  • Discover Alberobello
Alberobello is a small Italian town like any other at first glance. The streets are narrow and hilly, the houses are white, the weather is pleasant and life is slow.

But if you take a closer look at some houses, you'll think you've landed in a fantasy book. Small houses with conical roofs are scattered all around you.
    Trulli in Alberobello
If you take a closer look, you'll find that these little dwarf houses are actually real and people still live in them. If you have decided to see what a hobbit house might look like, you should go to Alberobello, the land of dwarf houses, a small town in Puglia, a region in southern Italy, not far from the city of Bari .
It is famous for its small, unique historic houses called trullo (plural trulli). The name of the town takes its origin from the medieval Latin name of the region "siva arboris belli" (The wood of the tree of war).
    Trulli houses
Trulli are dry stone dwellings with conical roofs. A typical trullo has thick walls and is round or square in shape. In Alberobello, most trulli are square in shape.
Usually, a trullo is a small, single-story building. It is technically difficult to build a multi-story trullo. There are only a few two-story trulli in the city. The second floor of these buildings is made of wood, but this rarely happens. It is easier and more practical to build several small trulli than one large one.
This is why the great families of Alberobello did not live in a single trullo, but rather in groups of trulli. Large families could build a group of dozens of trulli next to each other. The interior of a trulli is mainly made of wood. The roofs are not painted, but the walls are traditionally painted white.
Trullo is a type of rural building. It was intended to serve as field shelters and warehouses. Alberobello is a unique case where they have become the main place of habitation of the local population.
    History of trulli
The history of Alberobello is of course linked to money and cunning Italian aristocrats.
When in the 14th century the hitherto free area came under the control of the Count of Conversano, he and his successors decided not to build permanent dwellings there for their peasants, to the extent that taxes on land without permanent dwellings were lower than those with officially recognized towns. In order to pay small taxes, Alberobello was supposed to be classified as an uninhabited area. It is for this reason that the Alberobello trulli were built in a specific way.
The trulli were built of roughly worked limestone, because this material could be easily dismantled and reused later for the reconstruction of the dwellings. Due to the intrigues of their owner, the inhabitants of Alberobello have already been living in trulli for several centuries.
At the end of the 18th century, the town had 3,500 inhabitants. In 1797 Alberobello was finally granted town status, but until that date its population lived in trulli, which could be easily and quickly dismantled if necessary
