Really liking the fact that you can maintain your power through all the flight time. Kinda had the most serious situations everytime i was grinding the volts down at the end of the pack.
I'm aligned with you on the concept of not rebuilding everything once it's hyped and then having to work on your crap constantly to make it good. So I'm just now switching to 6s for the first time. It's funny because there are a ton of 6s vs 4s videos out there, but this is the best most informative and logical of all of them and i want to give you kudos for that. Especially since you're not a racer anymore and the biggest push for 6s comes from the racing crowd. That's what I do and still think this is the best comparative video out there.
I really love your explanation of the pros and cons: particularly the increase yaw authority as well less throttle resolution. These are points other pilots or reviewers haven’t mentioned. 👍🏻
I suppose he could have calculated and stepped down the kv (1300-1400ish maybe?) to have made it have the same amount of thrust as his 4S setup? Either way, point taken.
Throttle resolution has only to do with his KV choice. Steele motors are at 2350KV and the 6s setup is 2550KV theoretically. May be as high as 2650... needs to be tested. Anyway, the lower the KV the more the resolution. You could also compensate by adjusting the max throttle in your flight software or radio by 10%. Problem solved.
Thanks Steele, it was clear to me that I wanted to start with 4S, but you have clarified doubts about the 6S. This week I get the QX7, so give it to the simulator. Courage, we are many all over the world who appreciate your work. Remain who you are.
I usually get 4-5 minutes on 4s. Not sure I’m gonna switch yet only because all my rigs are 4s. I’ll probably start moving to 6s over time although I’m in no rush. Thanks for all your awesomeness Steele. Happy flying
Same thing here with jets. Tried to move from 6S to 8S. Some very good advantages, mainly less power loss due to heat... but tons of other problems getting in the way. Finding the right setup takes time and money.
Best video imo covering the 6s topic by now. and i hate your facts. i have so many 2300 & 2600kv setups and 4s esc. what should i do with them now? just kidding ;) i personally ride the ultrlight/featherlight train the last couple months. AUWs under 450g incl. Session4 running 4s 1000 - 1300mah packs and 2205 on a light prop. 3-6min of energetic flight and also less voltage sag throughout the pack. I also discovered much lower damage on crashes due to lower forces on impact. The flight feel is not for everyone, i have been told... i like it. it is so different and responsive. and a new dimension of tightness. perhaps you already had the chance, if not, i highly recommend to give it a shot. thanks for all your effort. i love your van and all the craftswork you invested. keep on going!!
HHaha :). Thank you so much man yup lower the weight less damage. For sure. With a freestyle rig it’s a sweet spot. For me between 550-600g is the sweet spot. Any heavier and shit breaks and lighter and it doesn’t huck as nicely
Heck yeah, I'm in the middle of updating my Alien from V1 to Steeles current setup. And I have a bag of 470's from my MikroKopter days. Great timing on this video for me. Rotor On Steele!
Thanks for sharing your insight on the 6S set-up..! Good points made, and I hope this goes a long way in solving any argument or controversy... Ultimately, everyone is different, and it's up to each of us to find that set-up that suits us...!
Best breakdown of the situation I've seen - Thanks for the thorough analysis. I just ordered 7 6S 1250's for try. Running 2300/2400kv on most of my quads, but am going to limit throttle to 75% and start swapping in lower KV motors. It's the flight time that's drawing me. I'm like the long flight times, and like you say, you only can really fly hard on the 1st half of most 4S batteries. Love the outtro!
Man perfect timing, I have been wondering about this myself. My motors are getting worn out and half my 4S packs are dying. I get 4-5 min on my 490g AUW w/1500 lipo no GoPro rig. I can get 7min when just super slow cruising. All my gear is 6S rated sow swapping motors and packs can certainly double my flight times. I really like your slow methodical pace in gear choice. Master what you have if you have good components and don't jump on the bandwagon too soon.
What really bugs me when people try and compare 4s and 6s is their setups are very rarely comparable. Yes, there are lots of efficiency gains by going to 6s, but make the comparisons fair. They would be a lot closer if the setups were more comparable. The 6s setup Steele is using is comparable to a 1650mah 4s battery and 2550kv motors, so of course it's going to be more powerful and last longer. If it were a direct comparison between 4s and 6s he should have used approximately an 866mah 6s with 1563kv motors.
