The massive problem with Open World Games...

  • A switch up from Lethal Company style videos, going back to some of my old roots and making a video essay about something thats been on my mind for some time now. I'm not too sure how many people share the same opinion as me, but I'm personally getting bored of the whole open world game craze thats been going around for a while now, they're all sorta becoming the same at this point. Keep in mind that this is all one great big opinion on the TREND of open world games, not open world games as a GENRE, there are loads of fun open world games, but it feels like alot of game studios have slipped into some weird pattern of immediately assuming they need to make their game open world because it sells well, and then spending too much time either on the environment, detracting from the story, OR cramming it so full of random things that it starts to feel a bit meaningless. Either way, this is just something I've picked up on and wanted to say something about it.
Really though, Thank you everyone so much for all of the support, it's absolutely unreal to me that this many people actually took the time out of their day to watch my videos and even subscribe. I started making videos simply because I felt like being creative, and I also just wanted a place to share some of the old clips I have on my hard drive with my friends, so the fact that this channel has grown as much as it has is already mind numbing to me. Hopefully, with a little bit of luck and effort, this channel can keep growing even more into the future, and I can keep sharing some of my favorite memories with all of you!
I know I joke about it in the videos, but subscribing or leaving a like, or even just letting me know in the comments what you liked or didn't like about the video helps me make better content and lets me know what you actually want to see, so quite literally ANY feedback is appreciated :)

"Directionally challenged" is one of my favorite terms because lord I get that so much LMAO! I loved putting this on in the background and working, it boosted my mood and I love hearing others thoughts on certain games!

what a wonderful exploration into something I was feeling, but not observing!! I've been feeling something similar when it comes to my partner, they have ADHD, and I love helping them organize what they'll do with their evening, and games have been slowly going down and down in priority, and I think this explains why!! with just jumping on the open world trend, games just. don't lead you anywhere. I think you nailed it when you said that they are afraid to bring you on a path, and my poor love, who relaxes with a mentally stimulating task, has been finding games less and less interesting and more aimless, and with the ADHD, it's just too much of a task to hunt down your own story. wonderful video!

Horribly underrated video - this is actually a well edited and well paced video essay, and I do wish more people see this!

I was a huge fan of Crysis and how Crysis 3 was able to balance a levelled, almost linear play path with an open world experience. There was a clear order to each level, but it was more or less up to the player how they would go about it, both in what was provided in the sandbox and the mechanics of gameplay. Halo was another game where you could choose how to go about clearing a level that was even more linearly designed, unlike a lot of other shooters, and I think that's what made the game so replayable for me. On the other hand, Halo Infinite was a campaign I hardly remember outside of boss fights and cutscenes.

I was going through your Lethal Company videos and was quite surprised to find this video essay on your channel.
I think it's quite good and I hope TH-cam pushes it to more people.

Love the video! I can agree with a lot of the opinions you shared - not every game needs to be "open world". I love some linear games, like Portal 2, and I hope more developers branch out and don't just follow trends.
