you can also do the trinket that sets everything to the highest attack with that one elemental hero that doubles the attack of your left most minion which is pretty sick.

why not scale an atrocity and then just play a bunch of cultists?

Though any cultist comp is more countered by bramblewitch so that's always a consideration.
Like if the reborn dragon gets brambled you lose 1 very good unit.
If the atrocity gets brambled you lose it and your cultist basically become 3 12 with medicore summons whereas you could have played good utility units instead.
It's a niche case so maybe it doesn't matter but worth thinking about
