    The tasks weren't that fun, but as a casual player who isn't high level in the main game, I really enjoyed this gamemode as it let me try out everything runescape had to offer! What bothered me that hasn't been much talked about is the curve (or lack of) of sages renown. You go from scrambling for a few renown to unlock a skill to having nothing to use them for quite suddenly. Having the costs go up as you unlock things would have made the decisions more impactful.

    I'm still so salty I missed out on League 1, I love Kourend. Leagues 3 is neat with the mix and match playstyle but without the area restriction aspect it can feel a bit too much like normal. For me learning obscure ways to do things due to area restrictions was a big part of the appeal.
    I would absolutely play something like a redo of leagues 1 with different relics or gimmicks, simpler than the current system but keeping that area lock. IDK how long they could keep that going though.

    What I loved about Trailblazer League was that you could take one look at someone's character and know which relics and areas they chose. Your journey and your progress was represented by your decisions. I was rocking Ahrims with Infinity Boots, Ancient Staff and a Malediction Ward in Trailblazer, and that told someone exactly what they needed to know about my journey.

    Great video J1m. My own burnout definitely had the UI as a big reason but also a couple other things:
    1. Fragment acquisition and leveling were incredibly inconsistent. The fishing, cooking, mining, thieving, and farming fragments leveled up quite quickly via doing the skills; miscellaneous fragments were pretty frustrating to get but still seemed to come in fairly consistently, while crafting and herblore fragments seemed incredibly rare. (I didn't get all the crafting fragments until 97 crafting and got zero herblore fragments by level 80.) And given that a crafting fragment was required for T3 absolute unit, which seems to be the meta for a lot of endgame content, it contributed heavily to burnout.
    2. Defender grind. The drop rates for non-dragon defenders were, for some reason, not reduced during either Leagues 2 or 3. This led to the cyclops room being absolutely packed during the first week or so of leagues (a friend of mine said this was the case even at 4AM his time on a server in his country.) Consistent cyclops kills were all but impossible, and the grind felt like it took longer than it usually does during the main game despite the relics speeding the actual kills up. The last thing you want in a temporary, sped-up game mode is for a fairly necessary grind to feel longer than normal.
    3. Having to unlock skills did not feel good. It was novel for a few hours, then it just felt like a slog. And by the time all the skills were unlocked, I had little motivation to do the tasks for those skills as I'd already grinded out four 99's for what felt like pittances.

    • @tomdragon3881
      @tomdragon3881 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Defender grind was absolutely awful, you're right about that. The skill unlocks were a neat idea but in reality due to requirements, it basically just left me spinning around like, gotta get herblore to unlock this quest, which unlocks this other thing which unlocks an efficient way to train crafting and so on. It was really nice that they halved the cost of skills eventually but it seemed a bit late for my experience.

  • @TheMegatuz

    I loved Trailblazer and it's still my favourite Leagues out from the 3. Twisted league felt very slow and cumbersome and Shattered league then felt too large to take in within restricted time. With the fragments I could do most activities more efficiently than in Trailblazers. But I didn't like that because I CHOSE what I wanted to do efficiently. But in Leagues III it feels like if I don't do everything, I feel left behind. It's an Ironman mode after all where you have to do everything by yourself rather than focus on 1 thing and then buy the other stuff what you didn't want to do.
    But eventually I played Shattered Relics for 20k points. I only did tasks which were not-too grindy like 25m farming or 150 contracts. I mostly did tasks where you had to beat a boss once, within certain time limit or with a challenge like Vorkath without being hit by special for 5 kills. Those were relying to me rather than to the game in terms of RNG based tasks = unique drops. And lastly, I didn't like to grind same boss for hundreds of kills just for the points - which I wouldn't even enjoy to do.
    I hope next leagues will be more fascinating than this one. Jagex should take notes what went wrong and how to implement Trailblazers kind of league again without repeating old scheme of area restrictions.

  • @mangyangghos
    @mangyangghos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I think a few things were mildly problematic, and they all combined to make it a slog.
    First, 3x drop rate just isn't enough for such a short game mode. Going dry isn't uncommon, and going 600 kills on bandos before getting tassets was truly awful. Going over 700 kc on demonics for my first zenyte was worse.
    Second, the unlock system was really unpleasant, honestly. Parts of it weren't bad, but especially the pre-nerf costs for skill unlocks were crazy. And then once you had everything, you'd just stack up hundreds of renown with nothing to spend it on. I thought renown was a far more interesting incentive to do tasks than just the league points, but without anything to spend renown on (like, maybe buy some conveniences like guaranteed minimum clue steps or something?) it fell way short of its potential.
    Third, I just don't know if fragments are gonna be it, man. Especially the imbalance of them, where melee fragments and relic sets were just objectively better than their ranged and mage counterparts. The constant switching was tedious, and having to try to figure out which fragments and which sets to use was not fun at all. I would've much preferred a system more like their previous relic system, which definitely needed iteration but wasn't terrible. This one just feels bad to use.
    There are other issues, but these three were really big for me personally.

