Great video with zero errors to my perception. Having a few games under the belt and also having read the rulebook at least twice, this video helped me to clarify some details. IT was also very enjoyable. Good work!
This was an EPIC stream, sorry I missed it! Just got my copy for Christmas and this video was really useful for picking up all the details. Thanks so much!
57:15 does imhotep discounts two or one resource? I thought that "1 wood OR 1 food" meant that I can cancel the foor OR the wood, so the cost would be 1 ore + (1 food OR 1 wood)
Rewatching as I'm seriously considering getting this game soonish, just have to save a little bit (it's a bit pricey :D). I'm still on my quest to find a decent civ game. I've got Tapestry, and while I was initially so angry at that game when I finally accepted the fact it's not a civ game not in any classical sense, at least, I learnt to love it, I now enjoy it, but I'm still not satisfied. I've got Through the Ages and it IS a true civ game but it feels a little bit dry; perhaps it's the absence of the map, perhaps it's the very abstract fights or something else, I don't know. I love it, I'll always play it if offered but I'm still looking. This one definitely seems the ticket, initially I was put off due to the limited number of rounds but after rewatching I can confidently say it's not going to be an issue. Btw that is one resilient port over there, resisting assimilation so feverishly :) EDIT: After having watched to the end, I must say this is what I'm looking for in a game. A story to tell! :D These battles were amazing, everything that was happening was so epic, even the "boring turns" spent on advancing because those tell a story too, especially if you have role-playing-prone players :)
Follow-up: got it a few days ago, played two times already, loving it! :D And we somehow missed the fact that civ advances happen automatically when you research the associated tech, we were buying them separately, made stuff extra hard for us I guess.
Was considering getting this game so I had to look up some sort of good tutorial for it. This and the gameplay was a great way to see how it goes. Definitely planning on getting it now, maybe for Christmas. I just have to find where to get one- it's pretty hard finding places to buy board games in my country
3:33:00 Egypt makes its 4th action of the turn, without using the free action and spending 2 happiness tokens. (Collect, advance, improve mood, and collect again).
Starts ca 2:40. Looks very nice this. Hopefully one could play without the advanced rules /special civs the first time. Good video, will probably buy the game after seeing it in action.
Just my 2 cents. I own and have played the original game and playing with the “advanced rules”/ special civs seems to add very little rules overhead comparatively, but seems to add a lot of needed depth to the base game. Personally, if you have experience with these type of games I’d just run with the entire set at the outset.
Having played thsi with different new players I do advice playing teh basic version first un less everybody is a civ fanatic. This is an amazing game but the risk for analasys-paralysis is real and the first game all advanmcements and actions and unist and cards are new to you (any good opponent wil alos point out aletrative optiosn for you when youy.. displease them ). The AP is a riski with this one if you are prone to have it.@@msa4998
2:37:00 Shouldn't the priesthood let them advance mathematics without paying the 2 gold? Or does that only come into effect after you've unlock science with mathematics?
SHORTER GAME For a shorter game that lasts 4 Ages, do the following: ✦ Each player starts with 2 Settlers. ✦ During the Free Advance part of the Status Phase, each player gets 2 Advances instead of 1. Players get their first Advance in turn order, then continue to their second Advance, also in turn order. The first player about to start such a Round, rolls a die and if the die result is within the depicted range, the game ends immediately with a final Status Phase (consisting only of Completing Objectives). A Wonderful Ending: The game ends if a player constructs a Wonder during oneof the last 5 Rounds of the game (those with red numbers). Once the Wonder is built, finish the current Round and then the game ends immediately with a final Status Phase (consisting only of Completing Objectives)
I have the old first edition and the expansions with monument upgrades and was planning on painting everything at some point. Should I upgrade to the new edition first?
My LGS only have the basic game with the Elephant om the covarage. It is allt cheaper though, almost a Thord of the Price so what do you get in this big box version that is not in the base game?
Your LGS might actually just have the earlier edition, both have elephants on the cover. Key difference is that Monumental Edition has base game and the Civilizations and Aztecs expansions in one box.
Dumb question, but the new rules on BGG say for movement, "A group is defined as 1 or more Units moving from the same starting space to the same destination space at the same time. You Move Units in any order you wish. Units in the same space do not have to Move to the same destination (or at the same time) but are regarded as two (or more) different groups if they don’t." So how can you move two settlers that start on the same hex, to two different hexes for one action, since it says, "Units in the same space do not have to Move to the same destination (or at the same time) but are regarded as two (or more) different groups if they don’t." Wouldn't moving them to two different destination hexes mean it's two actions?
Not a dumb question. It would not be two different actions, it would be two different groups that move. Each Move action allows you to move 3 different groups. So, if you have two settlers in the same space, and you move both of them to different places - that is two different groups. If we played this wrong, apologies - it was a long day :)
@@GamingRulesVideos Ah, ok, then yes I think it was played wrong, as red moved two settlers at the beginning to two different hexes, but counted it as one action. Thanks! Love the video, and we're playing this week, so thank you!
@@GamingRulesVideos Do you mean "It would NOT be two different actions"? In one action you can move three groups of Units. Two Settlers starting in the same space, moving to different spaces count as two different groups, using 2/3 of the Move action.
1:46:20 Looks like Egypt got cheated out of a culture token. He had 3 tokens, and fought 2 battles, and one of the other players says you can't have more than 4 with embalming. But the rulebook says "If you already have more than 4 culture tokens, you do not receive additional tokens from this advance." Well, he had 3, then gained 1 from the first battle, and now he has 4. Four is not more than 4, so he should have been allowed to take the 5th one for his second battle, and then he would not get any further tokens from battles.
Now maybe I’m wrong (and possibly you mentioned it, but I may have missed) but didn’t you edit the rulebook? If so, congrats!!! It’s very well done. Nothing sinks a game quicker than an awful rule book.
It is a little sad that map tiles are not so important in this game. The last one was not discovered at all. There are no differences between tiles there are no extra fields giving you more resources there are no places where everyone would like to settle it makes this game a little too static. I expect when no wikings we would see only few battles mainly with barbarians.
Scale of fighting really depends on the civilizations, for example Aztec need to fight others to get the most value off their civ, Huns are pretty aggressive and aren't the kinds to turtle and build

No solo mode for this game.
I think when Ragnar invaded Egipt, he shoud not replace yellow obelisk... Obelisk always will belongs to the one who build it, right?

I have a question
ADVANCE --> EDUCATION--> FREE EDUCATION
This is a free action or as an action ??
Increasing the happiness of a city only works for that city not all your cities.
When you choose that action, you can spend tokens to increase the happiness of multiple cities
I was already afraid that we will have to home-rule start with happy city again :D
For those who have played this, how is it at 2 players?
I've played it once at 2 players, and enoyed it. It feels quite different have only one target and or agressor to worry about, but still plenty fun.
Now maybe I’m wrong (and possibly you mentioned it, but I may have missed) but didn’t you edit the rulebook? If so, congrats!!! It’s very well done. Nothing sinks a game quicker than an awful rule book.

This play through guranteed this is on my buy list #blamepaul. I also assume that city building in the mountain offers no military advantage?
Terrain effects should be for cities and units. You would think attacking units or cities in mountains would give a -1 drm at least.

Really? The battle resolve by a dice? Its not 1957 anymore (first Risk game)... Othervies its seems to be a really good game, but dices? :(
How else would you resolve a battle. Cards?
Ever heard of such outdated games as SW:Rebellion (2016), Twilight Imperium 4 (2017) or War for the Ring (2011)?
