Never ever buy packaged Biltong, that’s blasphemy. 😂You buy Biltong from a butchery, and it must come in a brown paper bag. That packaged stuff is nasty…🤢
Lol oooh yes
Facts! And if you like spicy, get some Chilli slices too
😂😂 okay we will have to go check that out
Facts
And get plain wet and fat biltong , then get dry flavored biltong
🎉 THANKS FOR TRYING OUT RSA SNACKS. HOWEVER THIS IS NOT OUR BEST SELECTION OF SNACKS.. BUT MUCH APPRECIATED 👍🤞💯🇿🇦
Please let us know what to try and we will do a part 2.
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFE droewors
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFE
I've put a lot of thought into my recommendations. Instead of ranking them, I'll give you categories & rank that way.
1. Chips
- Green(chutney) Nik Naks
- Sweet Chilli Frittos
- Pink Stylos
2. Biscuits
- Cape Cookies Romeo Delights (I've never tasted cookies more delicious in much life!! Trust me on this! If you can't find them, then Romany Creams are also nice)
- eat-sum-mor biscuits
-
3. Chocolates
- 5 star
- Lunchbar
- Nikki
4. Drinks
- Kingsley cranberry soda
- Amarula
- Red Grapetizer
5. General
- Diddle Daddle caramel corn
- Pink Fizzer
- Malva Pudding (topped with custard) (must be warm)
Milk Tart
Caramel corn hits hard
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFE please try PS, Lunch Bar Cheese curls, Tex, smarties, rusks (dip them in coffee or tea), fizzer,
Glad to see you immersed in getting to know South Africa. Just a little something for your next snack ❤️🇿🇦
Thank you so much we really appreciate that!! Be blessed.
Bless your heart I wish I can have that too 😢🙈
Ubagaya iclippa vele😮
Haibo nidlala nge mali
You have to try Ouma Buttermilk Rusks. DIP IT IN WARM COFFEE OR TEA (just a small piece at a time) until softened and then eat it like cookies. Ultimate winter comfort snack.
Cheese Niknaks. Cadbury Milk Chocolate. Dipped Flake. Peppermint Crisp.
Oh boy. Shaking my head on the biltong and snapstix selection.
Please buy fresh biltong (the type that gets weighed). Beige pieces stuck on surface is probably coarse coriander.
You have very 'spicy' pallets.
I think you will enjoy Simba Ghost Pops and Doritos.
For us Simba chips is not bland at all. Too much seasoning will turn most of these flavours into very unhealthy snacks. We have cheap chips brands that are so full of colourants and 'seasonings', that the children walk around with stained tongues. Those are very flavourful of course and extremely unhealthy.
Also, please try milk tart, the type that has cinnamon sprinkled on top, and the baked type as well.
Enjoy.
Thanks for the recommendations
Loved this comment
Lol you need South Africans to buy stuff for yourl..that BOS ice tea we South Africans dont mess with that ... rather tropica pinapple or orange or liqui fruit
Exactly I was wondering who drinks BOS in SA, if we want ice tea we usually go for the regular Lipton 🤷🏾♀️🤦🏽♀️
@@katlegochiloane3148 exactly this!!
Good to know
@@katlegochiloane3148 Manhattan ice tea by Clover, is the best
The best biltong comes in a brown paper bag, sold in a small town that has one filling station which closes at 8pm
Wolmaransstad
Good to know
Preach.
Just a Disclaimer: If you tell any South African that knows what Jerky is as well that Biltong is the same as beef jerky they might just fight you🤣. The process is very different in making the 2 and quality biltong is by far better than Jerky (in my biased South African opinion😁). Regardless though great video and thanks for trying our snacks!
But yeah go to a nice butcher and ask for "Geelvet Biltong" that is still slightly wet (or it can be bone dry that is all preference). And also ask for Droëwors and chili-bites. You can technically make a whole episode of the kinds of biltong and dried meat goodies we as South Africans produce.
