I watch Miniac and Ninjon, but it was you that actually got me to lick my brushes. It was the eyebrow action that won me over.
Happy to provide satisfaction 😘
Disgusting- I literally have to look away..ugh
I struggled so hard with Contrast paints that I almost gave up on them, chalking them up as 'paints with a weird behaviour I can't quite wrap my mind around'.
Then I found your tutorial, tried it out, and immediately knew life would never be the same from this point on.
Thank you so much for enlightening us with the correct way to use those paints.
Can't stress enough just how important it is to constantly reload your brush, something I was very reluctant to do at first, as it seemed utterly counterintuitive. One has to be very bold and brave when using these paints and your video made me take this leap of faith, with immediate, breathtaking results.
Thank you kindly for such a clear, effective and informative tutorial on a topic that had bothered me to no end. You got yourself a new subscriber.

BLESSED THY BY THE ALL MIGHTY ALGORITHM
This is one of the best explanations I've seen on how to apply contrast paint on a space marine which is ironically one of the worst candidates for contrast if applied using traditional technique!
Thanks
This video literally changed my attitude towards contrast paints. Thank you so much Juan! Also you are hilarious
Thanks! I'm happy to help
Years after this has been posted, but watching and listening to you explain your method immediately showed me what I was doing wrong and why I was getting splotches. Prepping one now, excited to try it again!
Happy to help!
Juan, Thank you very much for all you do and have done. From when I first came across your bone coloured armour video I have been hooked to your videos ever since. You have given me the confidence to start using green stuff and sculpt to giving me the know how and enthusiasm to paint my armies to a great level. I hope you have a great new year and that 2022 brings you joy and positivite vibes. Thanks
You just made my day, thanks 😘
Ok, that intro was delightful.
The not starting with a dry brush is not a tip I’ve heard before, but it makes total sense once it’s explained.
The feathering demo was handy as well.
Glad I could help.
To me the not using a dry brush is just a basic, and as I said not only for contrast
I definitely don't flood it as much as you, makes sense why I would get streak lines. Thank you, my guru!
Happy to help 😘
Honestly thank you so much. Really dove into some "test models" recently and contrast paints for the first time, but I was DEFINITELY using the "wrong" method. Appreciate the slow, but funny and thorough, "show and tell" approach to the information. Big thumbs up and keep wigglin those brows!
Amazing, i painted one mini before watching this and another after watching this. the difference is insane! i was totally painting it the wrong way you showed lol. thanks so much!
Happy to help!
im just starting my painting jounrey about 5 months in have painted about a dozen orks and some chaos space marines. the orks i have been using slap chop and i kept getting that blotchy look im so excited to paint tonight and try this out i was using a smaller brush and trying to do it like you paint normally just without thinning. This is going to really up my ork game now the next step is just getting highlights down!
thank you very much, extremely useful. and I love your sense of humor. here's to a 2022 full of excellent content for you, happy new year!
Thanks! I really appreciate it, some people are just too boring it seems
I dont use contrast paints, but you've taught me so much about layering. I plan on experimenting with contrasts soon because of your videos. Thanks so much! I also love your sense of humor!
Thanks 😘
Happy New Year Juan.
The use of a larger brush for contrast paint was confounding at first but using a 2nd brush to absorb the excess pooling really made a difference to the finish. Thank you once again.
Great Tutorials. I love your sense of humour. Keep up the fight against Blue!
Thanks 😘
Happy I could help
Really appreciate the comment on weather and ambient humidity. Summer desert conditions with any roughness in the primer mean contrast paints for me dry almost before I can reload the brush.
Yeah, there's sadly nothing you can do about it
Dude, I've got to say that I've absolutely love your channel.
For a long time I've been looking for someone who would put that much effort into their work and at the same time explain everything step by step. I'm a huge fan of techniques you're using and thanks to your videos I'm slowly learning them myself. I've been following this channel for quite a while and I'm really happy to see that it's growing so fast. Keep up the good job man, you're truly amazing!
Thanks mate, I really appreciate it 😘
I bought my contrast paints a week ago and I was about to put them up for sale because I couldn't get them to work. This video, however, changed all that. Many thanks! Slathering it on and reupping frequently I think did the trick on top of a moist brush.
Happy to help!!!
Thank you for that awesome tutorial! I've tried Contrast paints a few times but messed it up every time - now I know it's because I'm using to small a brush and too little paint! Definately going to give my Contrasts another go :)
Happy to help 😘
this was the best demonstration of how to apply contrast paint effectively. Thanks so much for the video. the brush licking scenes always a plus! :D
Happy to help 😘
I started licking my brushes and immediately leveled up my painting.
Also, I like it. And they like it.
😂
I'm definitely guilty of using the wrong technique you demonstrated, I think this video will change how I apply contrast paint, thanks so much.
Happy to help
Great video thank you! Definitely guilty of not loading up my brush enough and using a too small brush too.
Happy to help 😘
This video is a long time coming! It’s stuff you can pick up from watching like most of your videos but it’s so helpful that it’s all in one place!
Happy you liked it, I will admit I had fun making these technique videos
Love your methods here and I’ve been using them on my minis here and there. Thanks for your work!
Great stuff! Always cool to see a vid showing an approach that I feel I was slowly gravitating too. You have to be brave with contrast, put it on thick people! Only way to make it smooth.
PREACH!
Great video. I have always had problem with uneven finish when slap chopping. Gonna try this now
Hope it helps!
Such a clear and concise video very well edited helpful and a bit of humor to boot, bravo Juan.
Thanks mate 😘
This is the fist painting video ever starting with my favorite song. 🙂 Great way to educate and add some fun.
Thanks 😘
I JUST was getting ready to paint Tree-Revenants using a way too small brush, before this video popped up. I think you just saved my paint job.
Happy to help, and enjoy painting your angry tree people
Great video. This technique is great for applying washes too.
Yes it is!
It's been over 10 years since I last painted a mini [Dark Angels for my son' friend] I now build and paint terrain but, watching three of your videos this evening I think, despite the aged eyesight, it's high time I got back to that part of the hobby. Juan,
I figured out why Deathguard mix wasn’t going on smoothly. I hadn’t watched this video first! :)
My next attempt wasn’t perfect, but much better. I realize this is a technique that requires practice just like edge lighting or glazing.
Thank you Contrast King!
Yeah, technique does matter, and applying contrast well is very different to normal acrylics
I have trouble with my Contrast and this is exactly what I needed. Cheers.

