Ron Howard's delivery here is professorial. I'm already addicted to TCM but I just feel like I need to be auditing this class that Mr. Howard is teaching.
This video from Ron Howard exemplifies the beauty of TCM, movies, and Ron’s own vast knowledge of the industry. We need more videos from TCM like this, with Ron and other industry experts, to teach all of us the “why’s” behind film.
I went to see Lady sings the blues with my mother. I was 17 and we both loved Diana Ross. She was spectacular. All of the movies Ron mentioned are amazing. Thanks Ron for the masterclass.
A Face In The Crowd may be Elia Kazan's finest yet most underappeciated work. Andy Griffith's performance is a tour de force. Who better to highlight this film than Ron Howard? Fantastic pick. And The Maltese Falcon is a bona fide classic, if you want real Film Noir origins without a bunch of diluted, misquoted references, watch it. Humphrey Bogart's performance is just as riveting today as it was in 1941 too, as is the whole cast.
Hear, hear! ❤ Two absolute _classics._ Sam Spade & Lonesome Rhodes are two of the best characters to emerge out of old Hollywood... one stoic, one over-the-top. Griffith's laugh is incredible... _"HAH--HAAAAAAAAAAAA!"_ 😂 All the movies discussed are worthy of this irreplaceable channel.
I've always considered MALTESE as my favorite detective film and I've seen it - and still will - constantly. And it's not for Bogart's actions - it's everyone else's. Elisha's, Sidney's, Peters... but also Ward Bond and Barton MacLane. One of my favorite 'most overlooked' scenes is Bogart's fast-talking interview with the DA - "Am I going to fast for ya?" he says to the clerk-reporter. A pure and wonderful tip 'o the hat to the book, too. Elisha's finale where he breaks down after regaining conscienceness, "Five to one, they're selling you out, kid..." And his first encounter wtih Bogart in the Hotel, then being disarmed on the street with Bogart handing the guns to Sidney, "A blind newsy took 'em away from him..." The fact that this film either introduced or firmly cemented this supporting cast into Hollywood and film-lore makes this film beyond good or bad - it's too IMPORTANT.
@@Cbcw76 The American poster for Maltese Falcon stunk. I worked in a custom photo lab and worked a lot in Photoshop. I designed my own. Full size with all the National Screen Service details at the bottom. Even bought a replica falcon to photograph for it. It's up and framed.
I love Foul Play! My grandfather taped it from TV and I became a fan of the movie when I was in high school. My mom and I will sometimes quote it when we say, “well, now the shit has really hit the fan” 😂
Andy did such an excellent job with A Face in the Crowd. Excellent movie, and still wholly relevant today. It's also remarkable how much of a 180 Andy's character is in A Face, compared to his character in Mayberry RFD.
Face In The Crowd..just the way the characters are lit is powerful. If a film class only had this to study for all its qualities I'd take it. That first shot of Peter Lorre in Falcon just makes me smile, just as scenes from Touch Of Evil do. Sometimes the wrapping of a gift is as important as the gift. The crazy amount of work to pull off a great film is the wrapping. I save the wrapping..
Watching from the State of Rhode Island-we've all gotten to enjoy the contributions of your acting family for a long time-and it's been great-and always great to hear from you Ron-these picks are no different-and well noted-wishing you and yours great health and longevity-Peace! 😇
A Face in the Crowd was just on recently, think it was another pick. So glad to see it getting some love. It's such a prescient film. It's 20 years before Network, but perhaps even more powerful and long lasting. Yeah, the acting is a bit over the top, but Lonesome is supposed to be loathsome, and making it such a big performance that is necessary, just as Walter Matthau has to be so subdued. Great film.
I completely understand why Andy didn't want to play a villain again, esp. one as vile as this guy, but, damn, if it isn't his greatest acting work. He's superb. Great american film. Relevant, to say the least.
FYI: The correct pronunciation of "Maltese Falcon"-so spoken in the movie itself in fidelity to the euphony that Dashiell Hammett clearly had in mind-is "mawl-tease fawl-kun." The "mawl"/"fawl" echo was quite deliberate.
It is a common American mistake now that in English a single L is pronounce as a double L but they say it as written, like albeit, Albany, almanac said as if there is LL.
A FACE IN THE CROWD. I'm not surprised Ron chose to speak about this first, but the truth is that Andy reveals that he is a strong actor--he can stand up to anything that Marlon Brando can do. I dare say Andy Griffith as every bit as good as Brando.
