  • In 2011, New York City was gripped with terror as Maksim Gelman went on a violent rampage. His spree of random stabbings, carjackings, and assaults left four dead and several critically injured, all while he showed no remorse or fear of consequences.
"Killing Spree" is a gripping true crime TV series that examines the chain of events that led some of the most infamous killing sprees in criminal history.

Here's the craziest part. Joseph Lozito is stabbed on the subway by killer Maksim Gelman while two armed police officers are just feet away in the conductor's booth. One of those officers, Terrance Howell, testified that he hid from Gelman because he thought he had a gun. It wasn't until a seriously injured Lozito disarmed Gelman of a knife that the police came out of hiding. New York City argued, and Judge Margaret Chan ruled, that the police had no special duty to protect Lozito or anyone else on that train from Gelman.

What they left off is how the two cops hid in the subway conductor's booth as gelman banged on the door claiming to be police and as he stabbed Lozito, they heroically emerged once Lozito had him down. Lozito sued the City of NY and the NYPD - only to have the case dismissed on the grounds that the "police have no duty to protect any individual". The two cops who hid were awarded the keys to the city by Mayor for Life Bloomberg.
i had a run in with Gelman five weeks before his rampage, he approached my car as I was waiting at a red light and motioned for me to lower my window - a little voice went off in my head that I had a very bad problem as I saw him from the corner of my eye across the street. I had closed my windows and locked the doors before he came up to me - I looked straight into his eyes and knew this was serious. I shook my head at him and looked straight ahead waiting for the light to change - he walked in front of my car in a rage pointed at me, then jumped into the car he was driving parked on the sidewalk and slammed on the gas to cut me off. He boxed me in, matched every move I made to go around him - until he was caught in the intersection of Coney Island Ave and Ave X - when the light changed and he was now blocking traffic - the whole time I could see his reflection in his rear view mirror - he was screaming at himself and in a rage - he did the same thing at the next intersection where I could finally make a turn and avoid him - i thought to call the police, but that specific precinct is known as the most useless and corrupt in Brooklyn and thought better of it.
Always trust that little voice in your head - on another interview gelman talked about how he went up to cars and got the driver to lower their window and then put a knife to their throat. I know I would have been his first carjacking if I didn't listen that little voice.. All this happened just driving to the supermarket in NYC.

This story is similar to the story I’m writing 😅
    It’s called The Fractured Mind:
    Part 1: The Breaking Point
In the dimly lit corners of his cluttered bedroom, Michael sat, his thoughts a cacophony of distorted whispers and pulsing anger. For years, the strained relationship with his stepfather, Richard, had been a source of festering resentment. This evening, as bitter words flew like sparks in a tinderbox, Michael's fractured reality shattered completely. The argument escalated, driven by Michael's delusions of persecution and unyielded misunderstandings.
Armed with the frenetic energy of his mania and guided by the sinister voices that only he could hear, Michael grabbed a kitchen knife. The confrontation with Richard ended in tragedy, with the older man's life extinguished amidst a frenzy of misguided self-defense, his body left with nearly fifty stab wounds.
    Part 2: The Descent
With Richard's lifeless form behind him, Michael fled into the night, his mind a maelstrom of paranoia and desperation. He found himself outside the home of Emily, the object of his unrequited affections. Emily, who had gently rebuffed his advances, became another symbol of rejection and betrayal in Michael’s unraveling psyche.
In a horrific sequence, he confronted Emily's mother first, seeing her as a barrier to his imagined love. The encounter quickly turned violent, leaving another innocent life taken by his hands. Driven deeper into madness, he climbed to Emily’s room. Her screams echoed into the void as Michael, now completely lost to his psychosis, silenced her forever.
    Part 3: The Escape
As dawn broke, Michael’s spree of violence continued, his paranoia painting every bystander as an assassin. His escape plan was frantic and ill-conceived-he attempted to carjack multiple vehicles, each attempt more desperate than the last. Passersby who stumbled into his path were met with rage and violence.
Finding his way to the subway, Michael hoped to blend in with the morning commuters. The enclosed space of the train car amplified his anxiety and hallucinations, making him believe that everyone was whispering about capturing him, turning him in. In a final act of desperation, he forced the train to stop, using the chaos to slip away into the city’s underbelly.
Part 4: The End of the Line
The manhunt for Michael ended quietly in a forgotten alley of the sprawling city. As the law enforcement closed in, Michael, cornered and exhausted, finally surrendered. The silence after his capture was deafening. His mind, once a battlefield of voices and visions, fell into a desolate calm as reality settled around him.
Michael faced the consequences of his actions, a tragic culmination of untreated mental illness and spiraled misconceptions. His trial was a somber affair, focusing not only on his crimes but on the societal and systemic failures that failed to intervene before tragedy struck.
In the quiet aftermath, as Michael began his long treatment under state care, the community grappled with the echoes of his actions. The story of Michael, a man led astray by the darkest corners of his mind, served as a mournful reminder of the delicate threads that hold human psyche together.

Also, you spend like 20 years on death row while on the other hand life is life. Can be 70+ years with thousands of random criminals you’re forced to interact with.