Watching your chanel got me to try larger brushes and I've never looked back 👍
Once you go black, you never go back!

That feathering is a good idea for weathering. Much appreciated!
Yes it is! I use it extensively in all my paintjobs
Thanks for a very comprehensive overview of using contrast paints. Have a great 2022!!

You truly are the master of constrast paints.
Thanks 😘
Came here for the brush wetting and you did not disappoint

I’ve been doing it completely wrong! This was super helpful. With a wet palette. Is it better to use distilled water for contrast paints? I think I’m going to get one after watching this.
Love your videos. And the red light in the back makes it very crispy.
Thanks! I'm glad you like it. The red compliments my sexiness
Gracias por todo Juan y feliz año, que todos tus proyectos se hagan realidad y nosotros los veamos…

Your gags make me die from laughing. Fantastic!! As always
Thanks
Unsure if you will see this as the video is a little older. I was shown this by a friend as i was struggling to get rid of that mottled effect on my space marines and honestly this has been really useful. I did have one question though which is do you use a dry palette or a wet palette for contrast? I am assuming dry but i haven't the experience to tell the difference
I put them on my wet palette but I never go back to a pool of paint after I'm done with a section or colour
So happy to see the new videos doing well. This knowledge is really fundamental and rarely shown in video. So great.
Keep on the clickbait coming and thanks you!
Thanks for watching 😘
Just want to take a moment to pay my respects to Bob's right shoulder pad. Graciously sacfrificed for us on the altar of teaching.

I really appreciate it, I work very hard to produce the best quality videos I can with my limited gear and when you do it all by yourself it can get very difficult sometimes.