    • @hishammohamed1446
      @hishammohamed1446 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Me and a lot of buddies were talking about the droprate issue. Each of us went 3x the adjusted drop rates of several key items and during each of our respective dry streaks we all considered just quitting the game. This also happened last league where people I knew quit after doing hundreds of kills for something like a bandos hilt just to go dry. I really think they should add some kind of grace kc or something that limits just how unlucky you can get. I currently am at 34k points after spending almost a week and a half doing 400 corrupted gauntlet kc just to not get the BoFa and now be so behind everyone else. Not saying its unfair cause i did get lucky elsewhere but that grind almost made me not want to play the rest of the game mode.

    The whole issue with the relics is insane - it's exactly as J1mmy says, I can't move from one grind to another without having to sit there and think through my combinations. It just makes you not want to move to another activity.
    I've been casually playing the past 2 leagues, but this is the only one I stopped halfway through due to boredom. Yeah I have 99s and 25mils, but I wasn't having fun - I got those because I didn't want to go swap out relics.

    1.) Bad UI.
    2.) Most the tasks were boring.
    3.) Information overload.
    Trailblazers was amazing. Only downside in my opinion was how punishing it was for not selecting OP locations/relics. Perhaps replicate an experience similar to trailblazers. Give some forgiveness. Such as being able to unlock an item (via some challenge, grind, or milestone) to be able reselect a relic. Still punishing for not choosing an optimal path, but not a league-experience crusher.

    I know I'm unique, but as a person who started OSRS 2 weeks before Leagues 3 by coincidence, this has been absolutely perfect for me. It basically skyrockets me to endgame and lets me learn about training every single skill without the thousands of hours required to get there in normal RS. My main account has most of my skills at 1, and I didn't even know what most of them did going into Leagues, and now I'm going for a Leagues max cape. Not to mention the tasks forced me to familiarize myself with a ton of content I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Again, I'm a unique case, but this has been an incredible way to actually learn the game on an accelerated timescale.

    Although you seemed to forget that the exact same player dropoff happened for leagues 2. I was there until the very end, and the last few weeks everything was absolutely barren.
    Also, permanent relic choices were extremely stressful and created this unhealthy mindset of "oh god I've ruined my account" when a player regretted the decision down the line. You know how you said people had meltdowns when trying to optimize set effects? I had the same thing trying to pick which relic to unlock in trailblazer. Not to mention most people just copied a streamer meta anyway, killing any uniqueness. I think the shattered relic system is the best, and things like area restrictions could be built on top of that.
    You're 100% right about the UI though, shoutouts to the preset gigachad

  • @Kieranndav

    Definitely something to be said (from a content standpoint) for the end game of shattered being very homogenous, while trailblazer was so different for each series

  • @wescoast36
    @wescoast36 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very well said, you nailed the most important reasons.
    One thing I would add though is the point system. Early-mid game was fun, but I feel like everything became unlocked WAY too fast. So many skills could be bought, and you could make those same renown points back in less than 20min of doing the skill you just spent them on, which made it feel a lot less rewarding since there was virtually no drawback.
    And then came the update that halved the point cost for most of the unlocks. It didn't take long for me to reach the point of "well i'll probably never kill this boss in this league, but I have an ungodly amount of unspent points so I'll just unlock it anyways", and most unlocks ended up feeling hollow
    In less words, why was trailblazer better than shattered relics?
    skill tree > a clusterfuck of clunky mix n match buffs

    In this next league i want to try killing bosses, i want to try gauntlet, TOA, zulrah, all bosses i wouldn't manage to because i'm bad at the game, but with the help of the relics i might have a chance.
    I would just love if they made a relic that makes the player ignore PvM mobs overhead prayers when hitting them, just so the bosses are easier for me since i won't need to keep changing gear, yeah, it would be very OP, but hey, ain't that the whole point of the leagues?

    Questing was the target of an unneeded nerf in Leagues III imo. As an ironman, quests are an integral part of getting early xp but Leagues III made quest reward xp unobtainable unless you had the skill unlocked. This guts the early game options. You should still get xp from the quest even if the skill isn't unlocked because you're not doing the skill itself. No one wants to come back as a med-high level account and do tedious quests for xp that doesn't matter. Opting to instead "buy" quest completion later on doesn't make up for it. You're being prohibited from playing like an ironman and then later being punished for playing the way they want you to play.