I've had jerky, not a fan. Now proper biltong with a solid meat to fat ratio I'll eat any day!
Yeah Jerky honestly is horrible...no comparison to Biltong whatsoever😂😂
Thanks for watching
Yes, Jerky is disgusting and nothing like real SA biltong - properly made from a butchery or home made. Please do another video with some of the suggestions made here!
😂😂 has anyone drank the bos before?? First time seeing this 😂😂
😂😂😂
I was like what the 😂😂😂but now I also want to try it 😅
South african here, never had it😂
Really strange how you Americans call biscuits "cookies " and scones "biscuits ".
Bos is the best. Lipton ain't got ssh on it.
Been that side, I was so confused when I first heard that
😂😂😂
Guys guys guys! We have a much bigger and better selection of snacks and biscuits than what you have chosen . Biltong is best bought from a butcher and marie biscuits are like a waiting for pay day biscuit as in when waiting for the cheque to come in biscuits
Try romany creams, chocits, tennis biscuits, eet sum mor , . Haha i think we need to give you a list to try out
Thanks for the recommendations
DROEWORS!!!
Please try NikNaks chips, Ghostpops, Flings, Big Korn bites chips, Zoo Biscuits, Fizzers candy, Bar-one chocolate, milktart, koeksisters, Peppermint Crisp Chocolate, biltong and droewors from a butcher, Ouma rusks (to be dipped in coffee else you'll break teeth) and our Creme Soda -Enjoy! Would love to see a part 2 please 😀🙌
Thank you so much for the recommendations
Yes!!!
Couldn’t have said it better!! Yes try all of these too!
I second getting the biltong and droewors from a butcher. The taste is completely different from the mass-produced brands found at grocery stores.
@@ashleighletley9723 100% pretty much ANY grocery store but butchers have best stuff. If you like spicy try most Food Lovers have a flavor called babelas/hangover
Where are the chocolates? The cadbury 5star? The speckled eggs? Not too happy with your “SA snack choices” 😩😩
Maybe next time
When you are hungry you can take the smoked beef chips and put it in bread.... eish my favourite!
Fruiiitttt chutney allll the waayyyyy! 😂 chips on bread is so underrated! 🔥
Chronicles of .....
I've literally put all chips I've eaten on bread and butter at some point. Simba, crinklecut, ghost pops, cheese curls, Flings, all of it!
Simba chip sandwiches are lekker! Beef is best!
And on those luxury days.... cheddar cheese flavour with actual cheddar cheese 😋
Buying biltong from Pick n Pay and comparing it to jerky. 🤣🤣 No wonder. Thats just WRONG!!!
Check out our latest video we did a redo with some from a butcher. Thanks for watching.
Cool video. Please note that the tastes of some of our products may be mild compared to the US because we don’t usually use artificial sweeteners and GMO products.
Thanks for watching.
If you like toffee, get some Wilsons's toffee, available in diffe
Thanks for the recommendation
Try: Tennis biscuits and Cape cookies with milk( one of my favorite) , bar one, stony ginger beer and milo . There’s loads lol we love to eat. Thanks for the awsome vids guys really appreciate it !
Thanks for the recommendation
Stoney with extra kwetsa!
Here's a shopping list too redeem yourself:
Ask around, everyone in SA has their Best Butchers, which if budget permits, they'll buy at always.
When you're there:
* Ask for a selection of biltong. Not just dry/medium/wet... They differ in taste quite a bit.
* Droëwors. Plain. Nothing with the word 'stick' in it. Also if they've got a Thick version, grab a small piece. Some butchers have their special recipies. (Be sure to confirm pork content though.)
* If you're up for it, some(most?) have, what is often called a "babelas mix"... It's an amazing mix of all the odd-bits, in weighing packaging, with some extra spice.
Thanks for the recommendations
Two questions, 1. Did you dip a ouma? 2.if an African move to America, they become African Americans, what do you "become" if an African American move back to Africa? African-American-South African African American?? just went cross eyed..
