Jeff Baker: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To a book lover, books are beautitful. If it were me, I would stack the books & other media a little more carefully, so they don't get damaged and maybe keep more careful records of what I had, but that's it.
Not to me. Those books are rotting away because they can’t be properly stored and then bought. What customer will find x book in the bottom of that pile
it's not that he's a hoarder but he needs a bigger bookstore to have room for all the books. If he was a hoarder then all the people who own bookstores are hoarders.
No way he can afford another store. And no way he could qualify for a loan to get one. No doubt he has regulars, but they are not going to make him rich. Selling books is not profitable these days. Why do you think Amazon expanded its fare?
This makes me sad. I grew up in Cobble Hill and would pass this bookstore all the time. I remember buying a book here for a school report. Sure the place was messy, but it had its charm and felt like part of the neighborhood. Like a landmark almost. Of course the neighborhood has changed so much since I hardly recognize it anymore. I wish him the best of luck.
My godfather had a record store that looked like this...the store was called Platterworld in Garfield NJ. It no longer exists...he passed away. I love this type of store.
OMG, Community Bookstore was what I Ioved best about living in adjacent Carroll Gardens decades ago! Few weekends went by when I did not spend a couple hours in the quiet shop -- at that time, admittedly not as densely packed as shown in this video. My favorite finds were unusual cookbooks and hardcover editions of novels I had loved first in paperback, some of which sit on my bookshelves today. I did throw up a little in my mouth when a Google search revealed the storefront is a real estate office now. However, the words of the dark-haired woman with the short haircut ring very true: we can't expect these special kinds of shops to be around forever and we should strive to create them anew. Wishing all the best to Mr. Scioli!
Very romantic, the idea of such a place as this. A place so small where you could get lost in more ways then one. It's a place of refuge and a den of chaos. A mystical sense of self buzzes within one whose unimaginable appetites for solitude will indeed go unsatiated. Some unknown voice speaks to any of us, begging at the precipice of wonder that we would relinquish our grasp of clenched fists whom cling to life so dearly. To take the plunge into this unfamiliar unfathomable chasm... It is awe inspiring. Can you imagine?
He loves it and he hates it...I can relate to that😃 Those books are beautiful but they sure are a burden, he needs a break💚 Bless his heart, I'm sure he's such an important human being.
Love this. Yes, books everywhere... something so inviting about this too. I would be so excited when finding a new treasure.. a Sunday afternoon treat!
This reminds me of a very similar, massive used book store in Long Beach, CA called Acres of Books. The Long Beach store was much more organized though. It featured extremely tall shelves stacked on top of each other, and each stacked shelf was packed tight with what was reported to be over a million books. It was kind of scary going in there. Ray Bradbury spent many, many hours at the store, and he even name-checked Acres of Books in his essay, “I Sing the Bookstore Eclectic.”
Sex Pistol oh my God you think like me ...I will tell you what I will do I will make a full storey of my house a library most likely the basement because it's better
Kudos to John who saves these treasures, and to the donators who have enough love/respect for the written gendre to bring them to him instead of a trashpile. Book reading is a dying art, and may be eliminated altogether in the face of new technologies. And yes, I have shelves of beloved books I will never trash.
I have a bookstore in my city close to me, that is very similar to this. I love going there because you can find absolute treasures of books there you din’t know you needed. The owner used to also know where everything was! Now a group of volunteers own it since it’s an absolute gem. Collette & co - The Hague, The Netherlands
I was there, mostly in the trash. There was a large container of books maybe 20 by 8 feet where he threw them out, and they were all free at that point. It was a really amazing place.
If the owner gives me the chance to organise this, i would not hesitate to do so without any delay. This man is incredible intellectual person and these books are a treasure, huge treasure. I wish i could know him and be connected.
TH-cam just now suggests this to me. I'm sitting here thinking I missed an opportunity to go there! I would have loved to go in that store. I would've wanted to buy so many books. He needed a bigger space for sure. I hope he's doing okay. I can imagine the loving it and hating it. It's was a big responsibility on his own. ... I feel there is more to the story. Who ever suggested indie movie I agree - or documentary. Everyone has a story.
He looks like the guy who you'd walk up to and ask for a HP Lovecraft meets Sherlock Holmes, and he'd return in less than 5 minutes with 3 books that are exactly what you're looking for!
about 20 years ago I lived in Penrith in Sydney Australia, There was a bookstore at the end of an arcade on the main street like this. Loved going there. The books found you, not you finding the books.
I wish we had a bookstore like that near me. It is so hard to find used bookstores now. Online you don't get the experience like you do at a physical store. I would spend lots of time at a store like that!
awe, this is extremely sweet. he seems like a pleasant old man who enjoys reading. i feel as though he’s trying to read as much as possible before times up. tbh i would do the same
I mean my town doesn't have any bookstores, except for the unupdated book section in the mall. I would gladly browse through this bookstore. I'm sure there are a lot of good finds.
I don't know, I feel like there's a line between a shop having character because it's a bit cluttered and a shop just being entirely impractical like this one.
there's something beautiful about this
ahyaok100 😏I know right!
You only need food and time to just read. Is kind of beautiful.
Jeff Baker: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To a book lover, books are beautitful. If it were me, I would stack the books & other media a little more carefully, so they don't get damaged and maybe keep more careful records of what I had, but that's it.
In our current world, I would say it’s beautifully archaic.
Not to me. Those books are rotting away because they can’t be properly stored and then bought. What customer will find x book in the bottom of that pile