Screw them podologists! Never let them silence you, Juan!
THEY WILL NEVER GET MY FEET ALIVE!!
Thanks so much! this should help me to improve my contrast use. Which techniques can we expect in upcoming videos? Are you planning to do a some videos with the army painter speed paint series as well?
Thanks!
What technique videos do YOU want to see? I'm open to suggestions.
As for AP, since they haven't sent me any paints to review, no I won't feature them but I was never going to use them in my regular videos anyway since not everyone can get hold of them (I'm the best example here, no shops sell AP in a 400 km radius from where I live)
Also they seem to be a 1:1 copy of the Contrast range anyway, so it would be extremely easy for anyone who wants to use them to adapt my videos to them
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Actually I don't really know what techniques there are. But I would be interested to see any other stuff you can show me on how to use contrast paints.
Thank you for the great videos! Do you have a link to the dropper bottles you like? Do you use a funnel to fill them?
Thanks, these are the ones I use
www.ibottles.co.uk/child-resistant-plastic-ldpe-dropper-bottle-stubby-tip.html
No funnel
Something to add - I made a great experience with Basilicanum Grey as base coat for resin and hard plastic miniatures.
Great techniques that I’ve never seen anywhere else
Thanks 😘
Yeah so I tried this, did everything you said, felt I was doing alright at it.. then it still looked like crap. So I'm guessing the secret sauce is years of experience and muscle memory. Every panel I did was a blotchy mess. I'm just leaning into it now. And also getting a damn airbrush.. which I'll also suck at.
I am a complete beginner and having been watching videos while waiting for my first minis to arrive. You make good points about the use of wet palette with contrast paints and was led to believe you cant by other videos. In this video you use a natural hair brush instead of a synthetic hair brush for applying the contrast. I thought that was supposed to destroy the brush, but as you showed, it won't ruin it? Can I also use the natural brush on washes and metallic paints? I ask because I am still starting out and would like to know if I can splurge buying a natural hair brush and use it for every paint job.
You can definitely use a natural hair brush for contrast. That's the only thing I use, just keep in mind the guidelines I give here and in my brush video.
Again, I only use natural hair brushes for everything. Metallic paints do wear them out quicker but I honestly don't care, a brush is a disposable item for me but it might be different for you.
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thanks so much! Subs and likes from me! More Xpress Color Videos please! 🥳
That feathering technique is really nice. Thanks!
That (and your sense of humor!) has gotten me to sub! :D Looking forward to future videos!

outstanding! thanks so much for sharing this.
Thank you for watching 😘
Very cool and concise video! I'm curious, could someone give some examples, on where they have used this contrast paint feathering? It gives a cool effect for sure , but as a pretty new painter i have a hard time visualizing where it would be use full
You can see a masterclass on feathering applied to a mini in my Cursed City - Vargskyr video.
Also other very good videos that include it are:
Eavy Contrast Marines - Death Guard
Eavy Contrast - Sylvaneth
There are a lot more, but those stand out to me right now.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Had a look at the Vargskyr video, exactly what i was looking for! Thank you for sharing. Really enjoyed the feathering effect on the ears and little mini-shoulder-wings.

OK I found a thing that works surprisingly well here! Idiot here decided to paint an Imperial Knight with contrast paints so there's some big panels. At first even following the guide I had massive issues with the paint pooling and soaking it up from the edges was OK but some paint just sat in blobs on top and trying to move it about caused streaking with a normal brush.
So I tried instead, applying the paint quickly as normal, spreading it to the corners and recesses as required, THEN using a makeup brush to stipple the area. This creates a kind of textured, dappled finish as opposed to a perfectly smooth one, but it looks cool anyway and most importantly is quite consistent across the whole panel. The only thing is it really only works well for your first colour base coat as it can get a little messy with such a large brush. This is fine though if like me you're painting over all the trim etc later anyway.
AMAZING TRICK!
I might have to try that, thanks
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Cool! Be interested to see what someone with better painting skills makes of it! One thing I did do though is applied a second coat of just stippling once the first one dried, with a small amount of contrast on the end of the brush. Seemed to even it out without losing the contrast effect.
Hola Juan, thanks for the video and all the inspiration, I wish you a very happy New Year and thanks for your great content, nice brush wetting technique 😀

Hi Juan, great video. I think I am of those people using the wrong technique, my bad. Gonna apply your suggestion at the next mini and see what it comes out.
I've got one question. Mind sharing where you got that useful dropper bottle ? Thank you so much
ibottles.co.uk
Great video. What dropper bottles do you use and how do you transfer to them? Keep up the awesome content!
These are the bottles
www.ibottles.co.uk/child-resistant-plastic-ldpe-dropper-bottle-stubby-tip.html
As for how I do it, I thin the paint with distilled water and just pour it by hand
Huge fan! Seriously learn so much from you and has shown in my minis! Thank you.
Simple technique question, I see you apply the base coats then into layering, is there any cons to base coating everything then into layering/highlights?
No, there isn't if you are tidy, I just prefer to do it step by step
Thank you! Some truly great tips here 🎉🎉
Thanks
Thanks and happy new year!
Happy New year to you as well 😘
Thank you so much for your video. I just couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong
Hope this helps you
Great job mate! Thank your for those tips. So at least you need a 2 or 3 size Bush? That's correct? And I suppose we don't use our best Bush for contrast paint. Right?
I use the same brushes for everything, and yes I recommend a 3 and 4 for application.
Also have in mind that brush sizes are not a standard, so those might be different for you brand.
Thanks! My contrast painting was never smooth enough before.
Happy to help 😘
Thank you for your videos, all are excellent videos. How do you transfer constrast paint to dropper bottle? I mean, what do you use to make it more fluid? Medium, water?. And how much per bottle? Thank you again!!
Nothing, I just pour it.
Ok. Thanks!!
Juan, what dropper bottles do you use? ¡Saludos y gran trabajo!

