I find it very interesting how mr. Žižek has a vocabulary twice the size of most native english speakers, but still has an accent like he had first heard the language yesterday. =)
Very late comment. As a "neighbor" of Zizek, I can see a similar pattern in several Mediterranean & Southern European countries. Especially among those that study humanities and social sciences.
Also keep in mind that all of us that do not have English as a mother tongue aren't really speaking 'English'. I mean even if English is your mother tongue there are many variants (British, American, Australian etc.). You can think of Žižek as talking a kind of Slovenian-English just like Indians really talk Indian-English.
I live in a third world country and even books aren't so accessible to buy if you don't have a good enough income. So, during the pandemic, I wanted to read one of his books. Normally I go to libraries for all of my reading, but because of lockdown I couldn't. I emailed zizek, told him the story and asked if he could send me his book. The dude did it! Seriously, he attached the same manuscript he had sent the publisher. It even had typos and everything.
That's one hell of a gift! Even just the email would have been remarkable, but there you have the original manuscript!? Not that you should do it (as it was a gift), but you could probably sell that and purchase new editions of all of Zizek's books.
@@ianian4162 i mean... selling an Zizek's original manuscript wouldn't suit the character of someone who actually asked and received some from the man himself, would it?
This is precisely why I think we need a return to discreet and individualised principles. It might be utopian to think that everyone can come up with their own moral ideals, but if you don't know your parameters what are you aiming at?
@Jay James Right, but no ideology killed anyone, do you know who keeps killing people? Other people. And let us not forget that whilst "communism" quickly disposed of 100 million people, "capitalism" is slowly killing at least 2 billion atm and who knows how many it already killed, but as we already established ideologies don't kill people, people kill people, but this sort of an argument would remove that elitist moral high-ground you tried to make, both capitalism and communism suck ass, synthesis is the answer.
@Tiago Lima Wow what is this attitude mate? It's not his native language why do you expect him to be perfect? I think it says more about how he embraces his native accent or dialect and doesn't come up with fake accent for English. Lastly, you really don't know how language works do you?
@Tiago Lima dude has a speech impediment and many tics. Also, "pseudo-philosopher," seriously? Since you disagree with him, he must be fake? Yikes, you're simplistic.
Hes goofy. You will soon see. Hes also athiest if i remember correctly which is pretty closed minded. He seems agitated, impatient, and rough around the edges so to speak. Its like 1 part truth/value and 3 parts nonsense.
On the one hand, it would be great if it was something we’d already solved. On the other, it’s safe to say that Žižek was absolutely spot on about universal healthcare being an issue which both touches left wing principles and which is achievable. Much of Bernie’s success in campaigning on the issue is basically predicted by Žižek here.
Even though I feel like I wouldn’t agree with this mans view of the world. I think his opinion is highly valuable. We need more voices like his because maybe then a conversation towards solutions can occur
Absolutely. I'm a staunch lover of capitalism and free markets but I'd love to see bright new ideas brought up instead of old, useless ones. If there's a better system out there then show it to me! Or help me build it. Either way I'm prepared to change if we find a better way to do things. Be friendly and courteous to all those arguing against you so long as you make sure there is benevolence on both sides.
@@bratwurstkinsman6740 I've got a question for you but please forgive me for making an assumption while I ask. I'm going to assume here that you are a fan of democracy (if you aren't my question is useless so feel free to ignore it). Why do you think that it makes more sense for businesses to be run as oligarchies as opposed to democracies? Shareholders in a business have one interest -- profit. But if the workers were to run the business, they would not only be interested in profit (because obviously they would want to continue working) but ALSO care about workplace conditions. Imo, this gives the best possible outcome. This is fundamentally why I'm a leftist and I've yet to hear a great argument for why that's a bad thing.
If there's something i absolutely love about Zizek is that whatever he says always comes from an unpredictable perspective on humanity, even if what he says makes perfectly sense he always manages to catch you off guard.
It's not so Eastern-European. He has a typical Southern Slavic accent, actually a hard Polish accent in English would be quite similar to his accent out of the Central European nations. Eastern Slavic accents (e.g. Russian, Ukrainian, Belarussian) are way different, especially the "l" consonant and the vowels.
