I'd argue the other way round: It's surprising how many combat games are lewd. The purpose of these games isn't actually to be pornographic, but most people who like porn also like other things, they don't spend all their time watching porn. These sorts of mechanical lewd games are there for when the people who like porn want to shoot stuff or fight stuff, but still want to feel a bit tittilated. The lewdness is the seasoning in this context, it's there to enhance the experience, not to be the experience.

I subscribed to Josh because he mentioned jiggle physics and said, "I got you, now you have to subscribe". It made me laugh out loud and feel like a fool, but he delivers excellent reviews and philosophy.
I started Nikke with jiggle physics and ended up loving the dog creature meme of the most tragic character in the game.

The thing I don't like about sexy games, especially RPGs since that's my go-to, is that they reward you for failing. I want to achieve something and get rewarded with a sexy moving png of the MC, not deliberately lose to a lvl 5 green slime and have the giant keyboard cleaner fuck the brains out of the MC. If I do play the game properly, I see no sexy scenes. Truly infuriating.
That's where the real game begins: the Henry Stickmin routine of finding all of the various ways you can fail.
good compromise is the rare time that winning the fight unlocks a gallery of the lose condition scenes. Id name the few I have but, you know how it is.
TBH that's the appeal of those types of games. You're intentionally seeking out the different failure scenes. It fits with the concepts and setups involved, it fits with the setup, and it helps the game last longer. Most importantly it serves the writing of a scene and the fantasies being conveyed. Power play is a large part of many of those scenes.
that is a genre of sex games game-over-sex, not all games are in that genre, I suggest The Last Sovereign, which admittedly is a bit beyond a sex game
Corruption of Champions, Trials in Tainted Space are more closer to that, unfortunately they are primarily text based

What's funny is that Nikke, the game they use as an example of a game knowing what it is, has a shit ton of memes about how it actually has a really good plot and just lures you in with the character designs

The game indeed sold on the premise to have a game with both good gameplay and quality pr0n and when it came into beta/early access some people were disappointed that the shmup and turn-based tactics phases lacked depth and that H scenes were mostly a series of animations that seemed disconnected from the the other parts of the game.
I suppose there were some pretty vocal detractors, as usual, who gave that impression of "too much game, not enough seggz" discourse.

I mean there's no singular GOTY awards so it's hard to tell what the pool is. Plenty of creators had Outer Wilds as their GOTY when it came out, which rather than sex just has existential dread.

I honestly can't wait for Josh to be on The Geekenders again. That whole episode was a treat from start to finish.
Huniepop is such a banger game. The dialogue is abysmally horny and some of the characters are insufferable but man the puzzle aspect of it is genuinely wildly engaging.
Just imagine how awesome mirror's edge could have been if you wouldn't be able to pick up a gun and just do parcour only.

"Virgin Route" lewd games are also pretty popular, where you try *NOT* having sex or unlocking the H-Scenes. In fact, quite a bit of reviewers ad "virgin route possible" to their reviews of story driven games.
I want the game AND the lewds. That's why I'm not playing another RPG or another platformer, and that's why I'm not reading or looking up hentai.

I wager half the time, especially with those big budget games, the Devs know they should be stopping sooner. The boss demands more hours of content so they can advertise bigger numbers of potential playtime on the box, though, so figure out more things to toss on top of the core gameplay.
Tangentially related to the idea of how one can implement sex or sexy elements to a piece of media, the #1 thing that will turn me away from it is if it acts coy. "Ooooh, look at these risque camera angles, oooh, a lot of these outfits sure are Revealing, huh? Don't worry though we have Lore Justifications!"
If you're going to make that kind of stuff part of your game, I beg you to own it. Be unapologetic in your lewdness, because even if I don't care for it I'll respect it, and those who love it will adore you for it.

im going to say this.
Alot of adult game back in the game was like really bad like really bad there was no production value in them at all.
(lightly dressed girl is not the same thing here and usually thats just the advertisement and a 30 sec camo from said character that suprise had about zero screen time and zero point for the plot).
Now we have game whit actual games in it and adult content (this was not even a thing 10 years ago) because they can be made and they have a budget and its made by a team as studio exist that can do it. before it was one dude whit a rusting computer in a basement doing it as a side project (sure the game cost like 4 usd but that was also the cost of the tape the game came in).
so no profit.
meanwhile big studie pays like 50 cent per tape because they knew that they would sell at let say 10.000 copies and thoes can get 10.000 copies printed for 5 usd whit a manual and cover art for the "box".
so for the pure adult game they was just pure showelware as we would call them back then.