So I did try lower KV. Actually 1600 to be exact. And I found that the efficiency was essentially the same. Same flight times as 1700kv. But not the same top end extra power or the extra speed. For what I do both were fine but I preferred staying in the lower throttle range. And using the top end power in moments when I’ve wished I had more. Like chasing down cars or extreme sports athletes. Also. With a hero 6 and the added weight. The 1700s made it feel like you were running a Gopro at all
Aww man... let’s see here... 44.00 x 30 packs , 119.00 bucks for new motors, soldering on them ugly ass caps... a whole new tuning sesh, oh and can’t forget about the backup quad so times that by two.. carry the one ... and whammo just went broke for a few more ticks of the tock’s .... that bruh I’m all in, let’s do this shit ! Doe’ nee’ noo’ dam sponsors my dudes, gots me a job.. .. .. .. (Fo now dat is) .... most excellent of breakdowns in the history of ever my dude ! Thanks much for all the help , and time spent laying it all for us ! You the man Steele. And also , you know we are all waiting to hear your thoughts on the whole “Rapidfire “ module I seen you testing ... you know we didn’t miss that shit .... 🤘😁 C-ya ..
Great explanation. I can see many people selling off their 4S packs to get 6S now. But yeah, longer flight time is a no brainer. I wouldn't mind giving it a try.
Love your videos, it was your " why fly 800mw " video that inspired me to go build my own drone and learn to fly but, to be fair in this video I dont feel that as far as battery life is concerned this was a fair comparison between 4s and 6s, you were very clearly pushing the 4s harder then the 6s but I'm sure its difficult to be exact.
agree - 6s flight was like nothing compare to 4s. Actually amp draw was same on similar moves like circling around an object, forward flight. The only difference I saw was max current being lower on 6s during punch outs about 20% lower , but that won't give longer flight time by that much on its own
Great explanation Steele. Been flying on 6s for a while & agree it does take some adjustment to get used to the decreased resolution + you definitely need the Low ESR Caps. I'm particularly liking 6s on my long-range 7" setups too. :)
Interesting comparison. - Side note, throttle expo can be used to decrease the steepness of the throttle curve around the hover/cruise point. The throttle-to-lift relationship is not linear to begin with.
i have been watching steele video's for years just bought a controller want to get started in fpv freestyle just need to build a drone thanks for getting me into this rotor riot and mainly MR steele .just need to get the stuff to build one and learn how to program ;-)thanks
WOW! That was fking NUTS!! Man I'm pumped about this, I've been hearing fascinating things about 6s but you just blew my mind Sir. I've already got a decent amount of ballooning from running higher kv, so to hear sag is virtually gone on 6s, YES!! Bruhhhhh, now I've gotta try it. I can still see a little more maneuverability in your 4s stuff, it's kinda like when I run a Hero6 vs the Session, I could feel the difference but it's not like the more weight is hurting things, it's just changing them. SMASHED THAT THUMBS UP HOMIE :D
Really cool inputs, I've just built a 6 inch 6S quad for cruising and long range but I might give it a go on my 5 inch when enough motor options are out
Your reasoning for holding out on on 6s until now are the same reasons why I don't go out and always buy the first generation of new products that everybody a lot of times rave about. I always wait until the products are proven to work and work well and consistently. I hate throwing away money on unproven technology.
Question: You said the lower throtle resolution is worse with the 6s... isnt it possible to limit the throtle or change the mode to a different throttle curve to compensate for that?
Awesome comparison. One thing that I believe is off a bit though is the price of 6s packs. Companies do not need to create high C 6s packs for them to perform. Lower quality Lipos with 6 cells are going to work great because of the extra V and Watts. Buying a 4s 100C vs a 6s 100C, the 6s will be more expensive, but 100C 6s packs are not needed to achieve what you showed in this video. A pulse 6s 1050(75C) is 25-30$, yet the 4s 1550(100C) is $45 at some sites!? Pyrodrone is another example, the 1250 6s(75C) packs cost the same as a 1550 4s(95C). Keep up the great content!
Mr Steele, you are a great source of information and knowledge. Thanks for all your contributions to this community. My personal hope is to some day get enough spare money that I can dump it on a Mr Steele set up 😁👍👌
great vid there bud, good explanations, cant believe how much longer flight time your getting , pretty amazing, unfortunately in new zealand batteries are expensive , so the 6s are gona be reaaal expensive, but worth pondering fo sho
I run a 6S 1500maH on my 7" quad. The bigger props give a nice boost in lift. So I notice the weight but not bad at all. It's not 5" quick but it is still fun. I like the variety.
I know this is an old video, but the power these lipos can kick out is insane. yes, it's very quick "pulses", but non the less, pretty impressive. At the one minute mark in the video (or the first puch) the 6s drone pulls around 1.6 KILOWATTS from the battery, and around 1.1KW for the 4s. Thats bonkers :D
I slammer my alien with 25mm standoffs and simply used a 3d printed micro camera mount that connects to 2 standoffs. I did have to cut out a tiny section on the front of the top plate, to make room for the lens, but it was very easy to do and worked perfectly. the only reason the alien is so tall is to fit a standard sized camera. that's just silly at this point. slam it. it'll fly better too.
Interesting. Its the thing that annoys me the most about the alien right now. When I destroy a cam, theres no simple replacement. I usually have to get a Swift 2 and rehouse it into an old hs1177 housing.
