Could you do a little test to see what temperature is required to activate the black? I don't think it's been done before but I'm thinking if you pressed the thermal paper against a hot plate it would go black except where the ridges of your fingerprints are, could be a simple way to get a high contrast fingerprint image?

That's a very interesting question. I do have a small hotplate for reflowing, so will give it a go and upload my findings. Thanks!