I love dipping sexy oumas because they can't get pregnant
😆
If you are still in Johannesburg, get biltong and droe wors from Impala butchery.
Thanks for the recommendation
Buy biltong from butcheries, preferably “white-owned shops” 😅 they sell the best biltong. Also please try Speckled eggs, zoo-animal cookies, some SA fizzy drinks, and tennis biscuits. Also you should’ve went with wine gums instead of soft gums 😅 enjoyed this video alot but I’m not too happy with some of your ratings 😅❤
I agree with everything you said, but speckled eggs aren't it.
Thanks for the recommendations
Speckled eggs mmmm
Try a mutton bunny chow
Its mutton curry in loaf( no bunnies or rabbits are used or harmed 😂)
Its an Indian cuisine
😂😂😂😂
Part 2:
Niknacks
Smarties
Chomps
Some cadbury chocolates
Nuticrust
Romanycreams
Jelly tots
Pizzpops
Add some more people!
Wilson tofees
Ghost pops
Cream soda
Tennis biscuits
Ouma beskuit with rooibos tea(you need instructions for how to eat it though)
Thanks for the recommendations
@FREEDOM CHASERS put the Wilson toffees in your pocket, sit on it until the very end of the video. Your body heat will soften it enough to eat. Ps. Buttermilk and the black ones are the best
Smarties, Astros, Jelly tots mmmm
Where is the Romany Creams or Rusk you're missing out. It's great as a winter snack. 😊
Another fun fact we are serious about preventing diabetes in this country. If you check out the Coke Cola drink you'll see reduced sugar.
Yeah I think their expectations are based on American snacks and here we don’t over “flavourise” everything 😅
Even that reduced sugar isn't enough. I wish sugary drinks could be eliminated altogether. People are too reliant on them and diabetes is a terrible disease to have
@@tvs9978 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@katlegochiloane3148 True 👍🥰 We love flavour but we like subtle flavour. A chicken should still taste like a chicken 🍗 Our people created fusion food. Have a great life🫶
When eating condensed milk or buttermilk rusks (beskuit) for the first time, remember it's a dunking biscuit. Dunk it in hot coffee or milo.
If you think Marie Biscuits are good, you should try Eet Sum Mores. And yes there are definitely better biltong out there
Okay, where can we get those?
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFE Almost every supermarket in South Africa have Eet Sum mores
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFE Any grocery store will have it
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFEyes I agree, please get eet sum mors!
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFEyou can get it at any store really
Your input is really interesting, it indicates a lot about your home state and what you've had in other countries. I've had a few snacks from America but I'm now extremely curious and going to order online. Thank you for giving it all a fair go. I definitely agree with other commenters about getting biltong at a butcher, salted or spiced.
Thanks for watching
The beef flavored chips are best used as a filling on 2 slices of bread with real butter. Nice snack!
😂😂😂
No but for real!!!
True dat. The Notorious After School Sandwhich😂
I wont say anything about the biltong, my fellow South Africans(uncle Cyril's voice) said it already.
I just like how he's so excited. He really likes it here🤣
Mygirl on the other hand 😔. I dont know if she's under the weather coz there's a bug going around, but she just doesnt like ANY👏🏾THING👏🏾
We appreciate the video, it's always nice to see our everyday from the perspective of others.
Thanks for watching
SImba chip sandwiches!
😳😳
I love fritos or nik naks in mine.
Those Amajoja candies are quite hard and are meant for sucking on *in the strictest sense* lol. I used to love the liquorice flavoured ones ! 😂🤣😊 These days, I can only eat soft candies and snacks, because my teeth have become quite brittle over the years. Thank you for your video and taste testing South African snacks ! 👍
If you want the best Biltong you need to get it from a Butchery or a Biltong Deli
Maybe next time
Your girl is too harsh, she sounds like she got a cold maybe that's affecting her taste buds
I’ve noticed that too, on alot of the videos, I think she’s just a really picky eater or she has too high of expectations.
