- Let’s fix the Defective Masterbuilt Gravity Series Charcoal Grill Universal Rotisserie. Super Simple! If I can do it, so can you!
Here’s the review video of the Rotisserie!…. • Masterbuilt Gravity Se...
Years later and you’ll be “glad” to know your video is still relevant and important! Just started using mine… can’t believe the quality control for such companies sometimes…
Thanks for Watching! Appreciate that it worked for you! Enjoy!
Thanks Tom! Was having this exact problem and just figured the motor was either broken, or I’d screwed something up with the install, or overloading the rotisserie. Haven’t used the rotisserie function for over a year now because of the past major malfunction from the jump (ended up with two very unevenly cooked yard birds on my first rotisserie cook). I’m inspired to straighten the collar problem out and give it another go, knowing the fix is so straightforward. Thank you for taking the time to sort out exactly what the issue was and then putting the solution out here in the ether!
Thanks for Watching Greg!
These grill companies should hire you as a product tester and consultant for improvements. Not only do you logically point out the pros and cons and develop accessories, but you also fix their mistakes. Nice job Tom!
Thanks Ted! I appreciate you Watching and for the feedback
Just used mine for the first time today, 2 five lb chickens. Doing exactly this reversal garbage, which is why I'm here. After this cook I WILL be modifying it based on your procedure here. Thank you!
Thanks for watching Bob!
Good job Tom..I'm pretty sure it's a mass produced part that Masterbuilt needs to tighten up it tolerances i.e. max and minimum allowances. I would imagine some people will have the same experience or not see it at all because of the machining differences and the people operating them. Hopefully Masterbuilt gets this straightened out soon.
Thanks for Watching Aldo! I agree!
I also lubed it with a very thin coating of bacon grease. That helped a lot with a 20Lb turkey on the rotisserie.
Thanks for watching! Appreciate the feedback
The galling on the inner piece is not only due to thermal expansion, there are defects inside the outer piece that is grabbing when the inner peice expands enough. The defects can be removed with a dremmel tool.
Thanks for Watching Robert! Appreciate the feedback
Thanks. I just got one of these and it started stopping and reversing. I did the things you did to fix it and hope it works smoothly on next cook
Thanks for Watching! Fingers crossed!
Not a problem I have because it's equipment that I don't own. However, I always enjoy watching your clever mind work, so therefore I watched the entire video anyway, and the adds too.
Thanks Big Lew! I appreciate that!
Received my rotisserie - they now have a good 2mm clearance between square adapter and end of collar. The fixing bracket (right hand side) is still wrong and you need to grind off corner or it fouls on shelf screw.
Good to know! Thanks Rick!
Clear explanation of issue & how to fix. Maybe a smear of ceramic grease on re-assembly would be a good idea. Its high temp, so would be unaffected by cooking temperatures.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Tom, thanks for posting, great videos. I was having these issues too and followed your steps to shorten and grind down the sides. I just did a 3 hr cook on the rotisserie and not having any issues stalling anymore but I have noticed that when it gets hot for a prolonged period it will still unthread the side connecting to the motor but no issues finishing the cook. Are you experiencing the same issue? Do you think I need to shorten further?
Thanks for Watching! I have not have that issue, although I haven’t used the rotisserie in over a year
Thanksgiving day, first time. to use my rotisserie and this happens. Took the bird off, followed the tips on the video. bird back on and all is well. Gotta love the added stress during the holidays. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for Watching! Hope all turns out well…
Thanks Tom. Exact same problem on my first cook. I put your fixes in place today!
Thanks for Watching Alden! Glad it worked
Thank you for this video! I was able to implement this fix for my rotisserie while I was cooking with it for the first time!! Saved my cook!!
Thanks for watching! Glad it worked
Nice fix Tom! Gotta have the right tool for the right job! Really appreciate your videos! Thank you!
Thanks Jay! I appreciate you watching and commenting! Thank you
Can you add a washer in between the 2 parts? also the shortening maybe on the other end might be better
Thanks for Watching! If you wish
Compliments on another informative video Tom.
Am I right in thinking that the MB rotisserie kit is designed to support a max. weight of around 9-10kgs/20-22lbs?
Any heavier duty third-party rotisseries capable of supporting ca20kgs/44lbs suitable for the GS 1050 that you’re able to recommend?
Best regards.
Thanks for watching! I’m not aware of any other ones
Great video, and answers my question after my first use of my rotisserie! Going straight to my lathe tomorrow, thanks from here in the UK
Thanks for watching! Enjoy!
I tried this but it still jams solid at around 380F :(. I think it needs some heat proof non-toxic grease.
THANK YOU!!! I put on some hot gloves and fixed it while it was hot mid cook LOL I love this grill. You da man!
Thanks for Watching James! Enjoy!
Looks like you got it Tom. Nicely done
Thanks for Watching Mike! I think do
Why did you shorten the end? I get the sanding of the insert... but may shorten?
Thanks for Watching Larry! The length needed to be shortened because when it was heated and expanded it rubbed
This doesn't seem to be the problem with mine. I took outer part with no rubbing or anything it still did the same thing. I reduced the weight and it worked fine
Thanks for watching Stan! Good to know
Seems like they would have used clockwise tightening threads like they use on portable fans.
Thanks for watching Fred! Agreed
Is the red one an old version or the newer one?
Thanks for watching Johnathan! It my custom painted version
Hi Tom, great video. Thank you. I had the same problem. In my case the problem seemed to manifest itself under load of a couple of chickens. Have you had a cook since the fix?
