A fortunate series of events earlier in the day left New York in control of their destiny. Win and they get the sixth and final wild card spot. Granted, Esiason's performance went into a terrible nosedive in the second half of the year, but the Jets had seemingly lost hope in Nagle, who would not return to the team in 1994. I believe the concern of the Jets and their fans going into Houston was to get to the playoffs. That alone might of saved Coslet's job (that and being open to hiring an offensive coordinator). But it's always great hearing about something overlooked and forgotten.
Boomer was on a hall of fame trajectory for his first 6-7 years in Cincinnati, before he started his early decline. Was very similar to Dante Culpepper, both in size and career trajectory.

I was an Oilers fan at the time (moreso to copy my aunt, who was also an Oilers fan). That game is most notable for both coordinators on the Oilers sideline getting into a fist fight during the game on national television.
But if the Jets won that game in Houston they were going to the playoffs, as a kid at that time I wasn't even aware of this situation and all my family were around the TV that night rooting for the Jets to win. The other astounding thing about that game was Houston had nothing to play for having their playoff spot locked up and the game was essentially meaningless for them yet they won in a rout

The Patriots upset the Dolphins in overtime earlier in the day, setting the table for the Jets to just win to get in. It's ridiculous to assume that that some Jets fans would have been rooting for Esiason to fail because of an obscure clause that none of them were aware of. Jets fans are a strange breed, but they want their team in the playoffs like anyone else.

I've said this already, but Boomer Esiason was fantastic whenever Bruce Coslet was involved with the offense Esiason was QBing, but the seasons without Coslet things were more dodgy. I think Boomer was good, and if those mid/late 1980s Bengals played defense once in awhile (only in 1988 did the Boomer-led Bengals play respectable D, and look! Super Bowl 23, & the Bengals; I feel they were 1988's best team as well, even if they came up short in the end). The 1993 Jets blew a playoff spot by losing early games they could've won (versus Eagles & Raiders), a dumb loss to the Colts later, a difficult final 3 games (Cowboys, Bills, Oilers), and the fact that they only scored 36 points over their final 6 games. I think it was a pretty weird Jets season and overall team (2-1 start, 3-game losing streak, 6-1 run, then 3-game losing streak).

One of the best NFL season finale weeks in history both for scenarios, matchups, and games. Long/short as far as the Jets were concerned was they needed a Miami or Pittsburgh loss to have a chance. Miami loses to New England (in a crazy back and forth game in OT). Pittsburgh's win over Cleveland means the Jets can only win and get in.

The first was great Wesley Walker, but then Ralph Clayton U of Michigan in 1980 (an amazingly poor draft by the Jets that somehow was able to recover to make the playoffs 4 of the next 6 seasons) Stephen Hill 2012 and Devin Smith who sadly had more surgeries than td’s as a Jet

The trade itself wasn't "bizarre"; the conditions were a little odd, but a coach trading for a veteran QB he knows in hopes of saving his job makes a lot of sense. He's succeeded in that role as well as the traditional starter role ever since.
Through the first 10 games, the Bengals averaged 23.4 points a game. Their points scored in the last 6 games: 6, 6, 3, 7, 14, 0. Yeah. And I thought throughout this video that maybe Boomer's start and dropoff were a strength-of-schedule illusion, but I don't think so. The only bad teams they played in the first 10 weeks were Indy and Cincinnati. Three of those low-scoring point totals in the last 6 weeks came against 4-12 Indianapolis, 4-12 Washington, and 5-11 New England. The other three against 3 of the best teams in the league (Buffalo, Dallas, Houston). Just to put icing on the cake, they actually won 2 of the games where they scored in single digits. They beat the Colts 6-0 and rather infamously beat Washington 3-0 in a nationally televised Saturday afternoon game, a game that very much summed up how 1993 NFL had devolved into a field-goal-kicking contest. No matter how much people want to romanticize it now, the early '90s NFL was *not* a good on-field product. 1993 in particular was a low point that led to the introduction of the 2-point conversion and the moving back of missed FGs to the spot of the kick in '94, in an effort to encourage more teams to play for TDs.

It's funny because of the last game of the season, Boomer's rating fell below Bubby Brister's career season in Philly. Many people still think Vinny Testerverde (Cle) was more deserving than Boomer for that season's AFC QB slot. It's funny that Jim Kelly got snubbed as a mention for a pro bowl as well. With a couple of more seasons, Vinny found his way to NYJ.
Coslet made the right call by playing Esiason. You always play to win. There was no guarantee he would finish with an 89 rating. If the 2nd round pick was that important Jets ownership could have overruled Coslet.
You mentioned WR Yarborough at the end.... this guy was supposed to be the next Jerry Rice. Unfortunately, he didn't get enough playing time to prove it at all. Totally busted out..but I point the finger at the coaches more (kinda like the Nagle situation). There should be a list of players who really really had some strong potential but ended up with the dumbest coaches ever. People blast Coslet (and yes, he was pretty bad with the Jets with his choices).. but don't forget Rich Kotite. Boomer esiason really went don hill fast when playing football in new York. His passing skills were way off. His offensive line wasn’t good, so that explains some of it. I’ve heard him on the radio blasting his coach rich kotite as the worst coach ever. So maybe the coaching was also bad. But the one thing I noticed about his throwing, was that he was often over throwing his receivers as if just getting rid of the ball.

