I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis of this painting, thank you! I discovered your channel through your discussion with Richard Grannon. I enjoy your "recovering academic" reference. 😎

Thankyou, great opportunity to view this painting again some 30 plus years later after studying it at university. Really enjoying these lectures.

Never thought I'd get sucked into an hr long video of art commentary😅 It feels like all the connections you make from books and similar artists culminate to a deep essential truth of human experience that you're shining a light on. I guess it's just meaningful and helpful for making sense of the world. So thanks!

Hi Brandon, thanks for endorsement. You’ve pinpointed what I’m trying to do with the various connections. The links I’m trying to make won’t always work but what’s the worst that can happen- people then get to see/hear some poorly connected but still great art/literature? Thanks again! Best, Paul.

I think the mirror is reality, the bar scene is how the barmaid would like to have been seen and the scrambling is the haze of memory over time.

Great commentary and analysis, Mr Taylor. You've now inspired me to pick up Bourdieu's 'Manet: A Symbolic Revolution'. Wonderful channel. I look forward to your upcoming video lectures.

I've got to say that this is certainly a method that allows for pleasant meditation upon the essences of beauty and life that I've much needed. Thank you for the peace this rumination has brought to a frazzled ignorant American, today...this, my new means of self-soothing: YAY!

I’m very glad you find it soothing. All the evidence seems to be that art appreciation has lots of positive psychological effects but, unfortunately, it is often portrayed as a minority/elitist pursuit. Very best, Paul.

@DrPaulA.Taylor THANK YOU DR. PAUL!! Well, I've spread the word amongst the women I take walks with, and will continue at the Art Coalition (for the disabled, Veterans & other disenfranchised folks), where I imagine your work will be well received.
When most of the commentary that I listen to on here regarding social & political issues addresses how extremely poorly the World's mental health has faired lately, I figure this (the proper use of our minds & exploration of our emotions through the study of art & literature) ought to be included in their agendas for wellness and growth. I attest that my return to such study (through your videos) has made a notable shift in my ability to think clearly and concentrate! It's also gotten me to begin reading where I left off in classical English lit 😃 which I must say uplifts me like no other.
Additionally, I'll be referring to your posts to the connection I have at our metro behavioral health center, for those whose focus is on engaging the disabled into the world of healing provided art provides will LOVE this. "Move over 'chalk pastels on copy paper'...now, from 2-4 PM, we'll be studying with Dr Paul Taylor!" I suspect your videos will be a regularly scheduled calendar event! Please, keep 'em coming, Dr. Paul! And, thank you, again!

Hi Paul - just came across a photographic piece that references this. Picture for Women by Jeff Wall. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts in this reconception, and specifically how the camera becomes the central figure.

    • @DrPaulA.Taylor
      @DrPaulA.Taylor  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Many thanks for that reference. I think you’re right, the camera assumes the position of “the viewer” and thereby takes over the subjectivity of how we see/view the original Manet painting. The camera also subtracts from the phantasmagorical atmosphere of the original - no smoke/scrumbling, just cold hard lines including the stripped back nature of the electrical equipment and power supplies. I’m predisposed to seeing everything in terms of the disenchantment that modernity brings to life, so I would say all this, but I think Wall does a great job of throwing the Manet painting into sharp relief (so to speak) and adding further layers e.g. the triangulation of the camera lens and then the woman and man’s look. Hope that makes some sort of sense? Thanks again for the reference! Very best, Paul.

Some trigger words get an auto-delete from the Yt bots these days it seems. One has to write in euphemisms to keep one's comment published. Yt bots don't like unvarnished reality it seems.

Thanks Paul. Always wonderful to hear your thoughts.
In your conversation with Richard Grannon from earlier today, you expressed concern that important books are becoming increasingly difficult to find (and the possible causes).
Please can I draw your attention to ‘Castelia Library’. They are reprinting highest quality, leather bound classic, historical, philosophical literature using antique ‘traditional ‘ printing equipment.
It’s a new venture from (name removed) . I’m sure he would be very interested in reprinting for conservation, books that an academic such as yourself would consider ‘essential’ for preservation.
With happy synchronicity, His latest video today - (link below - scroll to 13.00 ) he talks of his ambitions for Castelia library. The books behind him show the quality of the books he’s printing.
I hope you might consider contacting him with the concerns that you expressed today.

That’s great. It seems the ‘link’ was deleting the comment.
In the video he specifically asks for book titles that he could print. He has the same concerns as you.
If it is of interest to you, the manual ‘link’ :
      Yt Channel called “judeo Christ”.
      Today’s video “endgame approaches”
13.00 starts to explain Castelia concept.
29.00 specifically asks for idea requests.
      Thanks Paul.
