I recently moved from a Flat in Scotland to a Cottage with a Garden and took up gardening for the first time in 50yrs. Apart from falling in love with plants, I absolutely love the birds, bees and butterflies that visit. Seeing that increase year on year makes the simple things that keep you happy. ❤

One thing i have done with massive tree root balls before is to use them to protect areas of erosion in slow flowing water and small streams. I had the trunk cut higher up for a longer length and a digger push the length of the trunk into the bank, leaving the roots exposed to the water flow. The roots then slow the flow of water closer to the bank, making it drop silts and stopping potential erosion and scour, the roots also provided a nice habitat for small fishes to hide in and nooks and crannies for plants to take hold. I know you dont have a permanent flowing system of water, but I would look to place it where you have access and can potentially benefit by protecting the bank of the river. Hopefully this will also create some nice planting pockets for plants that would do well on the river bank

Zai pits concentrate what little water available into small areas where plants can begin the regenerative cycle. The principle of permaculture is that multiple plants placed in the same Zai pit create a symbiotic relation with the microorganisms and sharing production of beneficial nutrients.
Danou, you are seeing the first baby steps of progress. There is a whole lot more green on your property than your neighbors, that even their cattle know the difference.

Exactly, many folks would love to see neighboring properties improve. The more areas that improve, the higher chance you have for rain events. If your fam could benefit from some free or cheaper food, it would be worth it. Geoff Lawton eats primarily off his own land every day. His neighbor who is the queen of compost has an amazing set up and generates her whole income and food off of the tiny patch of land. I'm shocked with how much fertility she has, the fertility isn't leaking over into neighboring properties.
The bonus with Lucas's land is the ditch that already has plants growing. As he harvests more water, he will see those road side ditches increase with life, and he can likely get mulch from it or perhaps transplant some life from it for more ground cover.
I can't imagine having bare ground all around my house like that. Here we have grasses all around the houses, but the grass is cut stupidly short. I have some trees, but I have a raised bed that I put up a bit over a year ago - I planted asparagus around it and had some flowers and tried to plant a few other things in the raised bed (it had very little soil in it, but a whole lot of branches and shredded cardboard that is composting down). This year I will likely have tomatoes and other food plants growing in it much earlier, but today we have freezing temps.

Have you thought about the pallet composting method? They are fairly simple to build and don't cost much, as long as you have access to free pallets. It may be something you might want to look into. I would say it. Is mostly the leaders of these communities that let's them down. It feels like anyone with power gets corupted.
Also the victim culture is very bad....
I get laughed at by my friends and straight up get told I am waisting my life but if I zoom in on those friends lifes they are also helping their workers and families even if it is as simple as paying for children's school or unplanned medical expenses... So even if they don't like to admit it they are stil a blessing to their workers...
My tribe gets bad press for being rasist (google apartheid and Afrikaans) but there is thousands of us helping with a fokus on poor African tribes. I have not seen 1 single black person running a charity whose fokus is poor Afrikaans people 🤣🤣🤣.
At the end of my life I would like to be able to look back and feel like I was a blessing to the people around me regardless of who they are.
TH-cam would like to blame the westerners for exploiting Namibia. but as someone with boots on the ground I can tell you 99% of westerners are building the country and the people and not exploiting it.
We have bad leaders who sell our resources to foreign powers.
