Nice Video. The Micron brand rams(MT) are notorious for failures, avoid them like the plague.

Thank you Rob I have purchased a Commodore hard drive for my A500. This is a great series on connecting a Hard drive to a Amiga 500.

Bahhh In my day Rob... I was after the blizzard 1230 iv with SCSI interface 20mb ram... paid a ludicrous amount of money for them and still working today fault free..Running a Yamaha SCSI CDRW Burner and a 6GB Quantum SCSI Drive (Drive died last week)... Can u guess what the burner was used for ;) Ill give you a clue... begins with P * X backups... 😚 using the legendary MakeCD with DAO mode... Rob your drawbridge and other stuff has been a joy to observe and use... Great Videos!!!!

Thanks, glad you’re enjoying drawbridge! And thanks for watching too!

Happy memories. I killed my A590 when it's power supply put out too much voltage. 😢 I ended up getting the GVP side car instead. It was very much faster than the 590 so I wasn't too upset.

Yeah I might be doing a follow up on that speed subject. Both are fairly hard to come by though these days

I was lucky enough to have one of those for my A500 (with KS1.3 so it booted). It was my first hard disk. Workbench became so much more useful when you had a hard drive to boot from. And 20 MB felt like SO much storage space. But the whole setup became quite wide and took up a lot of desk space.

Would love to have owned one back then, but as you say it takes up a lot of room. The desk where I had my Amiga setup literally only fit it so it would have hung off the desk anyway! But yeah I guess I get to explore how much difference having a hard drive connected makes. Thanks for watching

Cool... looks like the A590 PCB was designed at Commodore's West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA headquarters ("WCHEST USA"). And it appears as if the engineers wanted to make sure their names were seen - their names are also on the copper layer by the Molex power connector.
I'm not sure that capacitor was replaced - it looks like they designed the board for a axial capacitor and then used a radial capacitor likely due to cost or supply chain issues. The heat shrink on the leg may just be to protect the excessive length of exposed capacitor leg from shorting. But that cap looks like ones Commodore used on the Amiga.
MT RAM chips from that era are notoriously unreliable, so I'm not surprised that three were bad (and don't be surprised if more of them fail in the future). Looks like someone pulled that chip in a fault-finding mission, broke the leg in the process, then put it back. Was it the eBay seller, or was it the owner that tried and failed to troubleshoot their beloved Amiga back in the day (or both)? We may never know... but yeah, I've bought many things on eBay where I ultimately suspect the seller knew something was amiss, if not wrong, with the item.

Interesting (and yes a few more of those ram
Chips went pop a few weeks later!) the seller did list this as a project he just didn’t have time to finish and had been sitting around for some time so leads me to believe it was probably the owner before him - not that it matters it’s all good now!
I now have another (spoiler) A590 but that has axial capacitor in that spot. Mind you, with commodore who knows!
      Thanks for watching

Brought back memories of my 500+ with a GVP - I think I had 030 and 8mb ram and SCSI drives. Paid £300 for a Quantum Fireball iGB and £300 for 8mb ram.

Wow crazy prices by what we’d expect today! I remember paying £100 for 128mb of ram years ago (for pc) crazy how prices change

Interesting but the musak is distorting because it is so loud.

Can you give me a hint at which part it’s too loud? Will help me with editing

@@RobSmithDevHI Rob, it was about 5:20. It actually doesn't sound distorted on my android tablet I think I need new computer speakers.

@@RobSmithDevI worked for the BBC and Sky as an editor for decades. My opinion is that you don't want your viewers adjusting the volume during the video and have the music just stopping there being silence, so much lower volume than currently. I have noticed youtube ads getting louder recently so I would make your voice as loud as possible and reduce the music volume 75%. Cheers

Cool thanks for the feedback. Yeah probably just turning it up too loud during those bits