I'm not convinced this is entirely accurate - no game just has one quality, because at minimum there's a visual layer on top of the mechanical layer. Doom isn't just a game about shooting things, it's a game about shooting demons or something. It has quite a different feel to a game about shooting humans or a game about shooting aliens, even when the mechanics are very similar. And that's where jiggle physics come in. "Sexualisation" is a visual layer, it's always going to come in combination with a mechanical layer. Of course, often when you say "I want to see something sexy, now what mechanics do I want with that?" the answer is often going to be "I don't care", but the other angle, where you say "I want to shoot things, now what visuals do I want with that?" will for some audiences often generate the answer "sexy visuals" - and for other audiences will generate the answer "very strongly not sexy visuals". That's where I think we get most of the problem of games trying to be everything. They're usually not too bad at sticking to one mechanical premise, even if they do sometimes have pointless crafting peripherals. The thing that really gets people worked up is that there are a few visual types that are mutually exclusive, and a lot of companies try to find a balance between visuals that satisfies no one.
I don't think this is a games design issue. This is a publisher issue forcing developers to beat dead horse IPs to a bloody disgusting pulp. Is COD even COD anymore? You can wall run and use jet packs. That's like Halo type shit.

Survival Crafting Open-World are often made because they are popular. Demand creates these games. A lot of games without these mechanics are not even showing up on any charts in Steam, because players (me included) expect them to be in the game. And there are almost no games that are not made better when Co-Op is added ("oh, there's no co-op, scratch that" is a common reaction in my group of friends). So i disagree with Josh there.

I would say "Survival Crafting Open-World" games are popular for a minute...and then the refunds start. "Make your own fun" games are a waste of my time. Yes, I see people clambering for the Survival Crafting Open-World on Reddit and such, but at the end of the day, it's the BG3s that take the prize.
The key point is "The game is not automatically good by having those mechanics". Devs often shoehorn those mechanics in games where they don't belong just because they are popular and end up being pointless. No one is saying they are bad by default.
@@aimeeinkling Rust and Ark are some of the most consistently successful and played games of all time. 7 Days to Die and Project Zomboid are always in the steam top 50. Valheim has consistently stayed in the top 50. Palworld broke the internet for a bit and is still quite well played. ETC. The genre is super popular.
@@_JPkun Focusing on one game element is also not good by default. Focusing or not focusing do not make your game better or worse. As always its just down to the execution. Doom's focus on shooting and push forwards combat doesn't mean they didn't make a narrative or RPG systems or etc. And you can try and argue those all revolve around the shooting but I could make the exact same argument about Palworld and how all the survival crafting open world systems all serve the Pals in just as compelling of a manner.

Like that game was even worse than just; "you put a game in my porn". They decided to make a game where you're all about going fast and getting ass, and then made the GAME-game the slowest slog imaginable: "here is 5 minutes between every basic-ass wave" and "here is a xcom bit, where you have to stop; every 2 seconds to read something". Then they also made the ADULT game, all about the most low hanging "chestnuts, as in penis" and "Fidget Spinner... that's the joke" jokes.
What a mess that was.
There's a reason why almost every warframe is either hung or caked up. They know their audience.

I've only played Warframe briefly, buy I know the "Death by Snu Snu" Hildryn video.
Warframe cake ALMOST gets me, but they're so damn weird. Some tumorous, some give me a kind of insect vibe, a lot of bizarre anatomy... There's always something that completely throws it off. I love the game for that, making everything kinda ugly.

The kickstarter game that is referenced here is a rule 34 pornographic weird game called "Subverse". Don't ask me why I know this.
Well, when I was made aware of it, they were pushing the game part of the 'adult game', making the claim that they were going to make a adult game that was worth having the game part of their tag.
I bought into it, and decided to give it a go because having something called a game being a bit shit at the game part frustrated me with the couple of other ones. Ended up being disappointed with it being 'mature' in the same way that most other video games are mature, in that it's squarely aimed at a 14 year old's sensibilities in the writing, and only one of the two gameplay types being actually halfway decent as a game. They also put in so much 'story' that it is basically a movie of porn level plot, while the adult scenes are a loop that I'd expect out of a Newgrounds video.
So in summary, it's a below average game, with below average 'adult' scenes, with _way_ too much of their 'plot' in it that is aimed firmly at someone not actually mature while charging more then the quality would demand.