Hate to be the one to say it and maybe you say it yourself (still watching the vid).... but.... your 6s pack has way more watt hours than your 4s pack, hense the much longer flight time. 1500mah 4s compares close to 1050mah 6s
I learned about the pros and cons of 4s and 6s on a stretched 550 build I use for long range, 6s won me over, over an hour flight time and better feel. I bumped all my 6"/4s setups to 6"/5s and love it, but I need a different motor to bring them up to 6s. The winding on these look pretty *Stout* and with lower KV I am wondering how they might fair running 6"/6s? Still can't beat having a few 5"/4s setups around; cheap and effective.
The spark when you connect it is only partially from the higher voltage. You added 4, 470ufd low ESR caps that you're now charging instantly when you connect the battery. Caps will [try to] charge, just as fast as they can discharge.
Can I be a little picky about the flight footage? The DVR was a little transparent, fooling me into thinking there was a cut in the 4S footage. I also heard some talking, maybe from the stick cam.
If the new 25amp 4-in-1 is able to handle 6s, one can assume that the single 25amp esc's can also? With respect to their amp limitations of course. This would be good to hear.
Why does 5s get skipped over? Lol I just bought some pyrodrone 5s packs 1250mah , 25 bucks. 175 grams. Get more power longer run time on those too, just not as dramatic as with 6s. Also I don’t have to change my hardware as much.
Down to earth, honest, keeping it 100, and not being a crowd follower is why I continue to follow you... Thanks kid!
By the time I graduate from 3S , MrSteelio will be flying Uncut Car Battery
Lmao im still on 2s 5000kv custom motors
I'm flying 1s mobula 6 and now ordered a 6s nazgul5 lol hopefully bigger is better, best of luck!
Me who just got his 3 3s 850mah batteries on the mail for the alien 3"
Really liking the fact that you can maintain your power through all the flight time. Kinda had the most serious situations everytime i was grinding the volts down at the end of the pack.
Started to get nauseous around 2:50 you were going insane with the flips I FUCKIN LOVE IT ❤️🙏🏽 , please keep the videos coming
I'm aligned with you on the concept of not rebuilding everything once it's hyped and then having to work on your crap constantly to make it good. So I'm just now switching to 6s for the first time. Let the tuning nightmares begin! Thanks for the video Steele. Stay up 😎🎮🤙🏻
I got you boy. I’ll do a video on tuning soon
I really love your explanation of the pros and cons: particularly the increase yaw authority as well less throttle resolution. These are points other pilots or reviewers haven’t mentioned. 👍🏻
Thats nothing to do with 6S vs 4S setup, his 6s rig is just way more powerfull with that kv than his 4S setup.
I suppose he could have calculated and stepped down the kv (1300-1400ish maybe?) to have made it have the same amount of thrust as his 4S setup? Either way, point taken.
It has everything to do with higher voltage. The more voltage and lower KV you have the more torque you have. Equaling more yaw authority..
More KV is more resolution not the other way around.
Never thought I'd see Mr Steve board a hypetrain so early.
And caps. OMFG.
I started running 5s for the no sag reason.
Thanks Steele, it was clear to me that I wanted to start with 4S, but you have clarified doubts about the 6S.

I'm still impressed how light your setup is. A slammed alien with the new kiss tiny on 6S is really quite tempting.
Same thing here with jets. Tried to move from 6S to 8S. Some very good advantages, mainly less power loss due to heat... but tons of other problems getting in the way. Finding the right setup takes time and money.

when doing a comparison there can only be one variable: the lipos. this is just another bro science vid
the science of bro :)
lol
@@DroneRecipe Just like comparing a 12V battery and the socket in your house right?
Only variable..
done and done. thanks for all the necessary info without the hype. also It's Thursday My Dudes!
Hahahah. Thursday. MY DUDE !!
*consistency. Good vid. Worth the watch.

Really knocked it out of the park on this vid! It's off season out in arizona so might think about building one for next winter.
U are the Quad core professor. Awesome info.

Great explanation Steele. Been flying on 6s for a while & agree it does take some adjustment to get used to the decreased resolution + you definitely need the Low ESR Caps.
I'm particularly liking 6s on my long-range 7" setups too. :)
David Martin I’m building a long range 7” Chameleon, what Low ESR Caps should I be using uF/V. Never used them before on any of my builds.
Thanks bro!!! the battery industry sincerely says Thank You :)
Interesting comparison. - Side note, throttle expo can be used to decrease the steepness of the throttle curve around the hover/cruise point. The throttle-to-lift relationship is not linear to begin with.
Thanks for all the Information. Really helpful. Waiting for your 1700kv motors to drop before i try it and i will definatly go with the 4-in-1.
awesome!! i really want to build a 6s alien now! thanks for the great video!
