Ha ha, these are always fun to do. I'm with you on the '53 Berra. Some people go gaga over that as we know, but I don't find it a flattering image at all. Same with the Monte Irvin. In fact, the '53 Topps set, as iconic as it is, is really hit or miss throughout. There are some great images like the Paige and the Mize, but then there are some other ones that can look a little creepy actually. I like Enos' card. From all accounts, he was one tough dude. Phil's '48 is one of the first "in action" cards! Get with it! Lol
I know I had fun making it, though it does make me feel nervous "crapping" on some cards I know people love. There are definitely some 53 Topps image where the artist was brilliant, and then others...not so much. Well that Enos shot does make it look like someone you wouldn't want to mess with. "In Action" card. LOL It does seem like Phil enjoyed working with the photographers on a few of his "in action" cards.
John, my friend, you were picking on some of my favorite glorious cards! 🤣🤣🤣 for the most part, though, we are in agreement. This shows the benefits of collecting the way you do, where a collector can pick and choose based on the card image, etc. Fantastic palate cleansing at the end! Way to tantalize Dylan with those well centered stunners! 😂👊
Adam, I did have a moment's pause knowing I was going to be dumping on some of your favorite cards. Ultimately, I decided to push through. Glad you at least enjoyed the ending. LOL
Excellent video John. I really enjoyed it. Not every card will be a Rembrandt. // My suggestions for future episodes on this topic: 1973 Reggie Jackson (it's painful to see this pose) & 1969 Joe Morgan (with the UFO just above his head).
Thanks George. Since I am going chronologically based off my card picks for each of the players, it will be a while til I reach Reggie and Joe, but we shall see.
John, Great idea for a video. I look forward to additional episodes. Keep it going. My vote for top card would be 1958 Brooks Robinson. That card is pretty horrendous. 😂
Literally picked up that Campanella card, love the up close detail to it. One of the best things about cards is that each one is open to their own interpretation!
Well clearly this was targeted directly at you as being a fool for liking the card. LOL No seriously... I am happy for anyone who is happy with any card they add to their collection and that they enjoy. If you all liked the exact same things as me, it would make it more expensive. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I love the ‘54 Bowman Campanella. There’s something almost poignant about it. He was injured in 1954, between two MVP seasons, & had to have surgery to remove bone chips from his hand. To me, this is a realistic depiction of a catcher - when life was not always a cakewalk.
Love this idea. I respect your pics. Some of these cards I love - you know the Yogi but also the 52 Doby and 53 Irving. Love those. But that ‘48 Rizzuto is one of the worst. There are a couple other stand outs to me. Let’s see if any of them show up on part 2. Great stuff.
Well i already know your blind alex 😂😂😂😂😂😂 JK but its freaking hilarious how are eyes see these so differently 😂😂. Somehow we both love alot of the same cards but than completely disagree with others 😅😅. Freaking love this hobby
Thanks for the support Alex. I seem to be getting the most pushback on those 53 cards. I guess I've reached the point where it doesn't bother me if people on the internet call me an idiot. LOL
Couldn't agree more on the MP & CO Larry Doby. The '55B Kiner I have always thought looked weird. '61 & '62T had a lot of TERRIBLE cards like Ashburn. They did my boy Killebrew dirty in '61. I actually really like the '53T Irvin. Fun series!
I would question the sanity of anyone who likes the 49 Doby. Exactly. It does look weird. I see what you mean on the Killebrew. Could his forehead be any more prominent? We can't always be right together, I guess... Sometimes you're wrong. LOL Thanks Jake!
Great episode...obviously the '54 Bowman Campanella, not Topps...a couple others like this include the '58 Ford looking ill and the '58 BRob looking seriously ill.
