    What I like about this song is the driving bass line throughout (what grabbed me first listen) and, seeing their live performances, that Animal maniac on the drums (he alone is worth the watch).

    The perceived layering on vocals is probably the bassist Nikki on backing vocals.

    I'm a huge Silversun Pickups fan, but I totally understand all of your criticisms for this song. It is one of their more repetitive songs, yet easily one of the most radio friendly which is why it's so popular. I'd recommend something like "Kissing Families", "Dream At Tempo 119", "Rusted Wheel", or for something a little more recent "Freakazoid" which is from their new album they just released in June. PS: the bassist for the band is a woman and does a lot of backup vocals so you weren't totally wrong about hearing a girl in this song, even though most people just assume Brian is a girl. Thanks for the video guys, keep it up!

    This is a 3 for me, I love hearing this song coming on in the car when I'm driving around.
    1. The Mars Volta - The Widow (prog rock)
    2. Steam Powered Giraffe - Automatonic Electronics Harmonics (steam punk musical comedy)
    3. Mandroid Echostar - The Sleeping (prog metal, Coheed and Cambria type vocalist)
    4. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Wet Sand (you already knows)
    5. Thomas Giles - Sleep Shake (solo project from vocalist of Between the Buried and Me)
    6. Closure In Moscow - Seeds Of Gold (prog rock)
    7. Arch Echo - Color Wheel (instrumental prog? a wow band like polyphia)
    8. Weezer - The Greastest Man That Ever Lived (a theme song for both of you :D)
    9. Death Cab For Cutie - Soul Meets Body (alt rock)
    10. JUSTICE - Fire (electronic music duo)

    Thanks for exposing me to more Silversun PIckups. Lazy Eye was the standout song on Rockband 2 when my son and I were playing that a lot. Loved playing fake drums to that song. "Locked and loaded!!!!" I thought it was a girl too until I saw the video. This wasn't Lazy Eye, but I liked it fine. Enjoy that raw bassline even if it wasn't so complex.

    I like it. Gives me an 80's underground /bar band vibe. The music also reminds me a bit of Jesus and Mary Chain.
    They've got nothing on Steely Dan though, c'mon. Mark my words, one day, Manny will come to appreciate Steely Dan. Musical tastes definitely evolve.
    Here's a song for Manny to break out of the slump: Genesis - Dance on a Volcano. (I know it's another Genesis song, but it seriously kicks ass.)

    Their latest album is actually really solid. Straw Man is the big winner on that one for me, and I think the fact that it's shorter and more musically interesting might mean you'd really enjoy it.

    Do It Again is WAY more interesting than this, by far. The Dan is much more melodically complex, and I agree this one is more shallow. Do It Again is driven by its repetitiveness, the song DOES IT AGAIN. And it grooves so hard. ... This song wasn't bad (maybe a 2.5) and I would seek it more of their music.

  • @JeromeDukes
    @JeromeDukes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I really liked this song. I though it was girl singing the song as well. The bass line was cool and I liked the vocals and drumming. I also like the heaviness of the song, caters more to my taste in music. For me I give the song a 3.8.
    "Do it Again" vs this song. The Steely Dan song is cool, it starts with a Latin groove that sets the mood of the song. As a person who has interest in musicians and learning from them, I would say Steely Dan was more interesting and I would get more out of "Do it Again" vs this song. However, my tastes in music leans towards having an edge and or awesome melodies. I prefer this song more to Steely Dan, just because of the heaviness, cool drumming and bass. So if the song is more about just listening and chilling this song would interest me more. As Manny would say, "turn off the brain and just listen".
    I have a question for Manny. I've seen you on these reaction videos say "hey that's cool". Have you every followed up to see how the musician played that sequence? Like a learning moment for the guitar as an example. To me this is the value of a band like Steely Dan, there's always little treasures in a song, that would peak my interest.

