I liked your video a lot better than some of the previous ones I watched. They always start out with the cylinder already out of the lock, so for those who are beginner's, we need to have an idea how they got the cylinder out of the lock. And they also did a lot of extra talking that's unnecessary. Your video was very simple and clear to understand. Thanks for sharing!
Just purchased a house with all Defiant and Kwickset, and 8 different keys! Plus a couple with no key at all. Your videos have been extremely helpful and have surely saved me a bunch of $. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. It’s helpful. However, I have a locked doorknob I am trying to get off. Is there a way to pull it off while locked (now I sound like a thief). I installed the lock on my pantry a few days ago to stop one particular child from eating granola bars all day and refusing meals. Next thing I know the key wouldn’t insert all the way. Another curious child stuck a kabob stick in there and broke it. So now I need to figure out how to open the lock or get the doorknob off without breaking the wood door. Any advice?
Is there anyway to change the direction the key unlocks? When turning my key clock-wise, it locks. This is counter intuitive because the handle is on the left side of the door and it locks opposite of the deadbolt.
So in order to re-center the thumbturn you'll need to align the thumbpiece with the tail piece. Once you start to reassemble everything you'll want to align the thumbturn to correlate with tail in the direction you'd like. If it's not aligning by simply twisting the thumbturn to align, you can also "unlock" the knob and remove the outer knob and cylinder, then reinstall everything and only once you have it aligned, re-install the outer knob!
That is the tricky part lol The real trick is getting the bible (thin piece on top of the cylinder) to the upright position. Some are tougher than others, sometimes a big pair of tweezers helps as you hold the front with your thumb or pointer finger tip. In the future you can always put your key or any key that fits into the keyway during the process just to keep it from falling in! Most defiants add the hooks on the cylinders to prevent that now a days.
@@LockandKilo Thank you, I did get it out after fussing with it for maybe 20 minutes. I found it came out easily if I kept it tipped rather than trying to straighten it out inside the knob which isn’t possible.
I can’t get the knob off the clip through I know I have to turn it that’s not the problem I just can’t get it to come loose whatever I poke in there it just won’t do anything 😕
@@LockandKilo ok thanks I will have to try that I had replace a door knob and the first one gave to problems but this one won’t but it’s on my vacation home so I’m not to worried about it at the moment but thanks!
@@tannersmyly On Defiants, they are pretty cheaply made locks so there is a possibility that the retainer can break. So, just be careful taking it off if it's the only one you have as I have had a few of them break on me. You'll go to slide it back on and it won't snap back in basically and you'll go to open the door and it'll just pull off. Just a heads up! 99% of the time it goes smoothly, some lubricant definitely helps tho lol
One way to help you is to insert your key into the keyway all the way and then press the door knob into place. Sometimes the cylinder will catch if it isn’t completely straight going on.
Some other models have an allen lol Those will usually be visible, you won't have to twist the knob to find it. Also, some models have to be picked or have the key turned in order to do this. I have been meaning to get those videos out lol
@@LockandKilo haha yeah. If you do the math, it makes sense. If someone with bad intent approaches your unlocked door, then stealing your knob is probably the last thing they’d take. Let’s hope locksport folks don’t run out of cores to play with or you might have a door knob crime spree on your hands 🤪🥸
You continue to assume this hardwares gender. Kidding or course. This is what I was looking for! Thanks. EDIT: I see a lot of comments. About how you didn’t rekey the lock……… The title specifically says you’re showing how to disassemble it TO rekey it, not that you’re showing how to rekey it. I think they’re being a little harsh, when they apparently didn’t read the title.
How to Disassemble a Defiant Doorknob? turn the knob and it falls apart lol. yes I'm exaggerating a little but i avoid Defiants unless I have to match a finish like polished brass or existing locks or the dreaded budget. High tech version of this situation is Milocks. Not my first choice 😅
Yes, another commenter also said this lol.. this is one of my earlier videos when this channel was made to only help Locksmith's in the field. When they ask "how to rekey a defiant knob", they meant how to disassemble it as they already know how to rekey. But, I did make a follow up video as this channel kind of blew up on TH-cam shortly after I made this video. I also put it as an end-screen on this video, but here is the link if you need help with the actual rekeying process. th-cam.com/video/SYDjE9S0-BM/w-d-xo.html

My rental has locks with no keys. Can I rekey them to be able to use the keys I have for the other doors? I was thinking I need to buy all new locks.
Thanks for the good info!
Did you use the same key to rekey?

@LockandKilo I had to push a clip down and then press it together. Great video thanks!
I was looking at another doorknob the other day and spotted that hole. I incorrectly assumed that it was for a tiny Allen wrench.

Is this an entry knob? Does this mean someone could walk up to to a Defiant knob and pop it off from the outside? 🧐
It has to be in the unlocked position lol
@@LockandKilo so any trusting folks with defiant door locks could be knobless within 5 seconds. That’s pretty crazy.
