  • It feels like a dusty four hundred and fifty-two items swap with myself... Can you turn construction junk into a cool junk journal? I'm in the midst of moving, and my new appartement is filled with odd finds, which I've of course collected. Instead of tossing them aside, I wonder: Can these quirky pieces become unforgettable memories in a journal? Join me as I show you each item I've stumbled upon and tell you its story. Perhaps you'll get some ideas on where to find such things for your own junk journal.

Thanks Louise for bringing "junk" back into junk journaling! So many people use boughten or other peoples' paper, pictures, ephemera etc. instead of making their journal out of actual junk.... I'm excited to see your finished product! So many good ideas.

Regarding you flattening your newspaper pieces... TIP: (Note, however, some of the print on the paper could transfer to the dish-towel.). You can iron it. Really. You can lightly mist the paper, lightly wet a kitchen dish-towel (wring out the excess water) and place it on top of the paper, then iron on LOW (you don't want to burn the paper or towel) until it flattens, but not necessarily dry. When it's as flat as you want it, remove the dishtowel and let the paper dry the rest of the way. Wash the dish-towel with your regular laundry. Hope that helps... I'm a bit late.

Louise, I have a in restoration...Most of the newspapers can be spritzed with warm water..in a fine spray. Then carefully steamed. Or try a warm iron first, between a soft absorbent flour sack towel, cotton muslin, or pillow case. I weight mine down between plate glass to prevent ripples.
The green thing was a type of rolled netting use for taping, sanding and hole repairs in the plaster walls. The rumpled brown, brittle bits are probably old insulation from the originl home construction left behind when updated.
Boy O Boy...if these walls could talk.
The weirdest things we've ever found was a 24"×30" sheet of metal used for flashing from the SPAM (Hormel) company. An 1885 cylinder dry battery which was leaching acid, A thing called a "What's It" from the late 1880's. It was the first shock treatment machine use for Glaucoma and women's Hysteria...lol!
I do have a rather fun collection of vintage wallpaper from the 1880's. Enrolls found in the attic...
Just loving this video...Be sure to wear a mask when playing with vintage papers.

I currently have a cold virus. I laughed so hard during the filming of removing the wallpaper that I started coughing but I loved you looking through the little hole. When we renovated this house I kept a piece of the wallpaper from 1912-1925 in the dining room to frame and put back on the wall.because it was a farm scene.

I think the stuff you were trying to identify to fill holes in a wall is "spackle", though it's usually for small holes (like from nails/screws). "Putty" also is appropriate, I think, just depends on the size of the hole, I guess.

I agree with other commenters Luise, no matter what challenges you face, you always seem to be able to share joy, surprise and delightful humor in any circumstance! 😆 I found myself smiling and laughing at many points in this video...which brightened up my day! May I share information on some of your "treasures"? This building evidently was built with "lath and plaster" walls and ceilings. It is a very old way of insulating, fire proofing and providing structural strength to buildings pre-1940's. The small "person with a face" stone (@1:09:15) is probably a piece of the plaster that took shape while drying in the wall. The small black, shiny "rock" (@1:09:00) is a piece of heating coal for sure!. Artists here in Pennsylvania, USA carve pieces of coal into decorative images, since it is no longer a primary heating source. Lastly, may I ask if you would consider creating a digital kit of the older buildings and roadways in the area, once your are settled? My grandmother emigrated from Germany to USA in 1929 and I am lucky to have pictures of all the beautiful buildings and cobblestone roads around her family farm. I would love to purchase a future digital collection of the amazing German architecture and roads still used today. Thank you for your consideration. May this be the beginning of a grand adventure for you!! 🌻

Hello Luise, I am curious/ intrigued how you going to construct the journal. I love what you take from the apartment it make my to look different at stuff 😅 The black glossy stone is properly okd as well I think it is Kohle in German, coal in English. I think this house is old and in the old days thet have stoves how the people burn whit coals. In Germany there were many coal mines.
I wish you al the best whit the move.❤

Hi Luise! I love this, a true junk journal and with deep ties to your new home and memories of the process to create that home. I know it will be so meaningful for you. I love that you include a lot of bulky items that I might have considered too difficult to incorporate into a book-can’t wait to see how you use them! I also wanted to add that I am so impressed with your English and your ability to talk about and explain construction processes and use vocabulary that doesn’t come up routinely. I like to think of myself as fluent in Spanish and functional in German-but I couldn’t talk about fuse boxes and flooring materials etc in either language. We built a house a few years ago so a lot of the things you showed are familiar! We also bought and remodeled an old house many years ago (almost 50 years ago) so I've seen so many of the same things you have found! Back in the 1920s and 30s folks used old newspapers for insulation in the walls, You can gently spread the papers with your hands (very gently) or you can iron it but not too hot of an iron. It can scorch.
My brother used to look for old abandoned houses and would find out who they belonged to. Many times the owners were happy to allow him to go through the houses, clean them out, and keep anything he found. It was amazing the papers and things that people left behind when leaving. We never knew the people or why they left but it was so interesting to see some of the stuff he would find.
If you put a little soap in the water before you spray the wallpaper and let it soak for 15 or 20 minutes, you can scrap the wallpaper off more easily. Bathroom wallpaper is hard because it sometimes has waterproofing on it because of the steam in the bathroom.
I am anxious to see your journal and how you use your "finds." Maybe you can make dangles with some of the bulky or heavier items. Just a thought. Happy crafting.

