These guys look like a who's who of people you would encounter at a little league game or at a kids soccer game or at a bbq at your friend's house. Also don't forget that the alternate is named joe lmao
Teams in Europe are well- funded by their governments, so a lot of them look alike that. But your observation was true of the US skip Shuster for years. But he decided to change his diet and get into shape. He's noticeably more fit here than he was before. Not sure if it necessarily played into winning the gold here. Edin had an uncharacteristically off game here, and the US took advantage.
This was one of the best curling matches I've ever seen but I've only been following the sport for twenty years, mostly during the Olympics. Both teams were so technically good until the slightest of errors opened up a perfectly thrown rock to break the match open. I love that this is on this site and I've now saved it.
woke up this morning and thought about funny sounding olympic sports like speed walking, got around to curling and found it to be not what I expected at all. This game has a very complex strategic approach and tactics that I cannot really relate to any other game. It seems from my first time watching to be a combination of a precision sport and some sort of twist to chess, where you create the board as you play. First time watching this sport, was fairly impressed.
My dad doesn't really watch the Olympics like me and my mom but when he found out what curling was my dad was inspired to make his own curling area in the backyard and now his kids have to do curling. So yeah he got way too into the sport.
@4:40 as the two captains are down by the house (target) you can see them exchange pleasantries. Both these teams practiced and hung out together during the Olympics. "Hey, let's have some fun boys." "Good game, right?" "Good game!" If nothing else, this is why we need the Olympics. Baron de Coubertin was right.
i hate to undercut your point, because the spirit of curling really does in my opinion embody the spirit of the olympics, but i am pretty sure the voices we hear at that time are the american team down at the other end of the ice getting ready to throw. they were pretty big underdogs, so i could see them having a "hey let's just go out there and enjoy ourselves" mindset.
I'm your typical American, love football, beer fighting, guns, my country, but BY GOLLY this just might be my new favorite sport. Why has my country censored me from this beautiful sport for so many years of my life? The combination of physicality, accuracy, game planning, teamwork, reflexes and geometry make this such an amazing sport. Why couldn't I have born in a country like Sweden or Canada where this amazing sport is more popular? When the covy-19 ends id love to attend a curling game somewhere in Europe or Canada
It’s a thinking game as much as it is skill game. It’s like chess on ice, except the pieces can each move in nearly infinite ways. Quite frankly, it’s too complex for most Americans. But good on you for becoming a convert.
4:40 End 1 (0-0) 14:20 End 2 (Sweden 2-0) 28:30 End 3 (Tied 2-2) 44:30 End 4 (USA 3-2) 1:04:30 End 5 (Sweden 4-3) 1:25:00 End 6 (USA 5-4) 1:44:30 End 7 (Tied 5-5) 2:03:00 End 8 (USA 10-5)...the key shot occurs at 2:18:55 2:20:00 End 9 (USA 10-7) 2:29:45 End 10 (USA 10-7) 2:37:50 USA wins Gold Medal!
There are a great deal of similarities between the storyline and outcome of this and the 1980 hockey contests with the Soviet Union. I never really knew what curling was about before this.
Yes, these guys were written off. Much to their credit they dug deep, got some traction, and came back stronger than ever. Matt Hamilton is in my home club. I watched him come up from High School. He let me hold the gold medal. Enuff said.
The Swedish team shows up looking like highly trained athletes who are here to compete on the largest stage in curling. The American team seems like a bunch of dads hanging out before the BBQ. 😎😂🇺🇸 🍺🍺🍺
That is the great thing about curling. It takes all kinds. Some of of the women who I have seen winning look like they could almost qualify for my 600 pound life, and make this US team look like gym jocks by comparision. You have fit men, bald men, fat women, fat men, fit women, thin women, tall men, short men, short women, storky ones, all types can play and do well at the game if they have the skill and strategy.
No one talks about the sportsmanship at the end. When Niklas does his "spin-a-rama", USA decides not to sweep it out just to let it be fun. There was still a low chance for sweden to win since it was in, but since Niklas realised that is was an easily sweepable stone, he conceded defeat. Cudos to both teams for sportsmanship
I still don't know much about curling but I love the sport. I wrote about it in sixth grade when we were asked what was our favorite winter Olympic sport and I chose curling.
@@TheTerranscout The captain has been in elite American curling for a while though. But, yeah, it isn't young amazing athletes with tons of money like most of the rest of the Olympics. About half the U.S. curlers are from Minnesota, Wisconsin or Michigan. It's kind of like hockey is or at least was.
Okay so the reason they are “brushing” the ice is to create liquid through friction. This causes the stone to speed up or turn depending on where you brush.
Speed up, yes, but turning is interesting. Whether it curls more or less mostly depends on who's sweeping it, if you are sweeping against the curl it curls less, if you sweep *with* the curl (or at the very end once it's already moving) it'll curl more.
I'm fascinated by this - the last time I saw curling was on TV from Scotland when I was 5 - I don't think the shooter actually glided down the ice with the stone in those days. It's late at night but I was mesmerised. Until the commentator said "Get the front stones". And then THAT TUNE started in my head and broke the spell - but I think I've found a new fascination !
Official person walks intro random downtown American bar and approaches the first group he sees… “Hey you four, come with me, where going to the Olympics!”
From now on they should switch the color of the yellow stone to blue or should they change the colors of the stones to the official colors every Winter Olympics.
I don’t know why but I was so tired while watching this I was falling asleep the whole time but I had to stay awake for something 8 had to get ready for
There's a lot of enthusiastic calls on Canadian broadcasts. These WCF calls are usually pretty sedate. The lead guy here, Hans Frauenlob, is from New Zealand by way of Ontario Canada. He does a really good job here.
I’m a year late, but if you’re still interested, it’s so they could retain the last stone going into the next end, since in a tied end, you keep last stone. It’s a big advantage in the end to have the last stone, on par with having the serve in Tennis. So you want to maximize your advantage by getting at least 2 points when you have last stone.
I KNEW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT CURLING UNTIL TODAY! THIS OLYMPICS HAS INTRODUCED THIS GAME OF CURLING TO ME AND MANY OTHER VIEWERS. I'VE NEVER BEEN MORE EXCITED IN MY LIFE ABOUT A TEAM MAKING AN INCREDIBLE PLAY THAN WHEN TEAM USA WON 2 POINTS AT 43:33. John, Matt, Tyler, and John are the most American names ever.
Not as the most korean female curling team of Kim, Kim, Kim, Kim under the coaching of Kim, and a substitute named Kim.
They even looked like they are four bff dads just having fun on a beerday
I wouldn’t doubt they are all part time brewmasters in training in Boulder Colorado, too. Lol! Jk