    Took me a long time to get into this song but it's awesome. I get why you might not like it on first listen since I didn't either. Also I think everyone thinks it's a girl singing at first. They do have a female bass player who also sings backups which makes the overall vocals sound more feminine. But the dude's an awesome singer

    How to Get Sharpie Off Whiteboard
    The best way to remove Sharpie from a dry erase board is with a dry erase marker.
    Simply scribble over the permanent marker with whatever whiteboard marker have on hand.
    Wait 5 to 10 minutes and then use your whiteboard eraser or clean rag to wipe it.

    I really liked this song. I'm a sucker for a bass line chugging along with multiple melodic changes. Structure was somewhat basic, but overall, very pleasant. 3.5 Steely Dan's song "Do It Again" is more interesting. But I like the structure of this song. The guitar could've been more interesting.

    Love this band, but never a huge fan of this song despite its popularity. I really like his guitar tone with loads of fuzz and reverb and even his voice. Justin, I’d be amazed if you haven’t heard Lazy Eye. It’s a pretty huge song. In my little cover band we covered that song a few times and also covered “well thought out twinkles”, which is a cool guitar song. Believe it or not, there music is super fun to play on guitar and I appreciate the overall instrumental dynamic the 3 of them have. This song is like a 2-5-3 for me as a pretty big fan that has seen them live and listened to them quite a bit.

    Panic Switch is better in every way compared to Do It Again. The music goes a lot more places than Do It Again, which is definitely more shallow musically. It's just a normal song for chilling. The meat of the instrumental is just on a constant loop, with a couple segments of messing around with an instrument.
    The instrumentals on Panic Switch hype me up (love, love, love the drums on the loud, droning guitar during the chorus) and the vocals add so incredibly much compared to Do It Again.

    I'll say this as someone who has seen Silversun Pickups in concert...they're more of a live band than the type of band you'd sit back in a quiet room and listen to. They're not that complex, mixing in some mid 00's indie rock sound with some shoegaze in how they wield the guitars on some tracks and in the mixing. But live, they've got a great energy, and that elevates their music IMO
    Panic Switch is probably not their best song to sit down and listen to (I give it about a 2.5). They're not a band I listen to a lot, it's hard to say what I'd recommend as an entry point outside of a live venue...maybe Seasick, or Simmer? Perhaps Dots and Dashes? They're never going to be a go-to band for songs that offer a ton of variety, but they are a little better than Panic Switch IMO
    I do like Steely Dan's "Do It Again" better, but not by that much, because the vocals just...drag it down a fair bit.

    • @jpmp1201
      @jpmp1201  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m finding out that I’m more into aesthetics than musicality. I personally like the mood of this song and would rate it a 4. Musically, it's not interesting, so I’d rate that a 1. Since mood is more important to me as a listener, my overall score would be a 3. Do it Again is the same. I love the mood but get bored with the music so I rate that a 3 as well. If I hear a song with great musicianship but has an aesthetic that I don't care for, I rate it lower than songs like these. Finding music that combines the two... that's a 5 for me.
    ...7 hours later... I've had a chance to listen to Do it Again again. I think it's a better song and I think the musicianship is better, but I don't enjoy it anymore than Panic Switch. I guess I have a third category that I rate music on and that is intangibles, the aspects that I can't describe. I should like Do it Again more than I do, but I don't. I should like Panic Switch less than I do, but I don't. Oh, well, does it even matter?

    • @jpmp1201
      @jpmp1201  5 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @Brax1982

    Guys...I just had sort of a fight about the music snob attitude and now here you are displaying that to some degree. Don't get into the "this is better than that" stuff. Especially not with such different genres.
    This is fine. Like the vocals on this song, but I'm pretty sure I didn't like them, in general. Listened to more of their stuff a long time ago. This voice can be grating after a while and their songs are probably not like this, in general.
    If we want to get into the "x better than y" thing...I like this more than you. I think it's better than Aja. I don't think it's better than Do It Again. And saying that, "better" certainly doesn't mean the musicality. I would be a fool to say that Aja isn't objectively light-years better in composition, arrangement, technicality and whatnot. To me, "better" can only mean "I like it more". Because I know shit about music theory and songwriting.