@sbcontt YT Also, in any social setting where there is a leadership competition, the quick and careless thinkers tend to be successful and have their poor thoughts enacted.
Probably because it's extremely difficult listinening to someone constantly snorting and slobbering. Yeah, it's a speech impediment, but it's a really disgusting one to try and listen to.
if you can't follow his thoughttrain you should probably change the topic you listen to instead of making fun of people. Also for a philosopher he doesn't even talk that complicated.
Thinking is alot harder than doing. That's why most people just stop doing it, sign up for a team and spout bullshit. The phrase "Just thinking isn't going to get you anywhere. Stop thinking and start acting on it or nothing will ever change!" stems from exactly those people. The people who gave up on thinking. It's not a virtue, it's surrender.
I don't agree. The idea of " stop thinking and start acting " is a response to procrastination and overthinking situations. It's not against calculating actions and procedure, it's against inaction!
Ricardo Marques Inaction is completely legitimate, unless taking action is necessary. This is not the case in many complex political matters. You shouldn't take action against anything unless you have a really good reason to. And those reasons are much more often than not related to signing up to and cheering for a team (political group/label/identity). What I'm talking about primarily are the vast majority of people who think that identity politics are a legitimate reason to act on anything. They're not. Feelings are not. Evidence is. Your identity doesn't matter at all when you talk about certain issues. It's irrelevant.
As human being we need to think before we act. That's why so many people die everyday! Because of under calculating one crucial information that takes slow thinking. Stereotypical thinking is fast and quick. Which is autopilot and stupid.
I don’t entirely agree with his beliefs, but it be foolish to say that this man is not wise. He sees the good in a capitalist methods and at least the good intentions of the capitalist model. However he is very critical of it, and promotes a new and highly controversial system, without demonizing those who unsurprisingly disagree with him. He is one of a few real philosophers left, who does not shield behind tribalistic power and puts himself out there. He has my respect.
@RED PILL PORTAL Where did you even get 100 million? I feel like you people just count every death(whether it's natural or just a random crime...just like in capitalist countries) in every socialist countries and blame it on communism just to get your numbers high enough for the propaganda lmao
MutterSchwein You are right that 100 million is an inaccurate number, but I think you missed the point. It was about 45 million that died during the Chinese cultural revolution. “Natural causes” during that time frame would account for like one percent of that, if even that much. It’s not propaganda, it’s reality, regardless of the exaggeration that was made. And, for crying out loud, if your defense of a position is “45 million died, not 100 million” then you need to rethink your support of that position
@@jaylambert2838 Sorry, I just don't believe western pseudo-intellectuals who think they know everything about communism just because they heard Jordan Peterson talked about it once in a podcast and how "evil" it is supposedly. It's missing political theories of how to get the policies passed to a great enough extent as to constitute a paradigm shift, but maybe that's not such a bad thing
I love you slavoj One of the thing great thinker does is that they drive you subconciously into rethinking of your personal life as an example of what the grand issue is about... Nd some how your own struggle with your personal conflict with job or family is tightly related and part of a greater universal prospective
I think if people have difficulty understanding someone it's the fault of the person making the statement. Stating things in the simplest terms is always best. E=MC2 is complex but put into simple terms. I'm sure the equation filled entire chalkboards before being reduced to it's famous form.
I think what Zizek poses here is not the invincibility of capitalism but the limitations of language to stop bodies, which are as he says naturally religious. Language cannot critique capitalism as long as capitalism is constantly superimposed or coincided with the human drive to gather resources. That's why it is a religion - because religion is based on categories of behavior which humans when pointed in their directions cannot avoid, as if obsessed. Typically, in religion, it is to fear death and ask for an afterlife. With capitalism's religion, the unavoidable biological obsession is "how could I stop gathering resources for myself?" You cannot. The answer to why this question arises is technology and overpopulation. Therefore, there is only one possible answer to creating a religion of not gathering resources obsessively: renewable energy and renewable materials. There is likely no other answer. I don't think ideology is a great word, because it almost depicts human drives as if they are ideas we accidentally discussed and convinced ourselves of. It's as if there is a mind/body divide, and ideology is in the mind - but it isn't. Ants have no brains but will gather resources endlessly - they just lack the technologies to destroy the world as we have done.
