This is insane guitar playing. I'm not even sure I understand it, but if I had to analyze it, I'd say it's masterful and clearly virtuosic from a purely technical standpoint; he strings notes together with outrageous speed, but that's not even the best thing about it. The melodic sophistication is the what really stands out. Is he playing in a particular scale or mode? I don't even know. It is as if it comes from another dimension.

Alan Holdsworth. He looked like anyone's Dad. Completely unknown to almost everyone but man this guy really was one of the greatest exponents of the guitar; absolute mastery, fluidity and his chordal and melodic knowledge was 'off the scale'. I don't think the word virtuoso even comes close here, he was far better than that. You can just see this non stop stream of notes flowing through his head and somehow he manages to perfectly execute and communicate that through the instrument. Profoundly brilliant musician.

Everyone else plays with 7 note scales, but Allan made it seem like he was playing with 27 note scales. Lots of inspiration from a cat like that. That's why guitarists from Eddie Van Halen to Alex Lifeson said he was one of the best. He was like a chef who went around and found new spices to cook with. It is music for other musicians really and if you don’t play an instrument but enjoy it anyway then that’s even better. It’s a little sad that there are so many disparaging remarks. Allan was a guitar god. He came up with his own sax inspired sound and he did it really well. A unique and individual player like Robert Fripp or Jeff Beck (RIP). These are the kind of players that inspire and push music forward. We should thank them.

Alright, I'm since I'm tired of all these comments of "soulless shredding", I am going to tell you something most of you are too dense to comprehend. Music doesn't have soul. It never has and it never will! The " soul" from comes from the player within and if you look at Holdsworth he's playing this with "soul". Just look at him every time he plays a note his faces shows it!

It is that liquid sound that gets me about Holdsworth’s playing - it’s my favorite thing about him. Fusion (to quote someone on this board), does flummox me at times. Maybe it is oriented towards the mind, rather than the heart - so, I’ve tended to be alienated by it. At times it sounds like the given instrumentalist is practicing his/her scales!

In Holdsworth's case, he was like a great storm which although could be terrifying to listen was ultimately a blessing. Too young to hear him play in clubs, I would put my ear up against the boarded windows on Hollywood Blvd (also swatting away the crack heads in the late night) just to hear him play. Excelente performance de la banda, destacable la interpretación de Holdsworth, lamentablemente ya no esta con nosotros.

Allan played guitar like a jazz sax. In fact he was highly respected in modern jazz circles. Eddie Van Halen admired Allan so much he helped him get a record deal when Allan’s career was in the doldrums. Jazz is not just improvisation. It uses chord structures and scales most guitarists have never encountered or studied.

Impossible-seemming oversight of the fretboard, timing, precision, insane feel.. And the complete filigran-work on the execution of the theme switch 04:19.. Astonishing! Makes you realize they are not just fooling around, allthough it almost seem like they are on first listen. This is a patiently organized effort to get out the best fucking music..

I think he doesn’t even think about scales, modes, keys, or anything. To him, there are no rules… no boxes

Wow. This is where Messuggah got it's soloing inspiration from. Even the tone is similar.

+Brahmarakshas Official Tied to chair for 3 hours each day and forced to listen to jazz was what Thordendal did indeed state. There was a movement sensor on the chair and if yound Freddie moved, he would receive a short, sharp electric shock.

+ksw33n3y Really? Comparing Meshuggah solos to this? I'm not saying Meshuggah isn't as good - it's music, that would be silly. But in terms of the depth of thoeretical and technical facility involved in Allan's playing, we're talking about two very distant worlds.

***** This is a very good point, and I often say that being influenced by someone doesn't mean a need to sound anything like them. However, the high modality of the statement annoys me. Unless one of the guitarists specifically mentioned Holdsworth as an influence. Then I'd be totally wrong.

+Jordan J it may seem like a stretch but as someone who has studied meshuggah's music and is actively studying jazz, Thordendal actually has a lot of Holdsworth's proficiency. the note choice in fredriks solos seem a lot more random, but that is a deliberate choice because meshuggah's music calls for it. listen to "missing time" off of the "sol niger within" solo record and you'd be surprised, he can actually play over changes really well

+Austin Loman I never meant to express doubt of his ability, but how much of it he uses in general seems quite different to Holdsworth. I'm not saying one is better than the other - just that in general, it's a pretty ambiguous link in my opinion. Thanks!
