    I've noticed exceptional improvments to my Starlink service over the last few months. I mounted my Dishy on my roof but not matter where I moved it I always had a couple of red spots on the Starlink virtual visibility map. Ever since I've owned it, coming up on a year soon I think.. I've always had obstructions no matter where I put my Dishy. But the last few months I went from "Obstruction" every 7 minutes to 12 minutes to 17 minutes and now I have zero obstructions and Starlink never goes down at all anymore. Compared to before when it went down for a few seconds at a time multiple times an hour.
    Also speeds have drasticly increased. I could expect 70-90mbs with a 60-70 ping most days. Sometimes I'd get a nice speedtest and it would break 100mbs. But now I see reliable speeds of ~200mbs with 40-50 ping. I'm super stoaked because all these improvments have happened over the last 4 months or so. So pumped to see where Starlink will go from here.

      I set-up my dishy on my roof this weekend, with a similar similar level of obstruction (lower fringe of viewing field). I hope to see similar improvements you described, soon. Love your podcast, too. 👍

    Going to need ground stations for those who are not using Starlink, which will include most if not all servers. But if the laser links/mesh links are good enough then the ground station that is closest to the server would be the only one needed. Super fast if it works that way.
    I can't really think of many situations where you are hitting a web site that is on another starlink terminal like you mentioned. So in theory if you are hitting from your starlink terminal to someone else's starlink terminal then fine. No ground station needed. But if you are hitting any business server on the ground that is not starlink (which is most) then you are going to hit a ground station at some point.
    Take for instance, your bank. You want to hit your bank's server then you are going to have to come to a ground station because I'll bet you a dollar that your bank doesn't have a starlink dishy on top of it's server clusters.

    • @Jaker788
      @Jaker788 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only scenarios I see where you could stay within the Starlink network is peer to peer stuff, even then some peer to peer apps have you communicate with a server for a few things.
      But Google is interested in hosting ground stations, you could make a connection through the Starlink network and end right into a Google data center for all Google services. Just need Netflix on board too, they have a bunch of racks inside ISP networks for good speed.

    I have always wondered why they don't use RF interlinks, getting those lasers aligned is a lot harder that an RF signal.. is there some rule stopping this?

    • @Jaker788
      @Jaker788 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably many reasons we don't know. It is amazing they can aim a laser from a moving satellite to another moving satellite.
      Maybe radio is too bulky for weight reasons, probably draws a lot more power since it's a much broader signal even with phased array.
      With higher power requirements due to the scattered nature of radio, bandwidth is probably lower. They can only gather so much power from the solar panels.
      Communicating with a specific satellite from multiple angles would require many antennas increasing weight further, lasers probably don't add much weight comparatively.
      Maybe there would be too much radio noise with all the satellites throwing radio waves around. They only have so many bands licenced to them, could interfere with their network and others or just not allowed at all on that scale. Yes you could use a type of CDMA or GSM protocol, but I imagine it's just too much to have 17,000 satellites broadcasting radio every which way, it's exponential in how many connections you can make.

  • @alanmay7929
    @alanmay7929 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They will unfortunately still need ground stations because internet is the infrastructure, the datas are in data centers and servers on the ground, same with consumers and companies.

    • @marzsit9833
      @marzsit9833 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      very true because each ground station antenna can have only so much bandwidth and ability to handle a maximum number of connections, ground stations not only will be needed but they will still need to establish more of them as the system grows. and in certain places like islands in the middle of the oceans the ground stations will need to be larger than the ones on the coasts of the major land masses.

    A friend of mine was a beta tester for Starlink and has been pretty disappointed. He told me if the slightest bit of dust or pollen collects on the dish or if a bird or squirrel is nearby the reception evaporates rapidly. I was once psyched to sign up but I think I'll hold off for now.

    • @Jaker788
      @Jaker788 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. People have had heavy snow fall and not lost a connection, often not even losing speed. Rain doesn't affect it, thick clouds don't effect it.
      Birds and pollen are not likely to block the signal

    • @MiguelRuiz-vp1hu
      @MiguelRuiz-vp1hu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try putting plastic pvc, abs or Teflon sheet on top of it. It’s invisible to RF and can be used to protect the dish from accumulated debris if you angle the sheet so it slides off. Also, I don’t think pollen would make much of an impact, but I don’t have it so that’s only speculation.

