- This video of the S.T. Crapo locking through at Sault Saint Marie takes place in June of 1928. Seen in the video, aside from the vessel herself, Is Mr. S.T. Crapo as well as his wife, daughter and three of her college friends.
The original film was fond by Mr. Crapo's great granddaughter, who had it digitized and shared the unedited product with me in order to have it posted on this site. The nearly century old film was shot with a hand-wound movie camera. Thus, it made the people look as if they were moving in fast motion. So, I had to slow it down to 47% of the original speed just to make it look normal and then use a computer trick to blend the motion. Each segment was in short bursts and when digitized it was out of sequence. I did my best to get it back into sequence, but there is still one shot that is misplaced... see if you can catch it. Additionally, the flashing of the movie played hell with my Magix video software. Shouting curse words at it for two days didn't really help... an adjustment in the "advanced" settings did.

I'm amazed at the volume of heavy black smoke the Crapo puts out! The Engineer must have enjoyed putting the coal to the boilers.

It's uncanny that Miss Sarah could provide this film, and Wes could present it at this time when the S.T. Crapo faces her demise.....
Almost as if she wants her spirit to live on thru this film.
The final scene of her "departure" is very appropriate.

Beautiful footage! I am sad she was broken up, this makes me think that the Lee a Tregurtha and Alpena will meet the same fate once they are retired. Makes me sad since both are historic vessels not only that the Tregurtha is probably one of the last of the infamous T tankers of the Second World War! At least i hope that they’re wheelhouses will be preserved..
Cool video. An engineer shared some pics in a blurb book from his childhood where his ancestors rode the Crapo passing the Wyandotte.

What a wonderful look into an early Crapo sailing! I loved watching it. Sound was introduced right after 1928, so we barely missed having sound. But who cares? Thanks to your narrative, I just didn't miss it.

Great editing on this old film
Thanks! It was a MAJOR pain. The flashing in the video really messed with my software. I thought I had it ready on Friday, but it glitched- so I spent all day Saturday and Sunday I was up until 2am working it without a cure. Monday morning I figured it out. Whew.

Hey Wes, I was wondering if you could help me out. I've been trying to find some deckplans of the MV Seaway Queen (one of the ships in your J.L. Mauthe video), but I've had no luck. I was hoping you could either help me find some or point me towards a site where I could find them
I've never had much luck finding plans for Canadian-built vessels. The collector I use mainly has US vessels. BTW- SQ was one of my favorites too. Some of the best looking lakers came out of Canada.

That line goes into Algoma Central's yard. I used to live right next to it. Walked onto that trestle all pissed up one night with a couple friends. Walked right to the jackknife. Technically we crossed illegally into the U.S . If any of us fell?😧😖😔

@@authorwes Doesn't seem to bother the migrants. I'm thinking the Rio Grande is a little warmer too. Water really moves under that trestle. Especially in November. You know where that water comes from, dont you? Ties where kind of frosty. One of my friends was wearing cowboy boots. I think there was a girl with us? Like I said, we were " pretty gooned ", to use the Soo term. Luckily I knew when the trains came. Most of the time 😒. The trestle was built by Dominion bridge, somewhere out of Quebec. 1895? , 97? That could be wrong. It was a long time ago.