I thought it was me who notice. How can you take one piece of snack automatically you know tbe teste 😑
She definitely sounds a bit nasal. If you have a cold/sinusitis it's going to affect your sense of smell and taste.
Try Eatsumore biscuits, Romany cream biscuits, Lunchbar, some real droëwors and biltong bought and sliced at the butcher
She did mention in one video that she’s got allergies/Sinus issues. I stand to be corrected…
The Simba smoked beef chips with white bread and butter is a must try. Favorite lazy meal/snack to eat
Thanks for watching.
Simba chips are really good, but I do feel like it's usually hit or miss on whether you get a bag with the right amount of flavoring 😂
True, though they are somehow always on point with the Fruit Chutney😂
You have to try Ghost pops and Niknaks 😋
Thanks for the recommendation
Duuuude... gotta try jelly tots, peppermint crisp, milo, koeksisters, yellow fat biltong from butcher, Oros mix drink, safari dried fruit, steri stumpie drink, etc.
Thanks for the recommendations
I agree with the other comments: packaged biltong is terrible!!! I honestly don't know who buys it....
Good to know
Are you going to Cape Town? We live here, it's beautiful! MUCH different than Johannesburg 😊
Hopefully soon
you should try champion toffees (original flavour)
Thanks for the recommendation
Please buy some Cream Soda!
And also have a Crunchie and/or Peppermint Crisp.
Also, always buy biltong from butchers and try some dry wors from a butcher, too!
Really enjoy your videos😎
Thanks for the recommendations
Oh and please get a boerwors roll with tomato and onion relish! These are served on street corners and in some butcheries and grocery stores. It’s like a hot dog, but way better.
Thanks for the suggestion.
thank you definitely keeping me entertained and curious what you think of our country.
Thanks for watching
Guys, don't buy pre-packaged biltong!!😊 Go buy from the butcher.
Maybe next time
If you guys in Sandton, head to the Berliner Butchery and Grill. Grab some biltong from there. Also recommend getting some droewors from there as well.
Also don't shy away from game biltong, kudu is fantastic.
Thanks for the recommendation
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFE hope you enjoy!
Our chips used to have a LOT of seasonings throughout the years they had to tone it down (especially with the salt) for health reasons ❤
Well, health is a great reason to change.
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFE yes. With biltong go for the brown paper bag biltong... try malva pudding but freshly made... the pap has to be hot so it's not si stiff and with a bit of salt added ... try tennis biscuits as well.
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFE there are salt and sugar regulations in South African food. For sugary drinks you pay more ( at like McDonald's) if you didn't specify, you get sugar free
You need to eat more of the chips before scoring. 😂. Biltong must always be fresh! Come visit me, in KZN, I will show what the best snacks are!
Thanks for watching!
You need to try big korn bits and Gracie Pops chips
Love you guys! Thank you for exploring!! Let us know where you’re in Cape Town!! X
Hopefully soon
This guy is a South African in the heart😊
😂😂😂
Certain places sell a very very hot biltong
Most of it is called dynamite flavour
Well in Durban it's called dynamite
Sounds good
Woolworths Chuckles, I like the ones with toffee centre. Koeksisters if you like something very sweet. Cape Cookies. Pink Fizzers. NikNaks. The list goes on!
Thank you
Freedom chasers please go to a rugby match 😭and experience the family that is only created there 🔥even if you don't understand the rules of the sport. The vibe is infectious 🔥the people are friendly and the rivalry is crazy. I'm sure a big game is around the corner
Maybe soon
I really recommend that you guys go to a restaurant called Spur in Johannesburg, they sell great steaks and burgers. Please try it! PS. Their French fry dressing goes so good with the fries!
Nah. Spur quality aren't good anymore
Thanks for the recommendation
Next time Try a " Red cappuccino" a South African special
Loved this!