I like that feathering technique with contrast paints--I haven't tried that before! Thanks & Happy New Year Juan!😁❤️😘
Happy New Year
lots of question and comments :
1. that intro, lol
2. with the wet pallette, is the the sheet wet, does it need to be , does it change anything ? I am asking because I heard that water "separates" contrast paints (I guess it means it would separate pigments or whatever)
3. Is it a good idea to use cheap brushes with Contrast Paints (it's what I do at the moment) : the reason is that, I suck for not putting the ferrule in the paint (no, I don't put it in the bottle, I use pipettes) and I still managed to put paint in the ferrul EVERYTIME. So, instead of wasting an expensive brush, I take cheap wal-mart brushes (that works surprisingly well for the cheapness... 5 brushes for like 3 dollars). So, except the standard " you do you" answer, what's your take on that ?
4. for the powdery residue, I use steel ball, this is way cheaper than a vortex mixer.
5. 3: 42 : GOD DAMN, I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT !!
6. I don't really understand what the wrong technique is. Is that the brushe is too small and/or not loaded enough ?
7. thanks, man ! I was waiting for a video like that from you in a looong time!
2. No, the sheet is NEVER wet, you just place it over the wet sponge but the surface is not wet. You are just using it to hold the paint for a bit, you don't go and use that puddle for hours, so it makes no difference, it's just more convenient.
3. I don't use them, I see why people do but I don't. If you pre-load the brush with water as I say in the video it's going to be ok, what I do is once a brush looses it's perfect tip but is still a good usable brush (just not for ultra fine detail) I use that for contrast layers, and keep the super sharp ones for what they do best.
6. Yes, both.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thanks man, you are the best.
I mean, litterally, the best for both bein a freaking God at painting but also for the teaching.
Happy to help
Juan awesome video again. I’m enjoying contrast paint I started with a few and now own half of the line.
Now I feel that the question must have been asked and I’m sorry for having you repeat the answer. Where did you get those dropper bottles. I got Amazon special and they are horrible. Bottle is soft and the nozzle clog and I end up pulling the tip off to get at the paint. I do use flow improver to move the paint.
This are the droppers
www.ibottles.co.uk/child-resistant-plastic-ldpe-dropper-bottle-stubby-tip.html
Just want to point out that, THEY WILL clog, all droppers clog that's their main disadvantage. You have to take a needle or a piece of wire and unclog them from time to time.
And no, no additives whatsoever. For normal paints (no contrast or shades) I only use distilled water
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you
Great content and I am looking forward to applying this using the Deathwing Terminators recipe in your other video. A quick question - how do these principles work when using contrast paints on smaller areas on a model? For example, your use of Black Templar on the undersuit the DW Terminator.
It's basically the same but for smaller details you don't have to be as careful or load the brush as much
thank you!@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
Disturbing in parts - made my day!!😀
Happy to provide satisfaction 😘
Perfect video
No sorry
I've been having success using my air brush with the contrast paints. I turn my psi way down and get right up on the model. Gotta get alot of paint on so it can do its thing, but don't let it run.
Very interesting technique
but what’s the point of using contrast paints through an airbrush? at that point, doesn’t it make more sense to use a “normal” paint? thanks
Well not if you already have your infantry painted with contrast, then you want to match the results on them on your vehicles too.
Also contrast can do stuff that normal acrylics can't, same as inks really when applied with an airbrush.
Ah! Ding! 💡! I'm not recharging my brush often enough. Thank you!

Great Video, happy new year man! I hope more of these videos are coming ❤
If people like them and watch them, I will keep making them
Great video! Question, how come you paint over white instead of a slapchop drybrushed mini with already some shadow and lights?
Because I prefer it, but I've also done Slapchop too, in fact I'm painting an army like that
Useful skills, helpful techniques and a a fair amount of musical and erotic entertainment - this video has it all! ;-)
Thanks a lot and all the best for you, your loved ones and all the followers in the new year!

Thanks for that great video!
Do you think those xpress color paints can be mixed with 'normal' paints to enhance the highlights? What's your approach to highlight contrast/speed/xpress paints?
Yes they can, grab some off-whites of different flavours and use them like that.
I usually just find a colour that matches, but I'm good with colour