Sometimes, our destiny brings big and sudden changes in our lives. Even though the change is positive and maybe even beyond what you hoped for yourself in your secret dreams, it manifests anyway. As you are no dought discovering these times of change require courage, faith, and sacrifices. That's how I think of you missing out on the concert you had planned before the big change. You have found in your apartment little totems that are so precious, like the little person with the sad eyes but big smile and great heart encased or maybe even emerging from a cocoon or the womb into this new life. That time of not quite birthing can feel like a trap as you struggle to move from one life into the next. I imagine you are in love and I wish you a very happy and joyous future. This new very junkie journal will be filled with beauty. 1939 would have been an auspicious and frightening time in the world where hopes of victory and overcoming hardships moved into a world war. Now look what happiness comes to this pretty house with three apartments. I bet she has many stories to tell. Much love from me in Aotearoa New Zealand. ❤❤❤ P.S. I think you need to carefully flatten out the old newspapers. They will be full of history that might be helpful to you and maybe us too.

I absolutely loved this video. Having lived through a few remodeling projects, I collected all kinds of building materials. I still use them. Old roofing shingles, tyvek house wrap, drywall tape to patch holes in walls, even old antique nails and copper sheeting. I'm really going to enjoy this video series. Keep an eye out for wire that you can rust. That newspaper is cool. Can you iron it flat? Or, decoupage it onto a piece of paper to use in a journal. That clump of paper could be made into a wonky flower or some kind of creature. I love that wallpaper that was behind the mirror. ❤❤

So many things to say about this new journey with you...( but most of it should be private ). I also struggle with the language because is not my mother one. MOST OF ALL : THANKS FOR SHARING IT!!!!. I had some 💡💡💡: How about a vignette for those bulk items like U'd made for Tim's ideology? (e.g. keys hanger, decoration for your place etc). BTW I was watching your video longing to enter the screen and keep chatting... About those rocks I've loved the symbology.... I saw a baby between the comfort layers and a sided mother praying (where U've saw an heart). Longing to watch the continuation!!!! Tschüss

I'm an older lady/girl/person that lives in the United States. I really like the way your eyes see something other than the actual object that you hold. I am in transition too, except that I have no idea where I will live next, I just know the property owner wants their home back which means that I have to go. So, I sleep, journal, craft, watch You Tube and everything else while setting or laying on my little bed. Funny thing is that even with the bummer parts of my current situation, my inner eyes still see the little head sticking our of the thing that popped out the wall in front of you. I see the nails as flower stems on the cover of a journal or album. I see the wire hanger the copper thingy with all the little U shapes lined up next to each other as a fence thing to hold the flower stems leaving it bent or else taking a plyers and bending each U shape so that it is flat like the end of the corner part. You got quite a craft haul there and all it cost was sweat and a train ticket. Nice goin'!!

In English the stuff you fill holes in the wall with is often called spackle, which probably comes from German. Also, for some reason in English a boiler is part of a steam heat system providing heat for the house, while the thing that heats water for washing is called a water heater. Sink and bathtub water is hot but not boiling. Loved your video!

Oh, Luise, I'm so happy that you are making this series on moving and creating junk journal along the way! I am also in the process of moving from Indiana to Wisconsin and my life is in a crazy limbo right now. I am also creating a travelling journal and have been saving up scraps and things from boxes in our attic, to temporary rental apartment flyers, to information from the home we plan to move into up in Wisconsin. I will admit I'm not so creative as you, but you always inspire me and this is the greatest thing! I love your videos and this moving journey is exactly what I need right now! Yay!!!

In USA, we call those wood pieces in the wall "studs". The basement is under the house. A cellar is in the ground, but it doesn't have to be under the house, it can be in the field. I hope you don't mind me telling you these words. I love to learn languages and you know English very well, and you seem open to learning more. Love your videos. This one is very interesting, for sure.

With the newspapers, I think I would first take a lot of pictures. Then I would take one of the smaller sections, try to gently pull it apart, and glue the pieces onto another paper to see if that works out and if it looks good.

But now with this little tiny persons head sticking out I see a flower opening which could be you blossoming into a new part of life. The screws or bolts and the nails yes I would for sure rust some papers. I guess my thought of using wallpaper was in my thoughts and thought it maybe too late and it would have been all thrown away but it looks like great minds think alike. Oh and electrical box or electrical panel is what you were trying to say.

Hello one more time Luise! Sorry for spamming your comments. You can tell I was enthralled with your junk-turned-treasures and how you are determined to show us the true nature of junk journaling! I hope I was helpful to you by offering words to increase your English vocabulary. One other thing I have noticed in your English usage, is we say "I had the experience..." not "I made the experience..." Or you might say "It was my experience that I had a good day." or "My experience shows that it is better to do X instead of Y." Also about the saying, "in my eyes", It's OK to say this, but you could also say, "From my point of view..." or, "In my opinion..." or "I have found that..." or "I discovered that..." these are just additional ways of saying "in my eyes," which people know what you are saying, but to say "in my eyes" usually the proposition "in" means with this usage, actually means inside your eye, like you have a piece of dust or lint in your eyes. I hope this is of some help. I am looking forward to your next posts and I hope everything going forward with your move goes more smoothly than how it started. I love that you are making it into an adventure no matter what! Kind regards from California ❤