To each their own. I prefer my Yogi cards to look like Yogi Berra, not Yogi Zoolander. The Irvin looks like him but is definitely an "interesting" facial expression. Thanks for watching
The 53 Irvin is a perfectly nice card! Besides that I agree. The 65 Roberts looks like he just ate a big bowl of spicy chili and the picture was taken at the exact 'uh oh' moment he realized he needed to get to a bathroom--and fast.
Well the entitlement of the typical Yankee fan (as if their team is just supposed to win it all every year), can always use getting knocked down a few pegs. LOL Thanks man!
The 1966 Baltimore Oriole's Frank Robinson card shows him cap less and he appears to be wearing a Cincinatti Reds jersey uniform. I understand he had been traded (Reds to Orioles) during the off season. It's not an unflattering photo but doesn't seem to do justice for a player who went on to win the 1966 AL MVP and Triple Crown. His 1967 Topps card (photo picture) looks so much better.
Gave a video like. I like the 53 Monte and 54 Campy. Those two speak to me. The others not so much. Great cards at the end. Hope you have a fun Labor Day weekend!
The MP & Co Doby 🤦🏻♂️ what the heck!? Worst of the bunch. I do like the ‘53 Monte Irvin and I know exactly where that image is from. I touched on it at the end of my latest video. Fun stuff, John
That does seem like one of the worst cards ever made. I saw your comment on the Irvin and immediately went and watched your video. Just making it back to my comments now. Lol Thanks for watching and commenting.
I do love vintage cards myself, though I do like to have some fun identifying cards that look better or worse than others. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
Herman Munster is a great comparison. Yeah, I had to include the Doby even though it's not a mainstream card. I think my new name for the 53 Berra is Yogi Zoolander.
Trivia question: From 1947 when baseball’s talent pool practically doubled until 1960, the last year of 16 teams, what player hit the most homers in anyone of those seasons? He’s in this video.
Since Ralph Kiner's back issues knocked him out by the mid 50s, the answer would have to be Yogi Berra. Thanks for watching and providing the trivia question.
Everyday is a great day to talk about baseball cards! You nailed these cards John! Of course beauty in the eye of the beholder but you definitely picked some ugly cards. I do live the 53 Topps Berra though but compared to how he really looks they made him look like a super model!😂 I look forward the rest of these!
That whole M.P & Co set is hideous! The 1943 Hornsby is awful. Some big rookies in that set but will gladly take the second cards. I love the '52 Doby - first one I disagree. I like the '55 bowman Kiner shows how huge his paws are. Always thought Roberts looked like he was on a bender on his 1965. The '58 Lemon looks like he was sitting on his hat and quickly put it on. WOW I love the '53 Irvin and it is on my want list. Really disagree on this one. I don't mind Campy's face but the odd helmet on the '54 Bowman has always bothered me. Fun topic.
Definitely agree that the MP & Co sets are horrible. The collecting hobby would not be the lesser if they were erased from history. People having different opinions on something like this does make it more fun to talk about it. But I just can't help it when some people have a different opinion than mine and that they are wrong. LOL Thanks Brad for both watching and commenting.
Oh my gosh John you must be blind !! You chose some of my all time favorites. 53’ Yogi an absolutely beautiful card. 52’ Doby !! 53’ topps Monte wtf seriously one of the greatest cards ever made. Man I just dont understand what your eyes see 😂😂😂😂.
That Larry Doby is horrible. lol Hmm, I like the '53 Berra & Irvin. Topps was terrible at times. Ashburn is fine example of that. I know the Brooks R. from 1957 is coming right?
Yeah that 49 Doby is an abomination. I figured you might be a fan of the 53 cards. Topps was terrible. We shall have to see what card I pick for Brooks. I think he might be slated for Episode 3.
Agree on all John. I used to own the ‘54 B Campy, but dumped it a couple years ago in favor of the ‘51 B / ‘52 Wheaties. Keep up the brilliant negativity! 😂

While my order feels random, it is based chronologically on the year of card I've chosen for each player in my 1 card of each Hall of Famer project. And yes, the 58 Brooks is infamously bad.
