Your welds actually looked pretty good. Looked like temp was just a smidge too hot but with the constant heating and cooling of the exhaust it’ll temper out just fine. Nice job!
I just picked up a 19 Adventure R. Do you have a build sheet for that thing. A lot of the same upgrades I want to do. Thanks. Your videos convinced me to buy one. Keep up the good work.
I don’t have a build sheet typed up, sorry. But if you watch my 1290 mods video you should be able to get a pretty decent idea of what all is done with it. Hope that helps! And thank you for watching! You’ll love the 1290.
How do you like living with it now? Do you smell the fumes now? I have a 990 with underseat mufflers with no cats, and after a 15 minute ride me and my wife reak of fumes. Now have a 1290sar and love that it doesn't stink.
Good question! I love the sound, and I’m very happy that I did it. I will say that I did notice a VERY slight exhaust smell show up when standing behind the bike at idle. That being said, I have not noticed any change at all while riding. I also happen to have a buddy that has a 990, and that thing stinks to high heaven. My 1290 is nowhere close to that level of smell. I think you’ll be happy with a decat on your bike.
I just did the intake on mine and man it sounds funny when under load. But the power increase is very noticable at 3k and up. It is impressive for sure. Did adding the fuel dongles change your MPG much?
I have been seriously infected with thoughts of replacing my 15 year old war horse GS12Adv with a 2021 1290 SAR.. How are they like to live with on a adv riding basis. Reliability etc? I understand the engine possess nuclear power (and heat, hopefully they fixed the heat issue).. Feel free to ramble back :-)
It’s a hell of a bike for adventure riding. I have 12k miles on mine and I have had no issues at all. The wireless key get a little annoying sometimes, but if you keep it in a tank bag or something near the screen. It rarely gives me trouble. Awesome power, good street manners even with a 21” front tire. I would absolutely recommend this bike to anyone. And I hear the 21 models are even better!
@@EpicAdventuresOffroad thanks a million for the response. I think I will pull the trigger on it once they show up in Canada. I have never been a fan of keyless start but seems like it’s going on everywhere. I tend to keep bikes for a very long time and the GS has been a great machine…it’s a tough decision but let’s see what happens. Will keep ya posted if I can. Sub’ing now
I have a 2020 and experience the same key problems. Maybe they fixed it with the 21 models? It's only freaked out once on me where it didn't want to turn back on but then out of nowhere it just detected the key and that never happened again
Hey man, no I only welded the one piece back on. The inside wall you see is only from the actual cat canister they put into the exhaust when they build it. The rest of the exhaust is single wall, just that section with the cat is double. Good luck with yours. Love the way my bike sounds now. 🤘
According to Rottweiler Performance, (the company that makes the intake and sells decat headers) the bike is totally fine without re-mapping. They did say that the power commander will help you gain a few more hp, but that the bike runs just fine the way it is, with stock fueling.
I struggle here in Australia with excessive heat from the exhaust and been told removing the cat will help. Have you noticed any difference in the heat?
Absolutely. It made a big difference for me. With the fueling dongles, and decat together it’s pretty much a non issue now. And my leg used to get roasted. Lol
All you need is a DC Tig welder. It’s stainless. Honestly I’m not the best at stainless welding - I can make it work, and this was a fairly easy project, so overall it worked out.
According to Rottweiler: Ok to decat and nothing else. But it will run much better if you get a power commander or something to aid in fueling after that. Mine ran great the whole time with no power commander and I had no issues.

@@AdventureTomek no mapping. Rottweiler said no need on these 1290’s. It will be faster if you did throw a power commander in it, but no issues running it without one.

What pannier rack are those?
I was intrigued on your recent mosko moto bag review, they do not stick out too far with the right panier.
Thank you!
The racks are made by Hepco and Becker. They’re the symmetrical racks. 👍 thanks for watching the videos!
Did you weld both pieces back in or just one. It is double walled. Just wondering because I am doing mine this weekend.

Does this require a special welder? Is the material Stainless or just a mild steel?? I'm wanting to do this to my 1090 adventure R
All you need is a DC Tig welder. It’s stainless. Honestly I’m not the best at stainless welding - I can make it work, and this was a fairly easy project, so overall it worked out.
@@EpicAdventuresOffroad thanks for the quick reply. I only have a small 120 volt wire feed welder. I’ll have to source someone who can weld stainless.

How did you remove the baffles in the pipe?
Mine had an Allen key that you removed and the baffles came right out. They were tack welded, but very lightly, so it was easy to pop.
Is this a solution for changing a exhaust without getting check engine?
You’ll need the fuel dongles as well. But otherwise yes.