U know sometimes I think the great philosophers were only those from the past, but it just takes more researching to find great philosophers of our time.
this is a fundamental psychoanalytic rule of thumb: "don't just do something, sit there!" ... all dynamically trained therapists are steeped in it. Which then also reflects on the research wing of psychology that is so focused on a behavioral paradigm. Freedom is not in action, it's in the capacity to "think one's own thoughts," per Wilfred Bion. Deep thought is more than ideational. It's also emotional and attempts to recognize emotional truth, which undergirds much of what SZ is trying to say.
I WANT MOAR FROM ZIZEK! He's so interesting to hear, every video I've seen of him seems to be so short and captivating that it's like eating only one peanut. And we know you can't eat only one peanut.
Victor Hugo said, 'Nothing is more powerful than idea whose time has come'. We are now in a situation where the time has come but the idea is missing, I think.
That must only be due to how the bourgeois propaganda mills make even less sense than the reactionary, revisionist tripe spouted by this stooge of Anglo-American imperialism.
Very comforting to hear a pro-communism person admit that past attempts, like the Soviet Union, were utter failures. I’m all for exploring alternatives to capitalism but he’s so right: we can’t just take it away without a well thought out replacement. Another great point: Don’t let these ‘activists’ pressure you to act before you think hard on what you are promoting. Don’t feel guilty for not being sure of what to support and promote. We should still do our research and continue learning as much as we can. Don’t rush things because that’ll honestly just make it a slower process to a better world.
finally someone who wants to go and goes through thought to the core of things as I have always tended to do/wanted to do but felt almost wrong for doing as the large majority of people around me simply don't. they don't think or if they do they don't dare to/even notice they could or should go to a deeper core of things through deeper questioning.
People prefer to talk like they know what they're talking about, than doubt anything they think. That's why we end up with a lot of stupid people who are too stubborn
Maybe cause he's a philosopher? I don't know much about him but I think that philosophers shouldn't be proud and stubborn and defend one point of view only without questioning it, if we do that, we're not philosophers, we are just thinkers. Of course we can have preferences but we can't deal on absolutes, we have to be impartial mostly, and with that comes the ability to go further when thinking, to find out some truth that maybe contradicts us and our preferences, but now we know more. That can lead to the idea of thinking and never reaching a conclusion, because you always realize that you can go further. But I think it's better to think a little more and then act than to think little and act.
@@wjdavis9921 Okay, but you realize that the people who call themselves socialists (solely because that term was used as an attack on left wingers for DECADES) are actually advocating for extremely moderate reforms to Capitalism correct? And that the longer Capitalism is left to fall apart, the more and more people will either crave or believe that the entire system must be destroyed? And you see, this is where the stupidity of the right comes in: you can't just tell people not to be angry and expect them to stop being angry. The world is a terribly flawed place and to every attempt at fixing it, there are people who cling to old ideologies, to old religious worship of tradition and fear of change, but the very nature of humanity means there will always be a deep desire for both the benefits of Capitalism and Communism, so to anyone who feels that one is perfect and should be allowed to exist without the other, it will never even almost work, because someone will topple it. I just discovered this man. I believe he is the greatest living communist. It's like reading Bernstein again after the complete failure of his contemporary rivals.
+Johann Popper LOL he is not a communist, he is a post modernist trot. He wants to make an Americanised form of communism which a capitalised form of communism. I think you will not be able to feel the bad effects of his ideology by living in first world countries but we in the third world were badly effected by him. And now our intellectuals are getting out of this stupid dilemma of post modernist pseudo communist nonsense. Slavoj zizek is a person who says that the first wave of communism is utter failure. I know it had it's problems but they were far less problematic than the liberal capitalistic ones. But he is a guy who says that even liberal capitalism is far better than 20th century communism. Please don't try to take it personally but I think this nothing but a post modernist trot I even sometimes believe that he is making and writing such unnecessarily complicated works just to get academic awards or just to keep people away and engaged in thinking while doing nothing for the world.