Why is the American team just like a bunch of dads on the weekend and the Sweden team are all toned professionals?
Edit: grammar

@@smoothpants but bro even then usa is top on medal tally
cuz dads on the weekend are OP
Sweden players are so hot!!!
Because Sweden players from IKEA and Americans from COSTCO
Never could I have imagined this sport being so hype. 2018 US men’s curling team was something else!

As an American, I have to say
Those are some HANDSOME Swedes!
Yeah the american dudes look like suburban dads
yes but they looked really pissed they lost unsportsmenship
It's funny cuz Sweden looks like they been here before and the U.S. team looks like they stumbled upon this as a hobby 😂👏🏿
2:19:00 best 15 seconds in US Curling history right here
Edin knew he teed it up but John still had to make the shot and it was bolt.

It is very much like chess in a sense that sometimes the best strategy is to sacrifice a point in order to get a later advantage.
I remember staying up until like 4AM to watch this entire match. Oh man, was it worth it.
I already know the outcomes and this is still as exciting when you're watching it live. Both teams nothing but skill.
Anyone else watching this again in January '21? I can't get enough of this match and the story of this U.S. team!

Sweden's sportsmanship was great. Loved the spin a for the last stone too
What's even more remarkable about the circus shot is where it ended.
no they were pissed when the medals were giving
Actually, they were extremely gracious during the medal ceremony.@@tawnybees9973
I came here from recommendation, now im addicted watching this sport:(

First time watching Curling, their accuracy and muscle memory needs to be studied by a university cause wow the touch is immaculate.
