DHCP Relay Agent || IP Helper Address || DHCP 7

This video answers the question "what is a DHCP Relay?"
A DHCP relay helps to forward DHCP requests and replies between DHCP server and Client on distinct network segments.
A newly initialized DHCP client first of all broadcasts a Discover packet on the network to discover active DHCP servers on the link, if the DHCP server happens to be on another network segment, this broadcast will never get to the DHCP server because broadcasts cannot be forwarded across networks. A quick fix will be to move the DHCP server to the same network segment as the client. However, when the network expands and more devices are connected, it would be uneconomical to install a DHCP server on every single network segment.

@Hangman11 There's no difference as they are one and the same. In the cisco world, the "ip-helper address" command implements the DHCP Relay functionality, and on platforms such as Huawei's VRP or YunShan configuration platforms, it's "dhcp relay server-ip"
So between the dhcp relay and ip-helper, it could be a command line instruction or the feature itself. But they're one and the same.

Yes you can. But not by broadcast. The DHCP relay receives the broadcast from the client, and then regenerates the packet to before sending to the server.

Perform the following:
1. Configure the IP pool/scope for devices in the different network on the DHCP server and ensure the use the gateway for those devices as the gateway IP.
2. Go to the gateway interface on the different network and configure the IP-helper address on that interface for it to become a DHCP relay.
3. Ping the relay interface from the server, and ensure that they're reachable. It should work now.