Yeah if he kept it organized/neat and had room for all of it (bc all he needed was a bigger store) then he wouldn’t be considered a “book hoarder”
I would have so much fun organizing that store.
Krystal Utkin Looking your photo I believe it 😁.
What does my photo have to do with anything?
You look like a librarian )) , ready to kill who touches that books . :) I am joking!
Lol thanks?

I see art and passion. I hope he opened another bookstore.
Same. God bless you cheers

You don’t go there to find a book, the books finds you.
Cringe. Try writing something original.

The fascinating thing is it looks like chaos to us but the owner knows where everything is. Amazing.
My godfather had a record store that looked like this...the store was called Platterworld in Garfield NJ. It no longer exists...he passed away. I love this type of store.
Robert Varner I lived a block away.
if there was an indie movie about this guy and his bookstore, i would watch the heck out of it.
Me too .
Imagine growing up in a family where education was so valued that your basement was like this. Too amazing.

YOU ARE A BRILLIANT, BEAUTIFUL BEING! THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO! WOW!
The community should gather to help and declutter these books. They were treasures 🥺🥺

You love the job of a bookseller

This is my paradise!
😍❤ yes!!
Wanna invite me sometime?
Scioli didn't sell the bookstore. He sold the BUILDING ... for $5.5M.
Good for him
He seems like gentle caring soul❤ bless him ! Hope he’s doing well now
the makes me so happy and i can't explain why... it's chaotic but beautiful?
and the owner is defo someone i would want to have a chat with !!
alacarteno 👏
AMEN!
He looks like someone with plenty of wisdom to share.

Its beautiful. I think i would've been drooling over the place. Its freakin gorgeous. Well its gorgeous to a booklovers eyes. 💖

Part of me wants to get rich and buy him all the space and or bookcases thar he needs
Omg my heart 💔💔💔 i want to work there for free just to be with that much of books. Can anyone tell me where all the books went after closing 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
miss marple to organize it,it kinda drives me crazy (i will even do it for free)
I was there, mostly in the trash. There was a large container of books maybe 20 by 8 feet where he threw them out, and they were all free at that point. It was a really amazing place.
Agreed!
James Kettle that is so sad.
@@jameskettle9181 that is just sad.
Two appalling things about this: the closure of the store and that reporter's clothes.
The reporter's clothes are great tho
Wait what? 😂what do you have against bow ties 😮🤷♀️
Well thanks for making me horribly sad tonight youtube
I know, huh? Im sad too.
Books in huge lots are among my favorite things!!!! Thank God for books!! :-)
If the owner gives me the chance to organise this, i would not hesitate to do so without any delay. This man is incredible intellectual person and these books are a treasure, huge treasure. I wish i could know him and be connected.
this shop is a sound engineers dream. it's a perfect isolation booth
I rewatch this every month or so lol love it!
I love how you interviewed the same people that cause places like this to close up bc of high rent
Exactly!
Yep
Oh look, my bedroom's on the Internet
I need to tidy that shit up..
The amount of vocal fry in this video is outstanding!
I find this bookstore so beautiful !
A place like this, can prompt many to buy a book or two. It seems so special, in a cool / different sort of way. ❤
This is so sad that bookstore had a soul.
It didn't have a soul but im sure it has asbestos somewhere.
I walked by this shop often. I never went inside. Wish I had.
I like it being like that though. You can go in there and just wait for a book to call out to you. Like looking for buried treasure.
These are my favorite type of bookstores...
There's a bookstore like this about a minute away from where I live( also in NY) and I've only been in there a few times but it's so weird and cool.
TH-cam just now suggests this to me. I'm sitting here thinking I missed an opportunity to go there! I would have loved to go in that store. I would've wanted to buy so many books. What happens to all the books?
They were delicious.
I would go to this bookstore once a day. I will sleep tonight fantasizing about organizing it. Heavenly!
That place is like heaven for me
i LOVE this place it's beautiful
This man is really great.

