Love the podcast and I agree about a lot I think 2024 has pretty much been a straight upgrade I will say that moving all the subclasses to level 3 is a thing I disagree with as it made levels 1 and 2 which a lot of people already don't like playing at even less appealing like I've talked to a lot of people lately and when talking about starting a campaign people just don't even consider starting at level 1 because it feels bad
That is very fair - there's so many things in D&D that are subjective and the low levels are definitely included in that. Our group used to be the same but we just expedite the levels, so we get to have the joy of progression and gaining a subclass, but over a shorter period of time and then it evens out going into 4+
Wanted to say that the Scions of Elemental Evil from DND beyond is out and they show some updated monsters that's to be used. So if you wanted to check some monsters out before the monster manual there is that. From what I've seen though it looks like a lot of fun with the changes that they've made to some of the monsers/enemies!
This was so good to watch/listen to, felt like a stream does! I was apprehensive about DnD2024 after they rolled back the warlock changes, but everything else has come out a net positive for me. We've already swapped our group over, hopefully we get to transition our base into a bastion (DM willing ofc), and im excited to see what else comes from future books. The only thing that leaves a bit of a bitter taste is the exclusion of Artificer, and a whole bunch of subclasses, even though i know theyll undoubtedly be coming in future books/products
Completely agreed with Artificer and some of the Subclasses. Hopefully in expansions (akin to Tasha's etc) they'll bring them in or even some new ones! Glad you enjoyed the vid 🥺
I finally saved up enough tips to buy the new PHB! I'm so excited to see all the changes myself! My main worries were some of my subclasses I LOVE, disappearing completely and certain races being blipped out of canon existence. There are some races I live and die by and I worry that if I'm ever able to get into a game finally, the race I wanna play wont be allowed because it's not in the new PHB. I guess that group probably just wouldn't be the right fit but still it's a fear in my brain none the less. I loved your guys' commentary on the new PHB it really helped calm some of my fears. I hope you guys do one for the MM or the DMG :3!
Being haunted by eels reminds me of how I saw a picture of the monster smut section at barnes and noble on twitter and sent it to my friends because there's a book called "I'm in Love with Mothman" which we all found funny... This was back in July and I've been haunted by Mothman for months now T.T Was Mothman here all along and I just never noticed him? xD
Big fan!! As a bard main I was really intrigued to hear about your thoughts on the Bardic Inspiration as a reaction! I feel nearly the opposite about it, that the Bardic feels more valuable as a Bonus Action, and frees up a lot of play with reactions -- that all depending on what sort of reaction based spells / abilities you've stacked your Bard with. For example I play a high level bard who is stacked with Counterspell *and* Silvery Barbs, and I'm aware there is a Bard college that has Cutting Words as a reaction thing too. I don't think there's enough valuable Bonus Action spells for bards that make the reaction spell sacrifice worth it! Though I do see how epic it could be in those clutch moments where another PC might *just* miss a DC, so having that reaction to throw a bardic on top ... would be kinda slayyyy. Just my humble two cents I wanted to throw in because I found your discussion in the video really interesting (plus I want to help fight the algorithm beast hahaha) (love ya'lls stuff!)
Interesting video today. I've been apprehensive about the new addition and its good to hear that there is so much to look forward too. I might run a one-shot with the new rules to give it a shot.
So my impression is mixed. Therew a lot of good, changes to warlock are great. hexblade was too good. Running it feels about the same. When I ran it, we found that the weapon masteries could clutter combat up a bit. I'm still making an overall decision though
So I am torn by DnD 2024, some things they have done really well, but the issues are so glaring that I think I will be finding a new system in 2025. The strong improvements to some of the classes and sub classes are good, monk, warlock, wizard and sorcerer are all strong, fighter and barbarian have also had good improvements. But Ranger is still massively under appreciated in the rules. I also dislike that they didn’t come up with mechanics for half species, how do I build my half Dragonborn half orc character? I also don’t like the changes to backgrounds. Don’t get me wrong I am all for asi and skills etc being part of them but there is no flavour, no “you know 2 criminal contacts, or “you have a second identity you can take on”. They are just all the same except for which stats they give you (and even that becomes irrelevant with the DMG having rules for customizing backgrounds). Finally they can so close with the DMG, but the shot for the moon and missed. Session zero stuff is ok, but it isn’t groundbreaking, they out a bit more emphasis on partial success and failure but I wish they had made this a cornerstone of the new rules. Really lean into that as a standard mechanic rather than as an optional and have real examples how to apply it. Generally the DMG needs more examples of how to RP out of combat stuff. The changes to the rules have meant so much into combat that no class now has exploratory or social abilities to help them, it is all based on your ASIs and skills. DnD has become even more a combat simulator and pulled away even more from the RP. Which is fine. But don’t go talking about the 3 pillars of your rules are going to to focus on just 1.
I started playing TTRPGs in the Y2K with AD&D2e (3.0 had just been released, though not in my native language yet). I do think that 5e is the best iteration of D&D by far, but of course it's not perfect. My major grievances are 1) it's too hard to run a Sword & Sorcery campaign (my favorite flavor of medieval fantasy) because player characters are more powerful than ever and 2) I REALLY don't like the art direction they have now. The art itself is high quality, but it's not medieval fantasy to me. If we could have art in the style of Larry Elmore's or Jeff Easley's again, only with way more diversity/inclusivity, that would perfect IMO. But with all that said, I decided not to support D&D anymore because of WotC/Hasbro continuous bullshit. I'm preparing to run a Tales of the Valiant campaign where my 10-year-old will be playing a TTRPG for the very first time and I'm stealing a few rules from the 2024 PHB, but I definitely don't see myself playing D&D anymore, at least not while Hasbro has its filthy paws on it.
It's nice to see they made some positive changes. But I'm sticking with 5e and adding third party stuff and Tales of the Valiant instead of buying anything for One DnD. But that's just me and my group.
THAT'S MY BABY!! @ 12:00
