Thanks for posting. Against my better judgement I am upgrading my lightly used 1520 to 4 GB and Win 7 Home Premium to give to a college student who is desperate for a laptop and can't afford one. My upgrade total was about $150 and paid for it all with Amazon gift cards that had piled up.
I have a Dell laptop that sat for awhile, and the battery is dead. If I buy a third party battery, are you sure it will charge? I'm afraid of the getting the 'system will not charge this battery error' on startup.
I agree that the layout of the Memory is harder to upgrade than most other Dells. I have 4 D630's and it can be quite annoying when you are upgrading ram and having to take off the keyboard to access the other module.
Hi Jack after upgrading to 4GB Ram is ur laptop running smoothly now, I have same 32bit OS Intel centrino duo 1gb Ram it's hell slow it's ddr2 can I upgrade it to 4gb Ram
It depends on what you'll be using the computer for. Getting 4GB of RAM for this system will cost you around $50. Windows 8.1 (regular OEM) will run around $100. You can get newer laptops for around $400-$600 with more power. What CPU does your 1520 have?
I also have a dell inspiron 1520 with windows Vista home 32 bit. If I was to install 2 2gig chips would it run as if I had 3gig or would windows 32 bit only use 2gig.
THANK YOU! very comprehensive video. i upgraded the HDD on mine and now am changing out the memory to 4gB I think my battery must be flakey as I can only get an hour or so with it (is this normal?) but I will change THAT too in time. Again very many thanks for posting this. Stay safe and be happy too. TJ the DJ.

Video not shooted properly.Work point is covered with hand at 2 times. How the first cover plate is removed is not clear & at last how to check the RAM, which button you are pressing is not clear. Other video is more better in less time
Thanks for posting. I am an accountant; it is the first time I opened a laptop. Your video made it so easy for me to upgrade ram.
Joe...join the club my friend! I have been mucking sbout with PCs for a generation and laptop upgrades still give me the heebie geebies!

Following your TH-cam video was great. Save me loads of money having a consultant do what was a very simple upgrade.
Hi I have same laptop 32bit OS Intel centrino processor can I upgrade to 4gb Ram ddr2, I have uninstalled vista & put windows 7 basic
That laptop should accept 4GB of RAM, but you'll need a 64-bit OS in order to make full use of that much memory.

I have an inspiron 1520. Is it worth upgrading the ram for window 8.1 or should I just stay on windows xp? Or get a new computer with window 8.1?

I have windows 8.1 pro now... Dual CPU T2330 @ 1.60GHZ WITH ONLY 2GB. 32BIT OPERATING SYSTEM, X64 BASED PROCESSOR
The computer is currently running Windows XP

It would only see around 3.25GB or RAM, minus graphics memory.
Cube Computer Channel. Ok cool that's better than 2gig so it's worth it. Thank you
How do I add more ram to my 1520 inspiron
By the steps shown in the video.
MANY THANX from Hamburg, Germany. Your informations helped me a lot to make good job ... upgrading ram from 1 to 4 GB. And it works fine.
I put my 4gb ram stick in but it says it has 512mb installed on it
So If I Wanted To Put 4 Gb In I Would Have To Have A 64bit Operating system Please Awnswer ASAP!
Yes, you'll need 64-bit.
ok thx

I'm very surprised at how pristine it looks, 1520's are about 5 years old.
5 years old? Now it’s 14 years old and it’s still a good looking laptop
