother says the medallions are an old official postal/messenger system insignia. Kinda an imperial stamp to show their authentic authority around the country. The number of horses indicates the level of authority/position/importance and the holes were used to string usually a ribbon through to tie to something or hold. The writing on the back is Qing dynasty and is an indication of date. In most oriental cultures they didn't have a numbered year but would write "This year of ***** emperor of **** dynasty" to mark the date.
If it's a knock-off for tourists it's just cool, but if you have a genuine article... *&^&%&%#@$@@%%^!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And ALL FIVE?!?!?!?!!!
If you think it's worth it to drag to authenticate I would do so. (Can't feel, smell, look for little markers from the video, so...*shrug*) (A previously close family friend deals in Orient antiques and dropped a few pointers.)

If you haven’t heard, they are Chinese messenger titles. These were given to the messenger going to report to the King. 1=top guy, general. 2-slightly less rank. 3-lesser rank from 1 & 2. 4 is usually a death sentence. When something goes really wrong; reporting this to the King means death. So, that’s why 4 is considered bad luck. Usually when these are made; the 4 talon is skipped. So, these must be modern. 5-is usually a very low rank but can’t send him with apologies to the King on things going wrong. So, 4 was the unlucky winner.