Every bookworm who goes der ..will definitely cry..
visit the Dogtown Bookstore in Gloucester Massachusetts. very similar set up. also, what did he do with all the books when he closed his store?
I've been to Gloucester Mass. Its a beautiful place. My Uncle owned the Traveler boat that sat in the harbor.
Man the music makes me tear up even more
I feel so bad, I want to work for him for free and help him!
about 20 years ago I lived in Penrith in Sydney Australia, There was a bookstore at the end of an arcade on the main street like this. Loved going there. The books found you, not you finding the books.
Reminds me of _Voltaire & Rousseau_ in Glasgow, UK.
The piled and falling books remind of an episode of Hoarders. You are just waiting for someone to get hurt.
What an amazing place. It would be good to go there just to stand in there. It's lovely. You are incredible.
I wish we had a bookstore like that near me. It is so hard to find used bookstores now. Online you don't get the experience like you do at a physical store. I would spend lots of time at a store like that!
I would still be dying to visit this even just once in my lifetime 🥺😭
When I become a millionaire, I'm going to get him a building space twice as large. Incredible mind!
Are you a millionaire now?
Now?
Now???
Maybe now?
Perhaps now??
The disjointed guitar strings playing in the background gave a surreal sense of browsing that store
We have a shop in St Leonard’s Australia that is exactly the same. It’s amazing
A gold mine.
that is how a general bookstore should be
Do u know whats crazy, no matter how messy it looks, the book seller always knows where to find the book
You can see his frustration
This is my favorite You Tube. I watch it every day that I sad, it makes me happy, makes me wish, makes me smile. I will take it to my grave.
Oh man, I would love to be able to organize that lot !
When the opening credits said "Booklyn" I wonder if that was on purpose. I hope he got a LOT for that building
Wow, this is amazing. I would love to have a bookstore but they are not working easily nowadays.
love how he smokes in there, with all that paper...
Being smothered in an avalanche of books seems like a pretty decent way to go 🤷♀
Modern Art!
Is it okay to cry after this video?
God! I just want to hug that bookseller.
'It reminds me of my grandmother's basement.' Hhahaha If only my grandma had such a basement. I'd stay there all the time
I love to read and feel the book. Much love to books 📚 ❤
Wow! So sad. Thanks.
Please give us an update!! I want to see what happened to the store.
It’s touched my heart wonderfully
I wish i was there
I would love to run a used book store- a small Hobbit hole like shop full of treasures.
much like the sitcom "Black Books".
That's exactly what I was thinking!! The guy needs a nice glass of wine. xD
This makes my scalp itch.
I'm having a Liz Lemmon moment: "I want to go to there" 😂
god! Look at it, all those stories trying to escape
awe, this is extremely sweet. he seems like a pleasant old man who enjoys reading. i feel as though he’s trying to read as much as possible before times up. tbh i would do the same
it's amazing and sad omg i'm gonna cry now 😭
Cool bookstore and so much read.
📚📚📚📚
I'm gonna arrange everything. Little by little, just give me a dozen of books and that's enough🥰
I love this kind of mess, it's all books
I mean my town doesn't have any bookstores, except for the unupdated book section in the mall. I would gladly browse through this bookstore. I'm sure there are a lot of good finds.
I hate malls..so cold and stale.. could never live out in the burbs.. horrific
This made my heart warm idk why
I don't know, I feel like there's a line between a shop having character because it's a bit cluttered and a shop just being entirely impractical like this one.
the only cavern i'd be glad to get lost in.
At 2:02 I see a paperback copy of House of Leaves. That book is insane...
2:16 - 2:48 WOW he really did know where every book is!
Yeah, right, we saw one example of a super-common book often assigned for classes.
I would have fun sifting through all the piles of books; there's bound to be a great encyclopedia in that big pile.
Saddest video I ever saw 😭
I would love to organize these books
