I think in many cases a beginner almost has to copy somewhat in order to master specific techniques but your method of teaching always provides several options and teaching students to see possibilities in nature, architecture and culture.

I copy something because I love what it says to my soul. Its for me. Not to sale to the world. I also appreciate a teacher who understands and is flattered❤

I thank you so very much for being a teacher to me and am so glad you have come back to teach some more. You inspire me and if there is any copying it is because of something you have sewn and even though I do not "copy" what you make, I copy your patient and fluid examples of hand stitching. I have been working to free my thinking as my yearly goal. I wrote you and told you at 69 I am locked in sometimes with freeing up my creativeness and I so want to free myself from that box I am in. You, with your patience and calm way of creating, has inspired me to wade into my fabrics and string and let them show me some pathway to free my sewing soul! I am humbly grateful to you.

I feel no one can/could really copy you. 😉If I stitch something I learned from you I always reference you. You are one of the greats and I’m so honored to have learned all I have from you. If I see something similar to yours I always look for a mention of you. Love to you always❤️

Good topic ... many artists copy the old masters in order to learn. Ultimately in the best case, imitation leads to innovation. But, you are right that you have to learn from somewhere to get started. I realized copying let me learn more about myself and what I like even it's only the color pallets that I prefer, but I know when I start working that my own voice will eventually surface and my project will become my own. Anything less is not authentic or satisfying. And, please feel flattered!

Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher. I have learned much watching your work. I am not a copier (ever) but your techniques are superb. I am presently trying my hand at hoop-free embroidery

Do you have videos on how you dye fabric? All I can think to do is spray a confined area with bleach to make the white in a field of blue, rinse it out and let it dry. I would love videos on that topic.

I use a clamped resist shibori method with indigo dye. I do not have any videos at this time, I do not teach dyeing. But my friend Glennis ( I learned from her) has some videos in her sidebar...shiborigirl.wordpress.com/

Not all my videos are public on here. And I haven't really organized this channel yet. You can find out how to access Whispering Hearts through my websote under free classes.

Thank you for addressing your view on copying. I have to say I have learned a lot from following your videos, but I always try to keep my own voice in my work. When I see another persons work that looks like yours, it first makes me mad….because it does look like stealing…. There is only one Jude. People…find your path, and let Jude’s work be a guide, not a template.

It is a very conflicting issue as a teacher but dialog helps...