    • @Jaker788
      @Jaker788 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are for all future launches, gen 2 with laser communication will be replacing gen 1. This is why we haven't had any Starlink launches for a couple months for any orbit, they needed to ramp up production of gen 2.
      The focused on Alaska because it's required bro operate there, and the first 2 launches there were for testing.

    • @Jaker788

      Not a requirement necessarily. As long as the satellite you're connected to can see a ground station too it works. The places it won't work without a laser interconnect is over the ocean and remote places like northern Alaska, Antarctica, and the like.
      So all over Washington or Utah you should be able to drive around and have connectivity, however you're geolocked into a cell coverage area determined by your service address. And a different terminal may be required to handle fast speeds 🤷

    You all know the real goal is to chip and track every human being don't you? It will start like this. Chip your pet and locate it anywhere in the world with your cell phone. We promise not to sell or share the tracked info with any one except our partners but we don't control what they do with it so you will have to speak with them. Hay that was a good idea, how about your kids? Well if you care about them too, you will also chip them. And how about this one, if you want out of jail you will need to be chipped. Well now we are going to mandate it for everyone because it's best for the country and it is constitutional because we checked with the supreme court judges we packed in the court.
    I am getting up in age and may not see the whole thing come to fruition but if the younger people don't start understanding that the water is about to boil then they will loose the one greatest thing they have on this earth. Their freedom. The ability to regain it will be nearly impossible.

    When Elon first said his speed of latency that they we shooting for I figured what he had stated was much slower than what they will actually be able to provide once the system is up and running with more optimized technology👍

    • @Urgelt
      @Urgelt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on where user receivers are. Latency will rise for packets relayed from satellite to satellite, which they will do for remote areas lacking ground stations, such as ocean-going vessels, airplanes on over-ocean routes, science stations in Antarctica, etc.
      Ground stations are important for low latencies. But *any* service is better than *no* service. Just being able to obtain high bandwidth internet in remote locations is a huge plus.

      @@Urgelt I think light travels 40% faster in space compared to fiber. Possibly the lowest latency for long range packets. Guess time will tell, but it could be a huge feature of Starlink.

    • @Urgelt
      @Urgelt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mcarpenter2917 Each hop requires processing time. Processing in silicon is *way* slower than the speed of light in either a vacuum or in an optical fiber cable. For a Starlink satellite, it *also* has to realign an antenna each time it delivers a packet to the ground.
      If you have to add satellite-to-satellite hops, you'll get more latency. Take an ocean-going ship in the middle of the Pacific - if the nearest ground station where routing wants the packet to go is 6 satellite hops away, *there* is your extra latency.
      But we wouldn't compare that latency to fiber, 'cause there isn't any fiber out there in the Pacific, except in a very few places (islands) on intercontinental cable runs. And those will probably be Starlink's interconnection points for packet routing. SpaceX won't want to route all the way around the Earth from satellite to satellite; its goal will be to get rid of each packet as soon as is practicable. Why? Satellite-to-satellite hops eat up bandwidth, which SpaceX will wish to preserve for more packets. Think of a packet as a hot potato. Pick up a packet from a ground station, the goal is to get it into the terrestrial network as quickly as possible.
      Don't sleep on the fact that Starlink can't compete directly on price with terrestrial networks - except where those networks don't reach. It's more expensive to provide bandwidth from space. So efficient utilization of available bandwidth is important for Starlink.
      It's not really about how fast light travels in a near-vacuum versus how fast it travels in optical fiber. It's about hops. Fewer hops means lower latency and better utilization of the Starlink network.

    • @mcarpenter2917
      @mcarpenter2917 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Urgelt All very reasonable and a good description of current networks, but we really don't know what's possible. The plan is to have 40k satellites. That is a lot of satellites.

    • @Urgelt
      @Urgelt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mcarpenter2917 The sheer number of satellites will influence *some* performance parameters.
      But assuming that available bandwidth hasn't been saturated (which, for Starlink, as a mesh network, is a *local* phenomenon), the number of satellites won't constrain or unconstrain latency. How far a packet must travel, and how many hops it must go through, will still be the latency drivers.
      Most of the time, Starlink's latency will be quite good. But the cost per hop is going to be higher for Starlink than for terrestrial networks. So serving as a rival for terrestrial backbones won't work for Starlink. The value of the network will come from operating where terrestrial networks can't go.
      And that is what SpaceX has said from the beginning about Starlink.