Next time you buy Biltong you must go to the butchery side and get fresh Biltong and Drywors!
We have great chocolates too! 🤭🤭
We will definitely have to try the chocolates
You should try Mrs Ball's Chutney...legendary local stuff...
Maybe soon
I love your channel..great videos its thee whole show for me
Thanks for watching
like everyone has said, research the best biltong/ butchers in the area , their snapsticks slap hard!! also the normal biltong is also sooo good when its fresh! also please try droëwors!
Thanks for the recommendation
Also try milk tarts and cook sisters thay are a type of desert that I really like
Where is Ceres fruit juice? I used to buy it at Wholefoods in New York, should try that one.
We had that in Tanzania. It was very good.
Shalom guys welcome. Have you tried a biltong cake yet? Yummy ! Once you've touched down in Cape Town, why not try one of Busy Bees Biltong cakes...they are quite good. Take Care
Not yet
Biltong cake?
@@tamaryne489 Yes, absolutely amazing. Mixed biltong in a cake form.
smoked beef and the chutney flavour are the best simba chips
Thanks for watching
The roof of my mouth is inpain by just looking at you eating the simba chips 😅
😂😂😂
🤣🤣y'all be killing me fam. LOL Peace and blessings
😂😂 Same to you fam
Snacks here are likes snacks everywhere except Biltong, but I’d suggest going to a few restaurants cause we have a few dozen cultures, Hombaze for some traditional African dishes, there’s traditional Indian and new dishes like bunny chows, joburgs got a good amount of Lebanese, Italians, Chinese and Portuguese people so you’ll never go wrong there, if you want a ridiculous amount of meat the Carnivore Restaurant never disappoints. If you haven’t tried a pie from Woolworths or any petrol station shop then definitely prioritise that cause I don’t think Americans have pies right?
Thanks for watching!
to open the soft eating gums packet, it's easier to open from the bottom. The biltong has coriander on it
Thanks for watching
Biltong is not jerkey. It does start as beef znd it does end up dried, but the path is completely different. Jerkey is smoked(cooked) biltong is not.
Good to know
Biltong thin sliced with yellow fat from a butcher is best
Sounds good
Love you guys😃😃❤️❤️
We love you too. Thanks for watching.
South Africans don't drink Bos tea, I have never drunk it and the choice of sweets was also not our everyday go to sweets. We never eat pre-packed biltong it's dry and disgusting, we only buy that if we desperate or it's on a good special. It has to be wet and fatty and bought from a butcher. The chips were good choices to try out and the biscuits. Should have tried chocolate, the chocolate unlike American chocolate is made from real milk. (Stayed in America for two years and the jerky tasted like meat soaked in sugar and dried out using a machine, not hung like biltong to dry naturally and the Hershey chocolate smells like vomit when you open it but could be the closest thing to chocolate in America). Cabruary and Nestle chocolate, not just the plan but all different flavors is a must, not beacon so much that tastes a bit fake but you can try it for the experience. Milktart, pancakes with cinnamon and sugar inside, koeksisters, that is some real South African food. Breyani, vetkoek, curry and rice, roti's, fish and chips (at the coast is so fresh) and a braai made from wood or charcoal, not gas with at least 5 different meats. South Africans aren't as big on snacks and takeaways, but love real cooked meals, get to taste that and share it with people of all cultures then you have experienced South Africa and it's food.
Marie biscuits are eaten by dipping about 4 or 5 together in tea quickly. Best way to have them.
Thanks for the recommendation
@FREEDOM CHASERS Let me know if you try it and like it.
Don't buy biltong out a sealed bag - get biltong from a biltong store in a brown paper bag - those are the best, it's usually more expensive though, but well worth it. Try the chili biltong if you like spice.
