Was very very poor for many years. Used to bring home the small toilet paper rolls left over in the school bathrooms. Worked a corner store with a laundromat attached.... People usually left a whole load worth of detergent in jugs. When I dumped trash I would collect the leftovers. To this day, I have all the lights off in my house at night except one bulb in the room I am in.

Most of these are frugality in times of need. Cheap is when you spend an hour of time online to save a few dollars shopping online when you have $20,000 in the bank.

I eat a lot of soups and pad them out with broth, flour, or rice. Eat enough soup and you're full, guaranteed. I also like to meal prep.

My spouse and I survived for several months on just white rice - sometimes our friends would invite us over to feed us, they probably saved us ngl

Lived on potatoes for weeks.... The hard times are good for us, in the end. I really appreciate everything I have now. Can afford anything I want now, and now I don't want anything.

@@martha-anastasia God I wish that were me. We're both working full time and still living paycheck to paycheck. But at least we have food and shelter now.

Please use food banks if you need to. They really saved me. I was actually living below my means. But a combination of different things led to me literally having no money. So thankful for the local food banks.
PRO TIP: Coinstar machines in the United States allow you to donate all your coins to Feeding America, and other charities, without the usual 10% fee. A great way to get rid of your loose change and help others.

Have you guys applied for any grants or apprenticeships at the community college? Electric power companies have sponsored electric lineman (or linewoman) training. Good luck.

@@tshadow6 Thank you :) Unfortunately I'm disabled, so I can't do any kind of labor jobs, which throws out every apprenticeship I could find unfortunately... I'm going to be taking a medical coding certification course, so I'm hoping I can get a decent paying job after that

    The 2ways I save money
1)shop at places like sam's club or Costco for the basics like meat and canned goods;you'll be surprised how much you'll save in the long run (especially if you have a chest freezer)
2)ask about a veteran discount (it'll surprise you how much you save , especially on a big ticket item)

Second this. I have a Costco membership and how much I save in meat, cat food, and cat litter alone throughout the year more than pays for it.

First example I’ve done in parking lot of Illinois ALDI (during shopping trip, no after hour scavenger). Most I’ve collected is $2.75, 25 cents per cart (trolley).

My first "job" was in '72 my cousin and l would collect shopping carts from the government warf, ferry terminal (people would push groceries to terminal then walk on and comercial fishermen shopping from warf) and apartment parking lots. We'd then sort and return them to the store and go find the manager. Our fee was 25 cents a cart we'd make $20-$30 on a day on the weekend that was a lot of money for two 7-year-olds in '72. Chocolate bars were 20 cents. We'd even go rent a pool table in one pool hall that let us in (it was illegal for under 19 to enter). The guy put us near the back door and told us to book it if cop came in.

That's some serious physical work for age seven. LOL, where I lived a chocolate bar was 10 cents in '72.

Got an apartment on the top floor ( there were only 3 floors) so my downstairs neighbor would "help" heat my apartment, also only had electronics plugged in while in use. Used a power strip for multiple things and unplugged them to make it easier. Utility bill was always low.

Gas prices are going through the roof in my country, so I bought a few electric space heaters since electricity is cheaper than gas, though I barely use them and mostly hunddle under one or two blankets

I squirrel away cash too. Usually in clothes that are being put away for summer/winter. Just swapped my closet for the summer and found a wad of singles in the pocket of a light jacket.
Being a doorbuster at the grocery store when they open is a good way to get discounted, short dated items.
Beans, rice, potatoes, carrots, white bread, pasta. You won't be hungry.

I don't understand how hanging clothes to dry is cheap... Like, ever since I left my parent's home I never had enought room nor could I afford an automatic dryer, so I hang my laundry inside my place...
Not eating is not cheap either. It's desperate. For earth sakes, if you can't afford to eat out, just buy can food, rice, potatoes! Na dif you can't afford those... Condolences.

Ate canned pea soup 3-4 times per week. It cost 60 cents per can, one can worth two meals. I also walked back and forth between two major supermarket chains that were about 5 kilometers apart figuring out the best savings. Always had cash for some soft drinks as a result, though.

I don't wash my hands all the time either if I have a wet washcloth or rag out at the sink tat still has plenty of suds left on it
Then I'll use the wash cloth and dry my hands on a towel
I don't use sanitizer it's usually alcohol and aloe vera instead I buy a small bottle of 91 percent rubbing alcohol pour into a new spray bottle then spray my hands and arms and rub in good
