The thing is she wasn’t hurting people, but she was scamming. She got brand deals specifically because she’d make comments about wanting to leave and not being able to, and there were a LOT of people donating money to try and help her.

while she is faking, I do think it is good to note that Amish communities all have their own different opinions on what modern technology is or is not acceptable. There is also Rumspringa, which, a lot of Amish people leave home for that, but a lot also stay home and just do not adhere to all of their communties rules. Rumspringa would not be the case for her though, because of her age.

The Amish are allowed internet access for work such as advertising services however, as far as I know they aren't allowed technology for pleasure/entertainment etc.
Most of the Amish sects allow phones. They usually have to be placed in their barns or must be charged in their barns. You'd really be shocked at how many of the Amish have smartphones and how to use them.

I grew up in a community mixed between fully secular folks and conservative Mennonite folks (close to Amish practice but they use simple tech for ease and quality of life), and none of us ever called the Mennonites plain. That just feels rude.
They don't use zippers not because they are modern but because they are easy to open and thus can lead to temptation so they have buttons sewn on it a way that they are covered and therefore harder to open

I was waiting for this to come out, as well as confused as hell it took so long. I grew up in a heavily Amish populated area in Ohio and it was something of an open joke. She was no different than, say, I was - just another english (everyone not amish is english) doing the gig. In my case it was working in a high tourism area and being told to go put on a scratchy bonnet, some rather unflattering dresses and shoes that were uglier than most orthopedic ones and go get to work at the register. I know enough Pennsylvanian Dutch to get by, knew the ones who really were so I had coverage from friends - go to those tourist areas and at least half the waitstaff, cashiers, tour guides, etc are just doing the job. You clock out, change into your jeans, leave thru one of the back doors, and try to get to your car without someone matching you up with who you seemed the just an hour ago. It's a gig. She could have passed as an Mennonite, but Amish? The deacons finds out (and they will, I've known girls get in serious trouble because they didn't use the right pin to keep their bonnet on, let alone this) and words like 'shunning' and 'punishment duties' start getting yelled pretty loudly. No. There was never a shot in hell, and honestly, I think a lot of us just sat and laughed a bit, wondering when the balloon was gonna pop. (Hades, I did the gig in a store fooling tourists, who was I to blow the gaffe?) Old orders still practice hard core shunning. Never talking to family again, never seeing a funeral, a wedding, a baby, anything. Money gone (cause it's all gone to dad and the deacons), no marriage offers. This was never gonna be real. Just kind of a joke to do what a ton of Amish areas are built on - a fool and their money are soon parted, and if people WANT to be fooled, well, who are we to stop them? It's just she didn't seem to grasp when the joke was up. Now though, comes the possibility this could get serious offline. I know everyone likes to view the Amish as simple, kind, placid, etc. Some are. But some are violent, abusive, sexual predators who don't like their money being effected. I'd rather the actual Italian mob or a city gang was annoyed with me. Gonna be 'interesting'. Hope she is okay.
Technically, its possible for an Amish young adult to be on tiktok, but they'd also be living among us, the non-plain (English being their term) people, not in the Amish community like this TikToker made it sound like. Im not even sure any cell carriers have towers out there, but there might be a landline at a community center to call emergency services? Late Amish teens on their Rumspringa who decide to leave the community to live among us "English" before they make a decision to be baptized. That's if they choose to return to living as an Amish member.
I'm not AT ALL surprised that a homeschooled kid has mental health issues! It's super weird that the "friend" views phases like emo as a mental health issue & bad. The "friend" also only needed to show the picture with her & her family, as parents wouldn't be wearing modern clothes of a middle class/desk workers.

The public school system is a joke, so saying someone who is homeschooled is prone to mental health issues is hardly a solid argument. Not all parents want their kids indoctrinated, or filled with vaccinations just to be able to attend. Not to mention the mass shootings, bullies, predators and just overall toxicity of certain people. If you’re a kid and not homeschooled I’m sorry. If you’re a parent and you’re still living with the misconception of children who are homeschooled, do better. Your kids deserve it and it’s worth it.

2:07 I know nothing about her, the story, any of it. But this stuck out to me. The bright red clothing or apron. I’m pretty sure they can’t wear red…..I don’t know if that will be touched on in this video but that was a huge red flag to me. (Haha didn’t mean to make a pun) I believe it can be different in Amish communities so some places are stricter then others but I’ve always remembered a documentary talking about the importance of the clothing and the colors. Colors usually off limits are red, gold, orange, barbie pink, bright yellow and anything neon or “flashy” bc they’re considered too worldly or attention grabbing. They prefer subdued colors and no patterns and they even think buttons on women’s clothes are too ornamental. Usually they wear black, grey, blue, burgundy, brown, purple, white or green. Now I’ve got to watch the rest of the video but it’s not looking good for her.

For the record I lived in Amish county for quite a while and talk to some pretty high profile people who were part of the sales industry. And one of the weird things that Amish people actually do is buy up pristine classic cars despite the fact that they can't really own them. And they store them in barns like they're hoarding gold and appreciating in value. Honestly very strange but not the worst idea I've ever seen. Cheers
Honestly it really depends on the person in that community. There was an Amish kid that went to school with my brother. He asked him to prove he was allowed to have a phone and the friend shows him a selfish of his cousin working in a field
We have Mennonites in my country. Back in 2007 or so, I first got internet at home and I was on summer break from school. A Mennonite guy sent me a friend request on some pre-Facebook kind of site. We chatted for almost 8 hours. I think he knew that I knew it was total shyte. But it was hilarious. At the end, I found out the guy was actually at work and wasted an entire work day joking around with me. We met later on and are still friends to this day. It was a hilarious start to a friendship though.
Saw this covered on the DWKT podcast. People mostly cared I think because she was raising awareness about the abuse going on supposedly in her community she was afraid to leave. She spun a narrative about how she was a victim looking to escape, then posted the video she did being all serious and kinda scared looking saying things completely contradictory to what she previously said. I think she was deliberately trying to make people scared given that context tbh.
people who were homeschooled werent really amish, they do a lot of stuff that goes with being amish like not having tvs and going in the woods, growing you're own stuff and making their own stuff... but of what i know, they always had phones. i knew a lot of kids growing up that didnt have a tv or any screens so thats probably what people are getting confused at
I just talked to two amish guys at a gun auction they were very talkative and social and when I worked at kmart they came in all the time. Plus here in America you can go to Amish country and buy from them so they are around non amish all the time. So its possible that she could have been told about tik tok.

Many amish communities have fridges that run on propane. I'm not aware of any amish community that would allow those magnets with pictures of people's faces on them. I live in Central Pennsylvania. Amish and Mennonite families are a part of daily life here. I’m PA Dutch but here in PA they don’t refer to themselves as “plain people”. It’s common out west but only in a small community. Three Amish call outsiders “English”. But Amish can use technology and go out on their own for Rumspringa. Gives them time to see which life they prefer. But the way people react in regards to her post about leaving, goes to show they really aren’t educated in how the Amish community works. They make them out to be violent people and they simply aren’t. I spent a lot of time with the Amish bc my grandfather was a farrier and cared for their horses and they simply have rules no different than everyone else. The lineage is a whole different story.
