DB was very popular pianist in 1960-80th in USSR. The most exiting pianist. I never mist his concerts in my town. Have a lot of wonderful LPs. Also he's Daniel Barenboim father-in-law.
Il est surnaturel. Il est éternel. Je pleure d’hystérique comme ses notes exigées me tombaient un à un sur le cœur. Je les entends longtemps, longtemps.
It must have been confusing for the announcer. In the beginning he says that Bashkirov won the "premier prix". But later he said "deuxième grand prix". This is because in that year the jury had not awarded the first prize to anyone at all, but Marguerite Long was very much in favour of giving the first prize only to him, and she announced during the ceremony that as long as the Grand Prix bore her name she had the right to deal with it and she awarded it to him.
The 3 YT's here of his 1956 recording of several composers,1957 live Prokofieff sonata, and 1962 Schumann Fantasy recording give better measures of ,more complimentary to, his art. than his rather heavy-handed treatment of this concerto.IMHO only, of course. Many Thanks for this wonderful rarity !
My favorite “acrobat”. Often pretentious, mean-spirited. This man created a cult, a mystique. Very well-connected and can help your career along. That’s about it. A mediocrity.
In this century DB less performed, more teaching. He should stop playing in public at his advance age-pitiful. His performance in the 90th in San Francisco got poor review.
Seems that somebody had an stressful masterclass back in his student years... right Sergei?? ;) By the way, talking bad about death artists it's some of the most horrible things for a soul to do. Let the karma take care of you ;)
@@pianozone9798 never interacted with him personally but have heard many horror stories from students who were unfortunate enough to waste money on festivals to take lessons with this clown. He was often mean-spirited, incoherent, and downright humiliated many students. A master of self-promotion and generating a cult-following. That’s about it... This performance is not bad. I would not want to hear it again, however.
A wonderful pianist, I treasure a number of his recordings. Thank you.

that Fantasy is a marvel, thanks for letting us know about the 1950s recordings
His name is unfamiliar to me, but his list of students is impressive.

Second movement is super beautiful playing. Hardly mediocrity. Definitely no pretence like 99% of the performances of this piece

I don't see any mean spiritedness, pretentiousness or mediocrity in this performance Sergei. Quite the opposite here.