The 1993 New York Jets last 3 losses of the season were against three of the top teams Bills, Cowboys and Oilers.

it's been 25 years and i could be totally wrong, but i don't think any Jets fan wanted to lose that game. i'm pretty sure if we won, got to 9-7, we would have been the last playoff team in. i don't remember all the specifics but i'm almost sure that game cost us the playoffs.

Long/short as far as the Jets were concerned was they needed a Miami or Pittsburgh loss to have a chance. Miami loses to New England (in a crazy back and forth game in OT). Pittsburgh's win over Cleveland means the Jets can only win and get in.

Yes, I do remember RY, but poor 2nd round WR picks is the feature not a bug. The first was great Wesley Walker, but then Ralph Clayton U of Michigan in 1980 (an amazingly poor draft by the Jets that somehow was able to recover to make the playoffs 4 of the next 6 seasons)

Also, take a look at he Jets in the second round overall. The last pro bowl player drafted in the second round was Mark Gastineau drafted in ‘79. I don’t count Justin Miller since he was drafted as a CB but made it as a KOR.

This reminds me of a weird more recent scenario with the Bills playing the jets (coincidentally) last game of the '16 season were the Bills had Tyrod Taylor benched the last game because of a strange clause in his contract which if he got injured the bills would owe him more money. They said afterwards that they wanted to evaluate other players but all the other starters were playing and they started EJ manuel instead of our rookie Cardale Jones....

The trade itself wasn't "bizarre"; the conditions were a little odd, but a coach trading for a veteran QB he knows in hopes of saving his job makes a lot of sense. It would have been weird for the fans to root against Boomer if the Jets had been playing for a possible playoff spot, but per the video they weren't, making it a meaningless game. Also, in the '94 draft the Cowboys picked Larry Allen five picks after Yarburough, so it wasn't like that 2nd rounder wasn't valuable; the Jets just picked poorly www.drafthistory.com/index.php/years/1994 .
The Jets actually were in with a win, but they were facing an Oilers team on a 10-game win streak and with Buddy Ryan's defense. Even with the Oilers starting Cody Carlson at QB I recall them being heavily favored.

He's actually a decent player with a career 3.97 ERA as of May 17 2021, which is 5% better than average after adjusting for park factors. Yeah. And I thought throughout this video that maybe Boomer's start and dropoff were a strength-of-schedule illusion, but I don't think so. The only bad teams they played in the first 10 weeks were Indy and Cincinnati. Three of those low-scoring point totals in the last 6 weeks came against 4-12 Indianapolis, 4-12 Washington, and 5-11 New England. The other three against 3 of the best teams in the league (Buffalo, Dallas, Houston).
Just to put icing on the cake, they actually won 2 of the games where they scored in single digits. They beat the Colts 6-0 and rather infamously beat Washington 3-0 in a nationally televised Saturday afternoon game, a game that very much summed up how 1993 NFL had devolved into a field-goal-kicking contest. No matter how much people want to romanticize it now, the early '90s NFL was *not* a good on-field product. 1993 in particular was a low point that led to the introduction of the 2-point conversion and the moving back of missed FGs to the spot of the kick in '94, in an effort to encourage more teams to play for TDs.

It's funny because of the last game of the season, Boomer's rating fell below Bubby Brister's career season in Philly. Many people still think Vinny Testerverde (Cle) was more deserving than Boomer for that season's AFC QB slot. It's funny that Jim Kelly got snubbed as a mention for a pro bowl as well. With a couple of more seasons, Vinny found his way to NYJ.

Coslet made the right call by playing Esiason. You always play to win. There was no guarantee he would finish with an 89 rating. If the 2nd round pick was that important Jets ownership could have overruled Coslet.

Boomer was a highly streaky quarterback. Several times in his career he had games where he was unstoppable. After he left the Jets, he played for the Cardinals had had greatest month in NFL history. After that he came back to the Bengals and had a monthly terror with them, taking Jeff Blake’s job, I believe. Even so, it never translated well when it counted, like SuperBowl 23. Or when they needed that win to get in the playoffs.

Boomer esiason really went don hill fast when playing football in new York. His passing skills were way off. His offensive line wasn’t good, so that explains some of it. I’ve heard him on the radio blasting his coach rich kotite as the worst coach ever. So maybe the coaching was also bad. But the one thing I noticed about his throwing, was that he was often over throwing his receivers as if just getting rid of the ball.
People gave him grief for using the nickname 'Boomer', but his real name was HitlerStalinMaoPolPot. So, you'd go by Boomer too...lol