Also, it's pronounced "Mah-ree Biscuit" - it's one of our South African legendary treats. We usually eat them with margarine. Basically, you wanna make an Oreo with them with margarine in the center and then dip it in tea. Well, at least this is the way we eat them in KZN.
prepackaged biltong is not it guys, this is a very limited range of our snacks. that taste of chips is authenticity.
GHOSTPOPS are the BOMB
Yes they are
Seeing that biltong I just knew you wouldn't enjoy it. Those packaged ones from the shop aren't it. Buy from biltong shops or butchery. Also buy the chilli flavor 🔥🔥😭

Okay thanks
You guys are in Sandton right? If you really don’t want to travel far then try “The Good Meat and Deli”. Otherwise better and not too far try “Sloane’s Butchery and Deli” or “Craighall Meat Centre”.
You’ll see a counter where some men in aprons and hairnets are standing. You can even tell them you’re American and you’ve never tried biltong before. I’m sure they’ll be happy to let you try out some of their selection. But just make sure you try the plain beef biltong! Thanks for your awesome videos guys!
Thanks for the recommendations
for Biltong and Dreowors you -don't- go to a brand, you go to a Butcher shop.
The Branded stuff is factory made. The Butcher shop quality stuff you'll have to head out of the cities.
Thanks for watching
Yeah, you guys like the same stuff as me. I don't actually know who likes the braai flavor chips and why they still make it. Ghost Pops were my favourite as a kid. They're worth trying as well.
Facts
yall gotta try koeksisters[not those big ones covered in coconut] and lindt chocolate...
As a south african i have eaten sooooo much biltong, but never have i ever eaten packaged biltong
Yeah, it’s not better than the real thing
We normally give the Marie biscuits to the babies to suckle on.
Good to know
The best biltong and droewors is not find in retailers like checkers and picknpay or Woolies...best you will find in a biltong shop, biltong factory or at the local butcher...
Thanks for watching.
You guys are Funny😂😂😂
Thank you
Biltong is the best of the best. You just bought it where you're not supposed to buy it. Go to a butchery and you'll definitely enjoy it
We will try again soon. Thanks for watching.
You guys need to buy biltong and drywors at a butchery. Freshly sliced biltong is the best.
Thanks for the advice.
Watched your second one first, but I really didn't put my binge watching of your time in South Africa in a specific order. I may well try to watch your videos of other African countries in order.
❤ you guys from KZN Durban 💋
🙌🏾🙌🏾
What about slap chips...and different brand chips...lays and willards...that biltong in vacuumed packs probably like american beef jerky...you need freshly sliced at a butcher...and milk tart...mini tartlets.

Get kudu snap sticks from a butcher you’ll love the flavour
Jungle oats Peanut butter bars ,barbaque big corn bites and ghost pops
Thanks for the recommendations
Jolly Jammers!
Ok
Oh and I heard you guys mention church in this video. If you guys are ever interested please come to City Hope Church. It’s not too far from you guys either.
Thanks for watching
You want to get biltong from a proper butchery, not Pick n Pay - and yes, you can find it in pepper flavour, it just isn't that common. Did you try rusks? Make sure you dip them in your tea/coffee or they'll destroy your teeth. Milk tart is another iconic South African dessert. Marie biscuits are great for making smores - not iconically South Africa, but a great after-braai snack using South African biscuits. If you go to Durban or Cape Town, both have their own iconic dishes that aren't as easy to find in JHB - a bunny chow is iconic, but hard to find a good one in JHB. Cape Malay curries are also really good, but hard to find outside of the Cape.
Thanks for watching
Nah yall should do a second part, cause who drinks Boss ice tea? 😂😂 i do but it took time for me to get used to the taste.
Ask people to recommend popular snacks and try them.
We probably do a part two
@@FREEDOMCHASERSLIFE Try the Blue wrapper Doritos. Apparently its different from the one you have in the states. Would like to know what you think. I agree on the biltong, rather go to a bilton dehli, theres one at every mall.
I don't see any Nik Naks. 😂
