Written and filmed on the road.
In December 2018, Zimbabwean artist Gemma Griffiths began a 500 day journey across Africa, to write her debut album.
Gemma and filmmaker Marc Neilson, drove over 24,000 km through 10 different countries, with a studio and all their instruments in a Landrover Defender. The trip spread over 18 months, where they lived in the vehicle, meeting musicians and connecting with them. This is where Gemma wrote and recorded her upcoming album.
From the impenetrable forest of Bwindi, Uganda, to the Tanzanian mountains, the Mozambican Archipelago islands, and the Namibian desert, this journey of two artists and a vision is nothing short of spectacular.
Now, on day 500 - is the release of the first track, entitled “Ndinewe”. Filmed in all 10 countries, Ndinewe is an introduction into the journey itself.

Hi Gemma, I'm a 7th Grade Science teacher in Massachusetts, still teaching 100% remotely due to coronavirus. I've been giving my students a tour of modern African music, one country each day. I play the music in the background for the first few minutes while they do an opening task to get them ready for the lesson. This song is my choice from Zimbabwe. It's such a beautiful song - big hooks, funky beat, subtle African guitar, multiple languages, and gorgeous scenery in the video. My students really liked it. Thanks so much for making it!

From a young age I would see the word Zimbabwe every day on the 'Welcome to Middlesbrough' sign and it always fascinated me. My hometown was twinned with Masvingo and I would always think, what is it like there? Who lives there? What are the people like?