  • @w00tyd00d

    The big thing that ended hindering my overall enjoyment of the league was actually when they cheapened all of the skill unlock costs. I definitely think them reducing the KC tasks of certain bosses and even reducing the cost to unlock bosses was a good move, but I thought the original skill costs were actually pretty good. It made having to decide which skill to unlock next and actual weighted decision and not just "ahh so what do I feel like doing next?"
    After they refunded all of the points, I had 200+ SR that I had no idea what to spend on. I only needed 3-4 skills left to unlock, so I just unlocked them and then played for like another week and then quit. I felt like all of my decisions up until that point were moot and it took away a lot of the satisfaction about actually acquiring those skills (you know, the actual _real_ restriction we had this league lol). I dunno, I think it was fun idea in theory but definitely could've been executed a lot better.

      @ijustownyouall 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was about tp type something similiar. Reducing the renown costs was what made it feel so incredibly similiar to the normal game. The best part of each leagues is the figuring out what to do when and planning ahead. There was some of that at the start. What quests to do when for not missing out on exp rewards, which skills to unlock when, what do you need first,etc.
      Without that aspect the entire concept of the league was dead

    Meta standing for "most effective tactic available" is a backronym, it's not the actual source of the term. Meta is simply a prefix that means "about" or "around". In gaming, the term was originally metagame, the part of the game which isn't explicit in the mechanics but rather is about them, i.e. the strategy, which got shortened to meta over time.

    I've played every league, and I feel like this has been the best one. Sure there's a few problems but it's not as if the other ones didn't have flaws. I think you just need to be organized at the start to know what to rush and where the most points are gonna be profited per time spent, which I'll admit might have been hard with the way the ui was laid out

  • @Meoiswa
    @Meoiswa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Shattered Relics was massively let down by both its UI and arbitrary Task selection.
    Don't get me wrong, everything they did was both ambitious and impressive, but it just did way too much.
    It should've been either a skills locked grind-a-thon with tons of XP bonuses, or a progression-restricting task-completion-a-thon. Both combined was just a nightmare, and it was really easy to corral yourself into a very bad path that got you stuck in the very early tiers.

    I remember scrolling through that task list so damn much, then give up and go to the wiki, which has them slightly more organized. I kinda gave up when I was 4 weeks in, trained some random skill and randomly got points for a task I never knew existed. And yeah, I often based my decision of what to do next on what relics I'd already equipped so I didn't have to change them every goddamn time, just to forget something. Needless to say, I didn't do many farm runs. Oh, and I took a 2 week break in those 4 weeks. Now I'm back in the main game, just because it's less tedious.

    Something I would like to add, I was very big in the RuneScape Discord and Reddit, and the biggest feedback throughout Trailblazer, besides RNG BAD. was the constant FOMO of picking your regions and relics. Many people asked for respecs or just a full repeat of Trailblazer to try other paths, so, we sort of brought this upon ourselves.

    As someone who has still not actually ever made it to “late-game” in osrs, I opted not to try leagues because I want the first time I experience high level content (eventually!) to be in “vanilla” osrs. I felt worried that I would set myself up with false expectations about how easy/hard different bosses are when you fight using all the cool relics.
    One thing I don’t like that much about rs3 is double exp/bonus exp time-limited events that encourage players to play an unhealthy/unreasonable amount of time per day, this is another reason that I was not interested in leagues, it seemed like the gamemode would encourage me to go sweaty mode to get to all the content, which just doesn’t work for me. That being said I absolutely enjoyed watching some youtubers have fun speedrunning/playing leagues!
    Also, it’s worth mentioning, for those who haven’t tried rs3 in recent years, I think if you enjoyed aspects of leagues such as auto-banking, you might appreciate some aspects of rs3. There are divination (and a divination skill!) items called signs of portents (if I remember correctly, it’s been a minute) that can be equipped in the ammo slot and used for this purpose. And the teleport system in leagues is kinda like the rs3 lodestone network.

    I'm a very casual on and off osrs player. I played the hell out of the last two leagues. The problem I faced with this one was that the very start felt difficult for a kind of nooby player. Last season you started with an OP gathering profession, I looked up a task, "ya I can level this up real quick and do that" this league, being throttled by skills and having a slower ramp up. I found myself getting frustrated and doing more googling on how to do this and that rather than just playing the game.

  • @PraytoTank

    I thought leagues 3 was a blast off the start, being able to switch between different relics and not having that feeling of “I wish I chose this relic for this tier instead” was amazing. But it was extremely tedious having to switch between them all the time. Not being area locked was great for the same reason, but with every other decision you had to make throughout the league in terms of efficiency (what skills to unlock when, what quests to auto complete, which bosses you should unlock first) it just felt like you had way too much on your mind. Gaining xp in relics was extremely tedious as well, I didn’t even want to waste time training herblore until I had unlocked level 3 mixologist because of how much easier it would become so I’d mine pure ess for 5 hours. And the relics being RNG based meant you would sometimes get level 80-90 before even getting the relic for skills like herblore and crafting. All in all, good concept but a lot of room for improvement.

