I love the multiple overlays…3 guitars plus percussion! It’s delightful like ear candy. I recall playing Dave Brubek’s “Take 5”(for fun bc it wasn’t part of my classical repertoire) on the piano then recording the sax part (& vice versa) to create that depth. Plus that song requires both piano & sax to even recognize it. I love all layering. I wasn’t even aware of it until I realized that every voice heard in an Afroman song is actually his own. I assumed there were other members. Eventually I realized how similar the voices were & probably wondered if he was playing with his biological brothers. That’s when it finally occurred to me that he’s the only person there, like some eureka moment. The other 4 characters sing, harmonize & add conversation which paints the mental image of a 5 man band. He even titled his other 4 voices that all chime in “The Quarter Piece Quartet”. Realizing that he’s crafting layers upon layers & also creating a storyline, I’ve realized it’s a really cool integral part of his “craft”. I didn’t notice at first bc it was in the style of War’s “Why Can’t We Be Friends” with ppl talking, laughing, cutting up & each verse was sang by a different band member. Afroman created the same effect but he was the only artist. When an artist mixes their own voice even if only to harmonize, it’s divine. Now that I easily recognize the technique, it made the discovery of Dan Reeder really special. He uses many recordings of his voice to harmonize. With his sound I never thought there were other members as it’s easy to hear that he’s harmonizing with himself. I imagine that others may never notice when only one person plays every part bc i was oblivious for most of my life. To see you playing all parts at the end is great. It makes me wonder if it’s something you really enjoy or if it’s borne from simple necessity. Had you not shown how the sound was being created, I’d have assumed you were playing along with a prerecorded instrumental of the song. Glimpsing behind the curtain to observe how you created multidimensional sound is really cool. Respect. It’s reminiscent of seeing a Shakey Graves acoustic performance. When you realize that he’s responsible for every sound - like he’s playing a foot pedal suitcase bass drum while simultaneously playing guitar really well & either singing or playing the harmonica - it’s astounding to witness. Had I never seen him play, I’d have assumed that he has a band that creates the music.