+Johann Popper I think we should stop watching his video because the reason why most of the people came to this link is that they are hoping to get some advice from "almighty ZIZEK" and solve some worldly problems. If not then why should we even go against capitalism, just watch porn, jerk off, let the world get destroyed and the poor people get destroyed. What is the fucking point of watching this video and waste our time if we know most of our actions of going against capitalism always creates disastrous effects.
Ajmaeen Mahtab You are right. Merely watching this video in the hope this man might say something politically -- that is, externally -- enlightening is worthless and a waste. But doing everything as if God is trying to enlighten us can change the internal, not merely the external, and the more people who improve internally, the more we will see external manifestations of progress. God alone revolutionizes mankind, not Zizek or any other dependent mortal. Ultimately, all we can do alone is destroy. Because we're not suffering from worldly problems. We're suffering from spiritual imperfection. Pointlessly trying to change the universe to suit a broken spirit is perversity.
Well he’s a rich man so I doubt he lacks cleanliness, admit it you’re scared to come back at him with a well constructed argument because you know he’d destroy you in a debate, in turn you resort to silly personal insults that you have absolutely no evidence of being true.
@@c.darwin9259 I think you are missing the comedy on the comment, which actually Zizek loves, the same darkish comedy he has used to break political correctness and make friends.

Were my father a little bit like you, Dr. Žižek, I - and my brother - would have lived totally different lives and surely for the better. I absolutely praise you, Dr. Žižek, your thoughts and the good faith of sharing them.
Zizek needs to meet a brilliant philosopher from Spain called Antonio Escohotado, they would learn a lot from each other... They are both so conscious and wise. Like to let them know!
He's absolutely right about being anti capitalist. If we're going to call ourselves this we have got to begin thinking seriously of new market structures.
very smart and I advocate this thinking, even before I saw this video, start thinking what can be changed and suggest, positive improvements to the current systems that we have instead of asking to abolish the whole system, where I came from in Syria, I always advocated gov, progress and change, but never I advocated complete abolishment of the system even if it has evil traits, why? because I knew very well what will come next, complete chaos and regression of a even older and more vicious state that you don't want to go to, all in all thinking about our realities and even questioning them is a smart human mind exercise that we have to do often.
I agree with his second piece of advice, "take small steps like universal health care" to challenge capitalism. His first point, though, is just a direct contradiction to Marx's famous quote.
It's not like they are in charge of biggest power apparatus in the world. They think more than ever, but they dumb themselves down to appeal to people. Trump is example of taking this to extreme.
I’m from the Netherlands and I think we have the least bad of all systems. The basis is free market, restrained by social democratic and individual freedom (a welfare state that cares for the individuals that “lose” in the free market competition), but we only have as much leftists moralism as the people can handle. Currently, the people are fed up because of the pandemic, inflation and immigration and there is a lot of right wing populism, but the idea is that by giving them power, we show they cannot offer a valid alternative. This “mild opposition from the masses” and the corresponding “mild civil unrest” to whatever political system becomes popular has kept our government close to the middle for centuries. We are very critical of our leaders. Not as critical as the Germans, who are so critical of everything that they don’t have a nice and relaxed life anymore, but we are definitely not satisfied easily. Now, I’m a member of the Green Left party and I’m also very critical, and I see a big threat in the right wing populists, but as long as they are not violent, it’s not a huge threat and we can wait for the wind to blow in the other direction.
If you abolish capitalism, without abolishing hierarchy, you bring about the conditions which lead to the return of capitalism. Then when capitalism returns, it just overwrites it's own hierarchy on the previous hierarchy.
***** This is true. This is also why I disagree with people on the left attacking individual people and organisations and blaming them for our issues. If we remove them from power, the hierarchy and therefore the potential for authority still exists. If you oust a Neo liberal government like the Tories in the UK and replace them with a socialist democratic one, the power structures remain and the opportunity for exploitation and tyranny still exits.
