Man I CANNOT WAIT for this game. Just a thing to mention, around the 33:30 mark you mention the disruptor being able to junk a card from the trade row. Just looked up the rules and on page 31 it says, much like Imperium, you cant junk cards with tokens on them.
Been loving my time so far with the solo mode of this, to the point where I’m thinking of doing two separate video for this one, one with the botless cadet training mode and one with the AI mode, which is nearly unheard of on my channel!
I for one pre-ordered this game due to the Solo aspect of the game. Imperium Horizons/Legends/Classics is 2nd in my top 5 games of all time. There are many games my wife an I play together but the the heavier games is not her cup of tea. It's nice to have solo options when I can just play while have a sporting game in the background.
Star Trek Frontiers is another great Star Trek game (it’s a retheme of Mage Knight), really feels like you are exploring space. Will probably give this one a try also, since the Imperium system is also one of my top card games (that I play solo due to its complexity, lol).
Rahdo, I loved this video. I had only heard minimal things about the game until now but you have me convinced on it. I don’t know how I’m going to get this here to Japan but I think I need to do a video of it for my channel. I think there will be a lot of overlap with this and Star Trek Adventures and Captain’s Log players (maybe especially CL players). Awesome video! Thanks for sharing!
Based on play and theme this is a buy for me. I would only play it solo. Crystal Dax changered her name to Dax after divorce, so likely slightly more of a Trek fan but You both have great love of it.
Preordered! You always do a great job of highlighting what a game offers a player. I was in for the IP really but this pushed me over. My only concern is the static goals for captains in both easy and hard. Having a few more to choose from each could have gone a long way. But maybe it was just too hard to balance.
This looks like a good brain burner. Maybe it's just my adhd brain, but looking at a bunch of connection points that can weave into a tapestry of victory gives me joy.
I also have been very excited over the release of this game. This was a great overview of it with well voiced pros and cons. So i'm definitely still on board. One interesting thing is, I keep hearing about how create Horizons has improved Imperium. Having already bought the first two sets, I am a bit wary of having to buy more to get the improvements.
well if you buy horizons, you're also doubling the number of civilizations to play with, so i don't think you'll regret it at all. plus you don't need to buy horizons for the 'sped up' mode, etc. only if you want to do the new trade route gameplay :)
Diplomacy is always harder than just killing so avoiding attack actions reflects real effort. I love action selection on a cards and with this I think it will beat Imperium but let's wait and see. Thanks for playthrough.
My ranking of Star Trek. 1. TNG 2. DS9 3.TOS 4.Voyager 5. Strange New Worlds 6. Enterprise 7. Picard 8. Discovery Haven’t seen the animations as I can’t feel invested in the people because they are cartoons.
I really do feel like any fan of the entire franchise owes Lower Decks at least 2 episodes. It may be an animated comedy, but it really feels like the most earnest and "Star Trek-y" of the modern shows. Everyone involved in making it clearly understands the assignment, and that love comes through in almost every aspect.
wow, didn't see this coming, a Star Trek game with characters / ships from various series, and deck building??? ordered it from Miniature Market (only one that will ship it to France) ; let's hope they do expansions with new captains, characters, planets ... but possibly it will clog the game and make it difficult to get the objectives. Also varied objectives, just not the 3 on the captain would be welcome. Your knowledge of Trek is great, though I prefer DS9, TOS and TNG, and not much Enterprise and hate Voyager.
If you havent played Voidfall (also from David and Nigel), you should check it out even if its just for coop or solo play. I think it's actually better coop than it is competitive.
yeah, taking them from the stardate card is SUPER hard to remember... i might keep all of the other tokens in the box so as to not accidentally grab them. But jen and i were playing it right :)
I am with you as a Star Trek fan who began watching Star Trek in the 1960s (maybe just a little before you). Since you are such a big Star Trek fan, I don't understand why you don't keep it for solitaire play when you are in the mood to just mull over Star Trek (how can you not keep one of your top 20 games of all time?). As an aside, I don't know if I would brag about the cell phone being inspired by Star Trek (The cell phone has done the world a lot of ill). However, Thanks for the review, and which of the Imperium games is your favorite (sounds like Horizons)?
the only reason not to go straight to imperium horizons would be that there are some slightly easier to play civs in the first two. but you get so much in the horizons box i'd still go with that and then supplement later
I think the complexity has basic ensured it won't have a widespread critical success sadly. Voidfall was similar where it had almost too much complexity. I think if work was made to simplify and streamline design you still could have had alot more meaningful deicisons but more accessible and quicker to play.
@@rahdoi'm actually surprised that you put discovery above next generation. Since you enjoy carebear boardgaming wise. 😊 To each their own of course. Just surprised. 😊
LOVED the first two seasons of discovery (and the last 2 seasons of enterprise) so i'm mostly judging on them. next gen is fine, but it lacks energy a lot of the time. i grew up on original trek in the 70s, so when nextgen came around in college and my 20s, i never quite connected it with. still like it though :)
Richard, does this also mean that the solo game is too complex for you to keep this game? Or is it just too difficult to make space for a solo-only game?
Hi Rahdo, I don't have a private way to message you, but are you OK healthwise? You look like you've lost a lot of weight. I hope everything is OK, please look after yourself ❤ Warmest regards, Salman From UK
It’s supposed to be a training simulation being used in the 32nd century that is training new recruits. So everything being mixed up actually makes sense thematically!
In the end, Rahdo decides to keep the game, but never open the box, but builds a shrine to the game to honor Lord Turczi. It will the only game Rahdo kept that he lights candles to. 🥷
I approve of your shorter variant (with the bottom of the draw pile thing).

