honestly, i was thrown off when the parents told their kids to date more people, where nowadays it's more common for parents to discourage dating completely.
Thats because back then people encouraged their children to start their lives. Now a days it seems most men and women arent independent enough to even live on their own. There are 28 year old peeps still living with their mom. Its sad.
There’s a difference between what was considered dating then vs now. Back then, parents, by “dating”, meant getting to know others of the opposite sex in a strictly non-sexual way, leave room for Jesus and all that. Parents now are aware that dating usually also means sexual activity. If the parents of back then were aware of that, they’d absolutely not be encouraging it.
I love how she said they were isolated because they didn't have social media. Definitely not isolated lol. They had get togethers, and talked on the phone, made plans after school just like we do. It just took a bit more effort to get in touch with someone back then.
Plus it was the normal way of life. So it was easier to do that with someone. Now we have other ways of doing thing it's harder to get people to do something's because if other ways we can communicate.
I wish this had been a multi-generational episode, with the teens and the elders. It'd be interesting to see the perspectives from people who grew up with these PSAs and to hear how they reacted to them when they were young.
Please do Elders React to these PSAs, as I wonder how much they represented the actual 50s, as opposed to some fantasy the PSAs' writers had about the 50s. Maybe show the elders both the PSAs and this video, so they can react to the kids' thinking people in the 50s had parents telling them to "play the field" romantically.
It might seem like its commonsense, but so does not texting and driving and not watching your phone when you're at the dinner table or out on a date. Commonsense isn't as common as you think.
I'm 19 going to 20 and I can honestly say people these days need this video. Dating has become more dangerous and ungenuine in the past years and some manners and etiquette could help with that.
Every Other Name is Already Taken I'm talking about teen and young adults in general but yes, that's how I manage, i try not to associate with people of the sort.
Seda Min i never mentioned that women need to behave. Obviously these videos are dated. I'm just simply stating that young people nowadays need a lesson on how to be respectful and genuine instead of being a bunch manwhores.
“Our PSAs are more about scientific and educational stuff, that you learn from, not things that are common sense.” Don’t we have “don’t text and drive” PSAs for today’s teens? Sounds like common sense to me....
Alex Vest I would love for them to react to both it'll be so interesting and fascinating to see there reactions to the teens and there responses and there take on stuff such as being polite and whatnot
Back in those days PSAs needed to be made because kids just did not know how to properly be in a relationship. From that time the kids who first saw those PSAs had kids and thought them what they learned and it kept getting passed down it common sense now because we were taught all those years ago
I kind of like those final words because it is true. You expect the new generation to be better than the one 50 years ago just because we have more communication and entertainment than ever but the truth is that without the right direction and lessons people just wonder around like a bunch of confused ants only looking at what is entertaining not what is useful.
Those PSAs made sense for the time. Would be useful now too with how dating has changed but it seems people like to keep things ambiguous now instead of making it clear they're getting to know each other now and keeping things open mutually versus officially being serious between them or if it's appropriate to text often or wait and what not but the rules also change every few years
I think teens and kids now a days learn these type of things from movies and other shows, either on TV or online. Even though TV's where around back then, there wasn't a lot of content, and many families didn't have a TV, probably just radio.
That's what I would think, but then you consider the whole #MeToo movement and not enough people understanding mutual consent. All seems common sense, but too many are apparently lacking it.
Carl Levelwind no idea ... can’t keep up with this 3rd wave nonsense. My guess it’s probably something ‘problematic’ ... My advice run very far away when people use the term ‘problematic’ in a serious nature. 😀
People got married earlier and standards for both genders to act accordingly were strict. I so wish schools taught teens how to properly date and be respectful.
A few weeks ago I was on a train to and from Dallas and both ways I saw groups of teens that could have benefited from basic social PSA's. On the way there a group of boys got on with a few other people and one was an elderly woman with a cane. The boys made her stand as they took up all the seats, putting their feet up to make sure they took up all the seating. On the way back, the train was full but far from packed and a group of boys and girls would not move out of the wheelchair spot for me to park there. When I asked, they laughed and just went back to talking. Unfortunately, I know these are exceptions as I know a number of amazingly sweet boys and girls that are very courteous., but these kids are the only examples of what most of my generation sees.
They should react to more of these. I watch these types of PSAs a lot, not just on relationships. If you do more of these, they should react to Your Thrift Habits, Good Eating Habits, How Much Affection, and Good Table Manners.
Haha some of these kids are like “what does going steady even mean?” and I’m like I low key still use that term. I learned it in a book I read as an 8 year old 😂
I'm so glad that the teens reacted to these PSAs. When I first found these on TH-cam, I had a fun afternoon binging on them. There are SO many more they could react to!
I was a teen in the 60's & my sister in the 50's & none of these ring true. Our parents taught us manners & life & these PSA'S were very laughable........
It's still a good thing to hold a door open doors for girls and for gentleman to treat women with respect. Women need equal pay, equal rights, but they can still be treated with respected and received equal rights.
Allison Stephens Anybody can hold the door open for anybody. Just good general manners, I don't think the gender matters. Everyone should respect everyone.
you seem old fashioned, holding the door open for anyone following you is common courtesy, regardless of gender. I always apologise when I let go of one of those springy doors and realise there was a person behind me. Again it's common courtesy, nothing to do with gender what so ever.

What gets thought
1950: this is how to get a date
2018: this is how you get a due date
Due date?
Why not get elders to react to these PSAs?
That would be more interesting.
Yes! : )
Maybe not now I guess?
I love how she said they were isolated because they didn't have social media.
Definitely not isolated lol. They had get togethers, and talked on the phone, made plans after school just like we do. It just took a bit more effort to get in touch with someone back then.
Ashley Shotwell yesss
I'm 38 now. But I remember when I was a child, I knew just about every single kid in my neighborhood. How many kids can say that now?
Ashley Shotwell actually we isolated 💀 now we don’t have to interact.. seeing pictures is not socializing..
so funny to see how clueless this generation about social interaction back there

Post WW II saw a rise in young marriage vs. the previous generation that dated based on a rating system. At least the youth of the 20s.

Agreed. But it is sexist in a way because it's like women are unable to open doors on their own.