***** The federal scientists and professionals union had their budget cut multiple times. What they teach you in middle-school becomes irrelevant in the light of the facts. Aboriginals are decreasing in population due to conforming to Canada's public institutions that invites most members of society. It's more or less the natural inclination of people that are aboriginals to pursue opportunities that the government offers. This "cultural funding" can be used elsewhere, especially when our priorities should be set elsewhere. I mean it's Canada, known for its multicultural stew. I really don't think that there's a need to take a priority in promoting culture.....of course unless the rate of immigrants from China, mainly from the mainland, overwhelms the diversity portfolio.
This is very eye opening speech by Zizek, I wonder if he took partly from the stoic school by not acting? I guess if I am right, its pure zizek and its somewhat changing the paradigm
His body can't even handle his reasoning: runny nose, itchiness, loose clothes. "Dear brain, please STAHP." Never stop, Zizek. Your ideas add to the Common-Wealth of Consciousnesses.
You need balance and coordination between the two. You can't only think and live in your mind, and you can't just act impulsively, but I have to say the moment I stopped thinking that much and instead started doing things my life took a huge turn for the better.
He is talking to a generation of future phylosophers, sociologist, psychologist, artist and scientist who are involved with human expression, behaviour and understanding society. He is not making a TED talk on how to improve your life. In that context, what he is saying is that activisim is still a form of action that was born within the bounders of capitalism. It doesn't exacticly solve the problem, it just stands on paying atention to it so the system can fix itself by producing a market on it. Example, vegan activism was transformed into a market of "planbased" products. So, this way people get to have the "I am changing the world" experience without ever really challenging a real political dominance or adressing sirious political issues with answers. In this scenario, call to actions are not even political tools, but mearly products to be sold to the highest bidder. So his advice is forget the "call to action", think if the action will have a real impact to what ever cause you want to adress. Don't get cought on the idea that "there is no time" so we should just act. Because to him there is no stopping colapse, there is only thinking what to do next, how to adress a world where capitalist tools are not enough. And there you will have a leftist movement that can really challenge capitalism.
I consider myself a classical liberal. A capitalist, that said. However, I have tremendous respect for the things Zizek says. Even though I don't agree with many, he brings up some very interesting points.
People are heavily impressed by personalities, and everything I hear here is a comment toward his personality (mostly good) instead of keeping it about serious topics that he is talking about. This happens always. People are like wow he is amazing, wow wow. Damn it people, let's talk about what he talked about.
Then you should have your head examined. He claims to be a leftist, yet he espouses an ideology and worldview which makes any effective resistance or practicable alternative to capitalist slavery impossible, because that's "authoritarian."
He's got a very strong intellect, but like many strong intellects, he spends so much time in his brain that he doesn't take very good care of his physical self. A visit to an ear, nose and throat specialist, for example, would probably make him much more comfortable
To the best of my knowledge, his actions with regards to his nose are just tics like most great theorists have, and he just comes from a different dialect than Anglo-British English.
I've heard that too. But you can tell by voice that he also has some sort of sinus condition. Who knows, maybe one thing caused the other. The point is both are treatable. There is no reason he should suffer. He's Slovenian I think
I've never heard him mention medication, but in one interview he was asked. Q: What is your most unappealing habit? Ž:The ridiculously excessive tics of my hands while I talk. I kind of doubt he would take such medications since they would change his brain chemistry. I think he would oppose that on principle
Over the time and within last decade, it's evident that an individual's daily activities and inclinations towards their immediate, impulse and long-term goals and desires build the mindset and personality. People work all day, for the most part at a location. The work and culture of place is embedded into their lives. This has moral implications, impact on thinking and disrupts peace. It must be maneuvered with subtle changes. I guess thinkers must address these nuances and intricacies.
Its not the capitalism drives me mad. Its uncontrolled, illegal free market that drives me mad. All those drug companies, food companies and such.. Government dont test those products for our health and safety. Free market companies pays to government to shut their mouth up. Therefore, if we cant even trust our government, what should we do? Thats the real problem. Not just capital economy.
