- On today's podcast, Ashley Thompson and Dan Novak host the show while Ashley tells listeners what they are going to hear.
First, Bryan Lynn has a report on U.S. trade policy affecting China.
The U.S. administration announced plans to increase tariffs on $18 billion worth of Chinese imports. The goods facing new taxes include electric vehicles, computer chips, batteries, critical minerals, medical products, steel and aluminum. The announced tariffs would appear to help industries including the American carmakers.
Next, Gena Bennett has a story about the observed birthday of the Buddha. Prince Siddhartha, or the Buddha, is thought to have been a historical person who lived about 2500 years ago. Buddha means the “enlightened one.” Different Asian cultures observe the birthday on several different dates and with different ceremonies.
After that, Dan Novak has a story about teacher autonomy on the Education Report. A top Florida public school credits its students’ high test scores to the creativity its teachers are permitted in the classroom. The superintendent of the school calls the teachers his “secret sauce.” Some school administrators say letting teachers find ways to teach students has good results.
Following the report, Ashley and Dan have a discussion about what autonomy is. Dan notes that a study from the state of New York teacher job satisfaction is tied to a feeling of autonomy.
Finally, John Russell uses a report on how glow-in-the-dark corals evolved over long periods of time to discuss the meaning and use of the word "determine" on Lesson of the Day. Dan Friedell has the report on corals.
Then Ashley and Dan sign off.