@@fawazgerhard2742if you actually want a porn game about monster girls with an actually good plot and explores a lot of deep questions and concepts behind a society where monster girls coexist with humans then Monster Girl Quest is essentially that.
I agree that most porn games have crap plot, most of them are boring with little to no understanding of pacing, but there are some gems like Monster Girl Quest out there and they're imo really underrated and underappreciated. Trust me when i say Monster Girl Quest has better plot than most triple A games released nowadays, vns in general are a powerhouse when it comes to plot and story with Fate / Stay Night being one of the best out there.

iirc it was stated that 1.0 is coming soon so that is something to look forward to, honestly the game was still a bunch of fun, I think it had a nice balance of the lewd with the gameplay mixed in between and surprisingly enjoyable writing for the story.
I like Subverse, but I think the issue might be that the gameplay is almost entirely disconnected from the main reason we decide to play it. It's not really a NSFW game, it's a space game that has a lot of NSFW cutscenes interspersed.
@@dojelnotmyrealname4018 yeah, there is only a handful of games i can think of that really blend the gameplay and nsfw stuff together well.
Keep in mind the phrase the customer is always right. Basically if the customer wishes to buy it sell it, or something to that effect. Look at Palworld, people wanted to catch monsters and do stuff with friends, it's a simple game, with easy to get into ideas, it tells ya what to do and you figure out most of the game in about 20 minutes.

I mean, they aren't wrong, sex sells, but the tricky part is knowing how to implement it so it isn't off putting or overshadows the actual game unless they're hyper focusing on one pervy group and then they just go all out in that direction
Trying to know how to implement it is where most games fail. People who are intolerant of sexuality in games are *extremely* sensitive to it. Any inclusion of sexuality is offputting to them. And people who want sexuality in games want a solid amount of it, they hate it being secreted away because it makes it feel like the game isn't actually for them. The way to go is to decide whether you definitely do or definitely don't want to add sexuality to your game, and then to willingly drop the other audience, assuming they'll have no interest, and making sure what you make does properly appeal to whichever audience you chose.
@@yurisei6732 It's tough because some games do get away with walking the line, like Final Fantasy X comes to mind, where it has fan service but it wasn't so much it was off putting, but then other games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 just hard pivoted into appealing specifically overly horny female designs to the point it completely alienated a huge part of the player base of the first game. It's a tough thing, I agree though, usually it's better to pick a lane and stick to it but almost every game has some level of it even if it's subtle, because sex sells whether it's gratuitous or as simple as having a conventionally hot protagonist. Every game has to find the line they need to get close to without crossing to off putting part of the demographic they're after.

The Marketing does NIKKE dirty. The story is amazing (play chapter 1, trust me) The Charakter lore is quite deep and fleshed out, the OST fucking SLAPS and the gameplay can get quite tactical in the late game. You skimpy clothes are just the cherry on top. Playing daily since launch 1,5 years ago and highly recommend it.

Josh Strife Hays has quickly become one of my favorite video game content creators. This show with Dodger and and Jessie really reminds me of the other Cooptional Podcast with TotalBiscuit.
Nikke unironically has a pretty good story, yes it has the usually cliches, but just finishing the tutorial will tell you what to expect from the story of the game.
In the community a ton of people say they clicked for the jiggle physics and stayed for the story(and the jiggle physics)

"good" seems charitable. Without one of the characters I'd probably consider it perfectly mediocre. It doesn't do anything amazing, but it doesn't hit major pitfalls either.
Comparing it to other gacha games it's revolutionary. It has a story instead of a procedurally generated template.
A stark contrast to something like Honkai which barely has a plot and I hate every single character in it: the less screentime they have the better.

I think the problem with huniepop 2 was that it made the game too complicated than it originally was, making the concept break down at times. Like dating 2 girls at once and implicitly doing the deed IN PUBLIC feels as if the developer forgot why the night scenes worked so well. Not to mention the characters are waaaaay worse then before by flanderizing them to the point that they can be described with one word (they even butchered my beloved MILF Jessie).
The point is: It's difficult to balance fanservice and good gameplay especially in R18 games. It can be done, it's just incredibly difficult.