I've been watching you since 2013, and I just want to say I am so happy for you that your marriage with Jen has kept up! :)
Ive been gagging to get my preorder for months! So nice to see you playing this!
Loved this video and hearing your backstory and love for Trek. Looks like a game worth picking up just to appreciate the system.

I'm super exfited to get my pre-order. Enjoyed the bit i played at GenCon
Happy to gab about Trek some day! I bet we could clear a room with the deep nerdery. :P

yup, she's the other bg media person i was obliquely referring to! :)

Well bear in mind you're probably only going to get 1 of them done in a given session... :)
The "brain" card you noted came from an episode of ST:Discovery.
This looks like a good brain burner. Maybe it's just my adhd brain, but looking at a bunch of connection points that can weave into a tapestry of victory gives me joy.

that is a very nice thematic point! :)

not dilithium chips. they're called isolinear chipa. ;)
thanks for the video.
ds9 can move and has. it can not warp though. Just watched the series. game looks interesting.
yup, it's going to take Q or Apollo or something to get it to warp to Risa :)
55:45 you said activating a ship doesnt use an action but "taps" it. You used one of Jen's actions for that activation.
If you havent played Voidfall (also from David and Nigel), you should check it out even if its just for coop or solo play. I think it's actually better coop than it is competitive.
i have to admit i never looked at it as a co-op. thanks for the heads up! :)
One correction for the Klingon Subtitles: you always take glory tokens from the stardate card. You were taking them from the supply.
This would also speed up the game like you were trying to figure out
yeah, taking them from the stardate card is SUPER hard to remember... i might keep all of the other tokens in the box so as to not accidentally grab them. But jen and i were playing it right :)
@@rahdo yeah, I keep them in the bag, only to refill the stardate card. Putting them on the table is asking for trouble.
do you live in the desert? or a trailer? So cool the view from the window!
we're in our RV for a few months living and filming on the road. this was shot in the middle of the catavina desert in baja, mexico :)

yup :)

lower decks :)

@@rahdo TNG in 8th place! My god! That series changed my life :(
WOW! This game looks good but, unlike you Rahdo, I don’t like game that are 2 max players as they won’t get a lot of playtime for me.
well you should probably check out imperium classics/legends/horizons since that's the game system this is based on, and it supports 4 players :)
@ REALLY!? I thought that series was only 2 player! I have skipped buying them for the same reason. Would love the Star Trek theme though.
Richard, does this also mean that the solo game is too complex for you to keep this game? Or is it just too difficult to make space for a solo-only game?
yeah, i simply don't play solo. but if i did, this would be my game of the year hands down! :)

hi, thanks for the concern. yes i've lost about 2.5 stone from around april, but it was on purpose :)

“My most anticipated day ever!”
Incorporating all the named Trek characters is such a far stretch.. This nearly ruins ST Frontiers as well every time it gets on the table :(