    I absolutely agree.
    My experience so far:
    When I started, I had no idea what to unlock with renown. I was just like "well there are trees around, might aswell unlock wc" But then it turns out that its best to read the tasks on wiki to see that some skills were more rewarding than the others. So unlocking all skills and tier 7 took me too long.
    So then I focused on maxing. Idk even why, because I maxed in trailblazer and it was nothing new. But I guess I wanted all the skill restrictions to be gone(shortcuts, diaries, etc).
    Now I have no bloody idea what to do. I see people are getting 25m in skills because its easy, fast and points. But I also see most tasks are still going towards pvm(also best set effects favor melee but not mage or range to the same extent). And I either have to pvm like hundreds of kills and get a specific drop. Which to me burns me out even faster. So im barely 30k points, in trailblazer I had 48k. I dont think I will get close to 48k this time and I will not get a dragon cup ever, but dragon cup is also unreachable because of irl stuff, cant play 12h+ every single day.
    Overall I did enjoy it in between when I was maxing and not focusing on points but now there are many bosses I dislike and dont wanna go get drops or kc. So maybe I will just skill to 25m or something.
    Anyway great video with good points, keep up the good work!
    Also thanks for manscaped. I think like a year or 2 ago, because of your videos I bought at the time the lawn mower 2.0 package or something. Its great.

    When they first announced the league at summer summit I thought that the unlocking of things would be limited, for example you can only unlock a certain amount of bosses/skills, not all of them, which might have made for some more interesting choices on this skills front, not sure about the bosses? I do agree though, the fragments are what exhausted me in the end, just too much to manage constantly and too many different systems to keep track of. I think at one point I finished my current goal and just the thought of working out what to do next was too much so i went back to the main game.
    I hope the next league returns to the formula of the first 2 with just a few really impactful decisions, rather than loads of less impactful decisions.

The best part for me was powering through all the old gameplay and quests I did when I was younger, and mega dopamine from getting GWD items and other boss drops. Really it was just a fast-paced nostalgia trip from me. I broke the top 8000 on the leader board with rune tier, without the last recall relic. I still enjoyed myself immensely. Boy did leagues 3 not interest me though, I'd come back for a leagues 2.5 or something.

  • @Sinchu9
    @Sinchu9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the biggest issue with shattered relics was how much of a pain early renown was to get.
    The first 5 odd skills unlocked were the hardest because you had to consider what you wanted to be able to do now vs later, then they just made them all dirt cheap which meant basically everybody could unlock everything that day.
    Imo they should have made ranking up give a nice dolop of Renown and keep the prices as was.
    The whole 'unlock content but you can get all content' thing was probably to prevent the issue of picking a bad relic at the start and basically ruining your chances at a high rank, or relics being changed or balanced *cough* area locked clues *cough* which was massively unfair to people who already locked in a choice.
    But this made an issue of this league basically being "Timed ironman, but you have 16x xp, 3x drops and you're basically god if you use relics", it's not hugely interesting outside of the wack stuff you can do with some relics like AFK melee fight caves and 10 second Zulrah kills, and it has the issue of too much choice. Trailblazer worked because unlocking a new area gave you lots to do but never too many possibilities, with this league it's very easy to get overwhelmed and not know what t odo next, I know I had that problem early on.
    I'm happy because I'm burnt out on the grinding aspect of runescape rather than the content so experiencing it but faster is nice. Theperfect League for me would be trailblazer but fragment relics, the strongest parts of both leagues I've played.

    loved the video! this league was a great example of how important good UX/UI is to facilitating game design, especially for a game that values efficiency of all forms, and how important it is to consider UX when designing an experience. you can see a similar thing in wow with freely changing specs/talents and how they had to consider making these changes as easy as possible on players with action bars being saved, allowing more places to change talents/introducing the consumable that lets you change them wherever, etc. and a common social situation where you're even more pressured to adhere to the meta or pressured to be flexible because it became so easy to change. that being said, wow's "issues" were pretty minor compared to this league's UX issues!
    also, just wanted to correct/inform a small thing in the video since it's a common misconception and i am a huge nerd that cares:
    "most effective tactic available" is a backronym, actually. meta is a shortening of metagame, which was first applied to modern gaming like 20 years ago from a magic the gathering designer, talking about the metagame as everything to do with the layer right above the actual game rules and logic--pre-game decisions, post-game takeaways, community discussions, strategies and tactics that are applied to the game, etc. and eventually this term became more and more about the communities ideas of how the game should be played, rather than all the ways it can be played, because that's a pretty useful term to have
