    They don't have great reviews on Amazon, lots of people thought they were good but many didn't. Common things were... they broke pounding into the drywall. They stripped out while inserting the screw. They didn't pull out very easy and often broke apart. Just various experiences to consider

    • @karyhansen5082
      @karyhansen5082 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      plaster & lathe walls most often are thicker than the half inch drywall he's working with. Also plaster & lathe walls are much more brittle so the hammering action probably will have the blow out effect on the inside leaving the hole weaker overall. At 2:08 in the video there is the beginning of blow out along the top of the anchor. I've never seen that type of anchor but it does look like it will do a good job.

    So, no need to use Molly screws anymore?
    Why have I never seen these before if they've been around since the 90s...?
    My first thought is regarding shelving support, would they best be installed in a wall horizontally?
    Would vertically increase the chance that any weight would cause these to - over time - tear downwards through the drywall like a knife?

    • @JC-fj7oo
      @JC-fj7oo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Probably want to go horizontally. I'm guessing that there is a reason you never see these anymore.
      Also the trick with the big plastic screws is when you're done, just screw them in tight enough to be a little bit countersunk, and then mud right over them. No need to remove them.
      The problem with these thin ones is they crush up the drywall and the backing, so even if you dab a bit of mud on the front, there's still a big hole in the wall. It's a very weak spot you could just poke your finger through. You would want to put some sort of tape on where you patch it. Which defeats the purpose.

    How do these compare to the 3m wall claws?
    Edit:
    It's been about a week later and I just bought some to test out and use on my Milwaukee Packout wall mounts. Here's what happened
    Bought a pack of 50
    Used on the drywall portion of my garage
    Used 16 total
    They hammer in pretty easily 👍🏽
    They feel somewhat cheap, but then again they were so can't complain too much
    Didn't happen but I could feel how a potentially wrong angle swing can bend or snap one of the sides of the face/head 👎🏽
    When screwing the screws in, one of them partially pulled the anchor out of the wall, and by result opened a wider hole in the wall 👎🏽
    Packout wall mounts were loaded with Milwaukee power tools (M18 high torque 1/2 impact wrench, M12 impact driver, M12 hammer drill, M18 router, M18 orbital sander, M12 circular saw, 4 M18 batteries, 2 M12 batteries)
    Overall felt sturdier than I thought they would 👍🏽
    For light to medium jobs, would recommend 👍🏽
    For heavy duty jobs, would not recommend 👎🏽

Along the lines of fateners to hang crap on i found some big assed hooks about 15 or 20 years ago at a big lots or somewhere. These are amazing. They make a tiny hole in the drywall and leave only about 3/8 of a small strong wire sticking out. Some are capable of holding 75lbs. Home depot sells some now. I swear by them. The round threaded cone anchors are better than the nylon ones. The nylon ones (the first type) break a lot, even screwing them in. The metal ones are still my first choice, and the hole they leave is fairly easy to fill. These metal spring-pop-out anchors being demonstrated don't look to me like they would hold as much weight and resist a direct outward pull as the conical (metal only) screws. which, besides heat shrink tubing, has been my favorite invention of the last three decades for fasteners and wiring. Stay away from any plastic anchors because they are crap, even though the specs claim they support more weight. It doesn't matter if they break before you get them installed.

  • @curiosity2314
    @curiosity2314 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    No, I'll stick with the worm drive fastener and use a #2 Phillips to poke the hole and then drive it home slowly until seated correctly. You have double action with good worm drive anchors, the worm itself and the spread on the other side of the wall. The size of the hole matters none as it's easy to patch if and when needed (any size hole even a break away). For a picture frame 36x36 inches I would be more then comfortable with using a nail unless the frame was made of lead. A nail on an angle will hold allot of weight in the downward direction, it's the lateral force where your exampled anchor will fail before the worm drive installed properly. Is what it is, again no I would not use this anchor.

    • @oui-nonmaybe2127
      @oui-nonmaybe2127 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Curiosity Interesting about your mention of the lateral force. Do you think if he slid the metal wing tips verticaly, instead of Horizontaly, it would be stronger hold? Seems to me, the wings should open all the way back-flat against the material, even Bigger wings, for the heavier stuff. Needs to be Tweaked eh? Anyway, Makes sense to me. Maybe... :) Thanks for sharing your point of view. Very interesting tought. Take care Curiosity~ Stay Well everyone.

    Its funny but I have a very specific application for drywall anchors that I need almost everyday during heating season. No anchors work in the 1" drywall behind the 60 year old base board electric heaters that constantly fall off the walls because the drywall has become brittle in 60 years of heat loading. I have 430 electric baseboard heaters that all have 10-30 drywall screws added over the years. This might be a viable solution. I just turned 36 60-100amp breakers on for the heat in my buildings and I'm gonna get a couple hundred of these and see if they work.

    I used these a few months ago with a bathroom shelve, they came in the package, I didn't know they sold them. I thought they were some top secret anchoring system that only came in specifically specific bathroom shelve kits, now I know. What are they actually called?

    These have been around for decades and I can't understand why they aren't more popular. OMG I remember selling these in 1990, and now I'm depressed, thanks TRZ.

    • @JC-fj7oo
      @JC-fj7oo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they aren't popular because you can't find them in stores. I've never seen one. Also the "removable" part isn't that important usually. Things that get moved around like pictures can just be hung from a nail. And things that need to support real heft NEED a stud. Anchors are not enough most of the time. Any of them. So things that are hung from anchors, you need to make sure that you are putting them somewhere right the first time and they rarely get moved. I patch a drywall screw maybe once or twice a year at most.... Jut not a big enough deal to worry about.

    • @RustyNail600
      @RustyNail600 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JC-fj7oo you're right that things that need an anchor often don't need to be removed. And things that need anchors generally need a stud (or backing). But think about all the things out there that don't have backing but still need substantial support. One end of your towel rack might hit a stud, but what about the other? Or, hanging radiant heaters? They almost never hit right on a stud... So, they need anchors. If any of these things ever get stripped out (because people are hard on stuff), this anchor might leave a smaller spot of damage that could be repaired easily.

    • @JC-fj7oo
      @JC-fj7oo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RustyNail600 right but if this got ripped out you'd have just as much damage to deal with...
      Plus if you ever do decide you just want to move something, with the big plastic ones you just drill it in a little bit farther and put the mud right over it and you're done. No muss, no fuss.
      With this thing you've got a slit cut into the drywall paper, and all of the rock behind it is crushed. If you just try to put a little mud over the top you're going to have an area where you can just stick your finger straight through. You would have to either cut it open and do it the same way, or tape over it and then you're mudding and feathering.... It's not any smaller of a project.
