Chris, this is a great interview, you’re asking all the right questions and getting Timmy to become more engaged into the conversation and covering all tick boxes at the Ranch. Great 👍 job
Kelly and Timmy are so smooth and easy to watch. Stoked on this footage and board review from Timmy. Yew! My guess is the fins were the Greg Webber fins... ;) Whatever they are... i want them!
Our favorite thing about him is that he is excited to surf anything... as long as the wind is good, he'll ride ankle high to as big as it gets. His appetite for waves is unreal.
I’ve never heard Timmy being interviewed before. I’ve met him once surfing and he just ripped. It seemed to me like he was just in the zone but in this interview he’s so laid-back and seems like I could talk to him about surfing and surfboard design for hours. Of course over some tasty grub and a couple of beers.

I bet the quads he used were the Futures by Tomo! At the ranch its mostly FCS fins and Timmy mentions weird fins on the quad... it has to be the new Future Tomo quads!!!
As a heavier intermediate guy, I feel a little left out in the Tomo Hydroshort range. You guys go from 6’2 38 litres with a maneageable 20 9 1/16 width, to a 6’4 41.8 litres with a massive 21 1/16 inches. I know what you’re gonna say - go the sci-fi 6’3. But lft goes yellow in like 2 seconds. I’m a regular guy and I want a board that looks decent for a least 2 years. My Skx looked shite after 6 months, half of it was yellow. Can you bridge the gap in the hydroshort to 6’3 40.5 litres with 20 9 1/16 pretty please with sugar on top???
Scotty thanks for the feedback. On the coloring front, we spent a lot of time last year working with a new form of recyclable resin. We were excited by the resin because it's something that could enable surfboards to be recycled in the future, or at least partially recycled, but as you noticed, it created some coloring issues. After experimenting we've paused it and you can expect LFT to look great after two years now. If you want, please email Matt.mahoney@firewiresurfboards.com photos of your SKX. We will help you with a board.
@@firewiresurfboards I love all my firewire! but I have an SKX and a Cymatic that with little time of use appeared brown spots. I believe it is some reaction of the resin. very sad
The wide point is more forward and the tail rocker is elevated. This may make the board feel to you like it goes faster more quickly when you get to your feet. Especially if you are a front footed surfer. And the elevated tail rocker helps it pivot more tightly in the pocket. Lastly, the outside channels of the quad inside single concave extend further forward into the board, all the way in front of your front foot. this helps the board cary speed in flat sections more easily, and it works especially well in waves that alternate between steep and flat sections.
I reckon the raked fins were Powerdrive fins, otherwise Timmy would’ve mentioned if they were Tomos new Future Hatchet quad, as Firewire wouldn’t endorse Mark Thomson
They're not any kind of hatchet fin at all. 😉 We spoke with Kelly and got a photo fo the fins he and Timmy were testing. They're top secret at this point and designed by a well known surfboard designer, but that's unfortunately all we can share right now. Kelly has been experimenting with them for a long time.
Timmy is on another level too. He rides so many different boards now, that he really dials in what boards to give a go. Keep up the great work.
He's one of our favorites for sure.

He's one of the most perpetually stoked and happy people we know. One of the best travel companions you could ask for.

The future of surfing has GOT to be getting higher scores for riding switch foot. Barrels switch foot, big turns switch foot, airs switch foot....

Could be! Thats some good detective work.

It doesnt matter what board this guy would ride....he surfs as good as Slater
Surfing with the GOAT must be awesome
To Timmy's point, it can kind of be intimidating also. 😉

@@firewiresurfboards does the yellowing affect performance at all or is this all cosmetic?
How does it compare to the sci fi 1.0?

They are both riding 5'6 stock dimensions, exactly as you'd find them at surf shops. 5'6 x 18 5/8 x 2 5/16.
Both wearing beanies