The late Eileen Brennan deserves special mention. To my knowledge she is the only person to win an Oscar and an Emmy for the same role, as the drill instructor in Private Benjamin.
I love this feature where someone gives you their recommendations even though they obviously are selling whatever is on for the month. Interesting to hear what they think about it. I'm not interested in seeing any of these and some.I have seen in some I haven't. But I love listening to him talk about But I love listening to him, talk about Them.
I'm dismayed how Tim Robbins's brilliant political parody "Bob Roberts" has been forgotten. It's biting, sharp, funny, and infuriating. It deserves to come back!
I liked tim Robbins in that Movie about Hollywodd whose name I forget. I also liked him in that "Conpspiracy" Movie who name I alos forget with Jeff Bridges I also thought was a great Movie as well. the later reminded me a lof of Warren Beatty;s Parrallex View. Interesting, they don't show either of those 2 Movie much or at all on Cable.
Let's see....an actor who really wants to move into Directing, who finally gets his chance and scores the first time out of the box! Sure, that's John Huston, but Ron Howard scored with his third movie, SPLASH. And he never looked back. Kindred souls.
Ron Howard was going to Pixar Animation Studio, Ron Howard wants to perform Fantastic Beasts, Ron Howard is going to be in James Bond 007, Ron Howard is gonna be in PAW Patrol: The Third Movie and Ron Howard is going to appeared on 28 Years Later (2025)
Griffith in A Face in the Crowd is astonishing. I mean you can't take your eyes off him. If I wanted to defeat Donald Trump I would pay to run this movie in prime time on all three old school networks with some of his political ads and greatest speaking hits worked in between.
Great seeing Ron as always ( a great director himself), and Andy's film that he mentions is wonderful, but let's not forget another Andy ace that was served: I'd tell you more about it, but I have No Time For Sergeants.
Many, Mr. Howard included may disagree with me but I always felt the season 2 episode of HAPPY DAYS called Richie's Flip Side was a light-hearted version of A FACE IN THE CROWD without the politics as Richie was a Wolfman Jack styled DJ who got a bit too big for his friends. I felt some FACE IN THE CROWD tendencies in the episode, again just my take.
A Face in the Crowd---This film is prescient and it foreshadows the entire MAGA cult of personality. Griffith's performance is amazing. Trump and The Apprentice scenario for sure.
Very much so. Prior to Trump getting involved in politics, Lonesome Rhodes reminded me a great deal of how Rush Limbaugh used his radio show to bamboozle certain people into believing almost anything you tell them.
Pigeonholing 'A Face in the Crowd' to Trump is an incredibly simple application of it's chief character and broader themes. This film was relevant long before Trump and MAGA.
Letting ANYONE sing for Billie Holiday was a huge mistake. NO ONE could re-create Billie Holidays musical interpretations, NO ONE. "Lady Sings The Blues" could have been a great movie with any actress if they had dubbed in Billie Holiday's recordings. A HUGE MISTAKE. Only a politician wouldn't mention this.
TCM, or some revival theater that shows double bills, should screen "A Face In the Crowd" with its inadvertent predecessor "Meet John Doe." They're the same story (from the same studio): a woman, fearing for her job, finds a man to play a fictitious character she creates and turns him into a media sensation. Presumably Frank Capra intended "John Doe" to be a salute to the Great Common Man, but only succeeds in showing the public as fickle, disloyal, judgmental, all too easily led by appearances, and ready to turn on you at a moment's notice. Budd Schulberg's more honest "Face In the Crowd" makes his John Doe (called Lonesome Rhodes) a monster, but portrays the public as just as gullible.
Whenever I mention A Face In The Crowd to someone, I get a blank stare because many haven’t even heard of it. Not only is it an amazing film, Griffith’s performance is one of the best in film history. And yes, parts of it are very MAGA-esque, though I can see where Griffith’s character became essentially a cult leader. On the other hand, I’ll still NEVER understand how a disgusting human being like Donald Trump could even gain ONE follower, let alone millions. But the film foreshadowed the social and political ugliness and vanity of the sociopath in the orange clown suit.

I’m so glad Griffith got the lead role in “A Face in the Crowd”. He was perfect! 👍
I agree 100%! I never cared for old what's his name from on the waterfront. I'm awfully glad Andy got that part!