Thanks for Watching! Yes I have and it works fine
@PM-gifty thats what mine did, and even when I took the outer piece off that you screwed to the motor and just put the shaft straight in, it still did the same thing with and there was nothing for it to rub against. I removed one chicken, and it worked fine. Did you get a fix for yours?
@@stantondavis7564 I ended up taking off about 2mm from the flat end of the shaft with a steel file. This seemed to work fine and now allows the shaft to expand a little more when it heats up.
Great video as usual Tom. But did I miss something? What is the red thing towards the corner of the left grate ?
Thanks for watching William! That’s a flashlight
Just the video I was looking for. Having same prob. Thanks for the fix.
Thanks for Watching! Glad to help
Kinda like the problem you had with blackstone patio oven. Nice fix once again
Thanks for Watching Jake! Yes, good job at pointing that out!
Hey, Tom: I have a 560 and I do t know if I want to buy Masterbuilt’s rotisserie because of the headaches. I thought I saw a video where you added one before Masterbuilt released theirs, but I can’t find the video. Can you point me in the right direction? Or, even better, is there a different one you’d recommend? Thanks.
Thanks for watching! I added a rotisserie to the CG Gravity 980. The MB I used the stick one but modified it to make it operated better. th-cam.com/video/IeXW8bxCRws/w-d-xo.html
Did this fix work long term?
Thanks for watching! Yes
I went to shoot a video with mine also and the first time out of the box it was defective. Masterbuilt (Kamado joe) sent me a replacement but I haven’t tried it yet.
Thanks for watching! Keep us updated
I really don’t understand the need to spin birds when you are cooking indirect. Over a fire-makes sense.
Seems like a “made to sell” idea that’s not practical or necessary.
Glad you got it sorted Tom.
Thanks for watching Eric! Spatchcock chickens are definitely easier
Interesting question. After pondering it, I think that the heat still comes from below and that as the meat turns the juices redistribute within the meat instead of pooling at the bottom and dripping out from one spot. I do a lot of rotisserie chickens on my gas and charcoal grills and they always come out juicy, never dry. My MB 800 is on the way. I think that Tom needs to do a comparison video of 2 birds. Once spun, one spatch;-)
Thanks for watching Joe! Good idea!
#Tom.... Is there a rotisserie for the Char-Griller Gravity 980 or do you have to purchase a Universal one ? please let us know ???
Thanks for Watching Eric, To my knowledge there is not
#Tom.... Well then it behooves you to let all of Us know who follow you if you with your ingenious creativity..... can make one that we can all recreate just like you ???😉
What grit sandpaper did you use? Also, would it work without cutting down the length; I dont have that tool.
Thanks for Watching Adam! Use 60 grit, cutting it down won’t work in my opinion
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ thanks! I saw toy cut the length down a little, but I'll just sand the sides.
I wonder if you could get just the plug from Masterbuilt to use in the modded Char Griller?
Thanks for Watching! That most likely would work, in my opinion this is easier and cheaper
Happened to me too. Fixing it tomorrow
Thank you for this I thought it was just that way. I made a chicken and I wasn't happy, thanks for the work..
Thanks for Watching!
Thanks for this. Had same issue, 1st use today.
Thanks for Watching John!
Great fix and video Tom!
Thanks for Watching!
Just fixed mine. Very easy and works like a charm. Thanks again Tom!
Awesome! Good to know
thanks bud, Im going to givw this a try!
Thanks for Watching Luke! Enjoy!
Same problem. Worked for me!
Thanks for Watching!
Thank goodness I waited and bought a char grill 980...
Thanks for watching Cody!
Thank you for this video. Moral of the story is to not purchase anything that only offer a 1 year warranty.
Thanks for watching!
Tom, I can’t tellya how many people I’ve provided this link to in various MB FB Groups
Thanks for watching and sharing Larry!
Last year mine stop working in the middle of my cook and burnt the one side of my turkey. So mad. Sold my masterbuilt to my neighbor.
Thanks for Watching Chuck! Sorry to hear that
This problem was figured out and put on the internet awhile back from an Australian site. I guess you both might have figured it out but sure seems like you're repeating their findings.
Thanks for Watching!
Rotisseries don't make sense with indirect grilling. The reason to have one is to keep one side the meat out of constant direct flame. I love my Char-Griller 980, but if I want to cook on a rotisserie I will use the Onlyfire ring on my Weber kettle.
Thanks for Watching Kevin! Appreciate the feedback!
This happened to me too
Thanks for watching Mike! Ok
Exact thing happened to me. No point taking it back for another defective unit. Hopefully Masterbuilt sees this and fixes the issue...over in China.
Thanks for Watching! Exactly what I thought!
awesome! thanks!
Thanks for Watching!
MasterBuilt is great after paying more than a Char Grill gravity, $300 in mods and grinding small metal parts.
Lol,,, that is correct, Thanks For Watching Gerald!
I believe you figured it out but my question is the ordinary person doesn't have the tools as you do, which is unexcused able, you have tools that the average person does not terrible unfortunately bastards the length is too much I belive it should come ready to rock and roll out of the box but who am I too say??
Thanks for watching Jason! You are correct
I trashed it and bought a heavy duty one.
Thanks for watching!
we have already PAID for this thing and this is UNEXCEPTABLE in my opinion. Its shobby engineering and they need to correct it. Not everybody has a garage loaded with tools and the skills to ' make it all better '. You PAID for this grill and it should either work as advertized or you should be compensated for the failed part. Peroid.
Thanks for Watching Colin! You are correct
