[Verse 1] All my life, I ain't ever been a lucky man Saw the back of my daddy's hand Lost your mama to the promised land In my time, I ain't ever had a thing that's mine 'Til they handed me a baby fine My little girl [Pre-Chorus 1] There are only two things I know I get ugly when the whiskey flows Wanted you to know I love you so And I would kill before I let you go [Chorus] Taking off for Mississippi Wearing someone else's name Brought you in this world and I Can take you from it just the same If you leave for Mississippi I will beat you at your game Brought you in this world and I Can take you from it just the same [Verse 2] My dear one Heard you're whispering your plans to run Off to marry some rich man's son I bet he's never met a poor man's gun [Pre-Chorus 2] In the darkness you could not see The drunken devil instructing me Two bullets in a crimson sea Now I'm certain that you'll never be [Chorus] Taking off for Mississippi Wearing someone else's name Brought you in this world and I Can take you from it just the same If you leave for Mississippi I will beat you at your game Brought you in this world and I Can take you from it just the same [Verse 3] Grief and sin When the righteousness of you sets in And the blood in my veins begins to ramble on Now I know we can stand and judge the execution man But we all have to make a trembling stand before the sun [Outro] Maple tree Can your branches carry me? Before the war, before the wine Before I stole what wasn't mine Can you bring my baby back to me?
Strong song story line arranged carefully -harmony tight with memorable phrasing excellent musicianship Modern Appalachian style Very rare degree of quality not seen since the McGarrigles
This is one of my most favorite songs of all time. I live half way across the globe, but somehow this songs carries me not only though space, but time as well. Whenever and wherever i listen to it, i instantly get transferred to 1960s American South.
Persacly said. This is real and not "Bubble Gum" music as I call modern pop , bop , country. A cowboy hat and an exaggerated twang voice is not real music.
I saw them in concert at the Cumberland Caverns, probably the best concert ever. I was able to talk to them after the concert, they are so very humble and amazing. Best group since the Civil Wars came along.
I saw these amazing women in St. Louis and they were the first opening act to Brandie Carlile and I was blown away! I could of listened to them all night.
I loved this song from the moment I heard it. It was only later when I had fully devoured their discography that I learned it was the second song of a story. The two songs put together make one of the best stories I've heard told in a song in quite awhile.
I am completely convinced that this is the father’s side of the Iuka story. In Iuka, the story was about two lovers trying to marry (in Iuka, so that is a loophole maybe because in this song, they’re trying to LEAVE Mississippi). Everything else fits though. The two lovers, the abusive, controlling, murderous father, noose in the maple tree...just saying. Go listen to their song Iuka.
I think almost everybody who watched the volga restoration video, tried to find this song and the slow farawell song, like i did. i m 37 and now i try to find out how could i live without black country. this song is epic
I'm going to move to Russia and restore old Soviet cars while jamming out to retro-sounding Blues. In all seriousness, that was a cool video. They did a beautiful job restoring that car. Their choice of music is very interesting and I really enjoyed it.
something aligned just right for you to hear this song in that kind of zone just thinking about, I get an even stronger felling of how it should be heard … todays radio is often times to clean sounding for my liking, particular stuff from the 50s to the mid 80s sounds better with a bit of static
suggestion second or last verse should not read: Brought you in this world and I can take you from it just the same . Rather; Brought you in this world and I HAVE TOOK you from the same The're still young girls though.
I am a 31 year old metalcore guy but this song gives me goosebumps and I feel like crying. This definitely is a Masterpiece
me 46 year's old favourite band probably panteara 🤘 and I have goosebumps all over
You have pretty good taste for a metal core fan XD
Listen to Iuka from the precious album THEN this. Double goosebumps.
@@Twykye thnx
I had the pleasure of seeing them live and WOW. I recommend Bad Habit as well as everything they’re ever made 😅
‘Rich man’s son, bet he never met a poor man’s gun’ is one of hardest verses I’ve ever heard in a song
[Verse 1]
All my life, I ain't ever been a lucky man
Saw the back of my daddy's hand
Lost your mama to the promised land
In my time, I ain't ever had a thing that's mine
'Til they handed me a baby fine
My little girl
[Pre-Chorus 1]
There are only two things I know
I get ugly when the whiskey flows
Wanted you to know I love you so
And I would kill before I let you go
[Chorus]
Taking off for Mississippi
Wearing someone else's name
Brought you in this world and I
Can take you from it just the same
If you leave for Mississippi
I will beat you at your game
Brought you in this world and I
Can take you from it just the same
[Verse 2]
My dear one
Heard you're whispering your plans to run
Off to marry some rich man's son
I bet he's never met a poor man's gun
[Pre-Chorus 2]
In the darkness you could not see
The drunken devil instructing me
Two bullets in a crimson sea
Now I'm certain that you'll never be
[Chorus]
Taking off for Mississippi
Wearing someone else's name
Brought you in this world and I
Can take you from it just the same
If you leave for Mississippi
I will beat you at your game
Brought you in this world and I
Can take you from it just the same
[Verse 3]
Grief and sin
When the righteousness of you sets in
And the blood in my veins begins to ramble on
Now I know we can stand and judge the execution man
But we all have to make a trembling stand before the sun
[Outro]
Maple tree
Can your branches carry me?
Before the war, before the wine
Before I stole what wasn't mine
Can you bring my baby back to me?
🖤
Think the lines is, "But we all have to make a trembling stand before the SON". Referring the the Son of God and judgement day.

Their ability to harmonise reminds me of the Louvin brothers too.

One does not simply keep The Secret Sisters a secret...
found the LOTR fan
They are such great story tellers, something that is sorely lacking in the rest of music these days.

i heavily disg=agree with you cindy. re-evaluate
Saw someone recommend this song on tumblr a few months ago. Wish I could remember who it was because this song is great
This song is pure magic! The lyrics, the harmony, so authentic...it is a favorite of mine!!❤
I saw them in concert at the Cumberland Caverns, probably the best concert ever. I was able to talk to them after the concert, they are so very humble and amazing. Best group since the Civil Wars came along.
These gals can really write ... captivating melodies too
I love listening stories through songs and this one is so well-written.
Какие же Вы молодцы, не знаю как переведет это google. но ваша музыка творит чудеса.....
Possibly my favorite on the new album, but the whole thing is stunning. The production by Brandi Carlile is outstanding.

Not as good as Bob Dylan's Mississippi... but what is?
Pointless comparison. Not the same song.
Or Nina Simone's!