Yeah but you're not forced to take drugs. Let food be your medicine is not just a saying it's the truth. The answers take time and research. But you have the greatest research tool in history, the internet.
You got that entirety wrong, that's crony capitalism and NOT free market. Monopolies are not free market, free market is the lack of those restrictions
Bad subtitle ~@1:48 should be "some kind of vague Keynesian social democracy" not 'vague connection social democracy". He's referring to Keynesian economics, as per 20th century economist John Maynard Keynes.

On the one hand, it would be great if it was something we’d already solved. On the other, it’s safe to say that Žižek was absolutely spot on about universal healthcare being an issue which both touches left wing principles and which is achievable. ''In the twentieth century ,we mabye tried to change the wold too quicly. The time is to interpret it again, to start thinking.''
It's irrelevant.
seee, now you are overthinking it. Of course is inaction legit if you do not need to take action but thats not the point.
As human being we need to think before we act. That's why so many people die everyday! Because of under calculating one crucial information that takes slow thinking. Stereotypical thinking is fast and quick. Which is autopilot and stupid.

Ants have no brains but will gather resources endlessly - they just lack the technologies to destroy the world as we have done.

this is a fundamental psychoanalytic rule of thumb: "don't just do something, sit there!" ... all dynamically trained therapists are steeped in it.

And now our intellectuals are getting out of this stupid dilemma of post modernist pseudo communist nonsense. Slavoj zizek is a person who says that the first wave of communism is utter failure.

If you oust a Neo liberal government like the Tories in the UK and replace them with a socialist democratic one, the power structures remain and the opportunity for exploitation and tyranny still exits.
everywhere you go....people will give you example of canada when explaining things....Canada is good in everything....
Canada wishes.
Shaikh Mohammed Yunus It's for americans who fail geography forever xD
Canada is "very close" :D
***** Misogyny? Yes, but a LOT less than misandry. Try getting laid without being a conformist, a rich man, or a thug in Canada. Good fucking luck.
+RedKing No there isn't
This is very eye opening speech by Zizek, I wonder if he took partly from the stoic school by not acting? I guess if I am right, its pure zizek and its somewhat changing the paradigm
His body can't even handle his reasoning: runny nose, itchiness, loose clothes. "Dear brain, please STAHP."
Never stop, Zizek.
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
I consider myself a classical liberal. A capitalist, that said.
However, I have tremendous respect for the things Zizek says. Even though I don't agree with many, he brings up some very interesting points.
lol Dave Rubin ideology.
@@naxT890 interesting to know that
Feels like 90% of the people watching and commenting on this video don’t understand anything that he says.
People are heavily impressed by personalities, and everything I hear here is a comment toward his personality (mostly good) instead of keeping it about serious topics that he is talking about. This happens always. People are like wow he is amazing, wow wow. Damn it people, let's talk about what he talked about.
Very relevant right now!
love this dude
Then you should have your head examined. He claims to be a leftist, yet he espouses an ideology and worldview which makes any effective resistance or practicable alternative to capitalist slavery impossible, because that's "authoritarian."
Tyler Brown because he is not really anticapitalist, he is post-capitalist.
no truly intelligent public figure could ever be a leftist- for that would not make any sense
Envirocel lol
Stephen Nielsen He is Slovenian. I'm not sure that he's suffering and I do think that if he was he would see a doctor.
He has mentioned that the tics are from a disease which he takes medication for.
This is Zizek at his best, engaging pragmatist, rather than malignant obscurantist.
But you have the greatest research tool in history, the internet.
you're literally the person he's talking about. "it's not the system that's broken, it's just the wrong people leading the system"
You got that entirety wrong, that's crony capitalism and NOT free market. Monopolies are not free market, free market is the lack of those restrictions
Bad subtitle ~@1:48 should be
"some kind of vague Keynesian social democracy" not 'vague connection social democracy".
He's referring to Keynesian economics, as per 20th century economist John Maynard Keynes.
m8 this guy deserves a nobel peace prize for admitting to the fact that no-one has a coherent, superior alternative to capitalism lol