Been on the fence for a minute, more so with racing an sag....Thanks for intelligent and correlating review, next build 6s! 💯🍻
Haha what a freaky video cool man 2x mr steele drone screaming in 1 video
Thanks for all the info Steele 👍
i have been watching steele video's for years just bought a controller want to get started in fpv freestyle just need to build a drone thanks for getting me into this rotor riot and mainly MR steele .just need to get the stuff to build one and learn how to program ;-)thanks

Throttle resolution on low end can be fixed by editing the throttle curve.
Awesome comparison. I'm really liking these new videos. I have a 6s setup I'm going to try soon and now I know a bit more about what I'm getting into.
Damn, now I'm gonna have to build a 6S rig. Thanks for ruining my wallet Steele. I NEED those flight times.
Great video Steele... Thanks for sharing...
Thanks for taking the time to give us some good information man.
Thanks for breaking it down. really worth it.
10:22 the fact that he knows what drone it is just by hearing the motors is amazing!! It shows how long he has been in this hobby for.
Your right bro! I love my 6s setup too!
Maybe throttle cap to help with throttle resolution?
I was thinking about trying something like that.
Yeah! Play with throttle curves and get the resolution back. Put the last 30% of power in the last 5% of stick deflection - bonkers no2 boost xD
Great video man. lots of good info
Thanks for the in depth explanation dude!
Great in depth explanation ! Thank you !
Awesome test dude!! 🤘🏽😎
🤗✊🏽
Thanks for the help. I am still new and working on my first quad.So I think I will stick with 4s for now that is.
Great break down steele very honest
Steele, great comparison! Thanks. Nice flying, too.
Really cool inputs, I've just built a 6 inch 6S quad for cruising and long range but I might give it a go on my 5 inch when enough motor options are out
Why change to a 5inch? I've got a 6inch myself - what is your reasoning for going down?
Very informative. Thanks for sharing Mister
Your reasoning for holding out on on 6s until now are the same reasons why I don't go out and always buy the first generation of new products that everybody a lot of times rave about. I always wait until the products are proven to work and work well and consistently. I hate throwing away money on unproven technology.
The whole hobby has been a unproven tech up until about now.
Question: You said the lower throtle resolution is worse with the 6s... isnt it possible to limit the throtle or change the mode to a different throttle curve to compensate for that?
Thanks for the update man. Super helpful
why do people comment without watching the vid/or the whole vid😂 great comparison👍 plz share us your 6S PIDS🙏
Haha. I will soon enough let me fine tune them
I'm here flying a 6s drone with 4s batteries because I already had the 4s. This really has me wanting to order some 6s!
I've only been fly quads for about 3 weeks from scratch... im already on 6s 😂 had about 6 flights on 4s then I got curious and I love it
Interesting stats. Lower max amps on 6S cuz Ohm said so. Lower temp on 6S as well, probably also due to the lower current. Thanks for the video.
Solid solid solid review 🤙🏼
Ethix Socal Meetup!!!! DO IT!

Still. More cells. Higher cost
great vid as always, please make comparison between rapidfire and laforge :) a lot of people are waiting for your opinion, me included
Haha. Right now. I prefer the laforge v3. Still. But maybe a software update will change that
Mr Steele, you are a great source of information and knowledge.
Wow straight up skills
I run a 6S 1500maH on my 7" quad. The bigger props give a nice boost in lift. So I notice the weight but not bad at all. It's not 5" quick but it is still fun. I like the variety.
Very informative. Thanks for posting.
Awesome vid!
the pop when plugging 6s in annoying. was thinking a switch should be added somewhere on quad pig tail ?💁
I know its not a thing but would be nice
this is way too crazy to watch mr :D
good video, was wondering when you were going to do this Steele ! Hope to see ya at the rampage bro
I know this is an old video, but the power these lipos can kick out is insane. yes, it's very quick "pulses", but non the less, pretty impressive. Oh, do your mind sharing how you did mount the micro cam into the alien?
Haha. With a ghetto setup. The spacer from the foxeer Predator
Do you think the same principle works in fixed wing aircraft for the sake of flight time?
change your throttle curve add throttle expo. to get throttle resolution back...simple
Damn Mr. Steve is going to 6S...but all the balls have been ripped. This is the biggest news since he changed to triblades from bi-blades!
Hate to be the one to say it and maybe you say it yourself (still watching the vid).... but.... your 6s pack has way more watt hours than your 4s pack, hense the much longer flight time. 1500mah 4s compares close to 1050mah 6s
yup, that's what i thought
Yea, Steeley knows it's more power overall. 15g for all the extra time seems like a no brainer
Same thinkadge man I use 1500 4s and some times with hard ripadge and get 4 to 5 mins
Power =. V x A. Raising V means lower A for a given power usage. Lower A results in your capacity lasting longer.
YEAH BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
I tryed 5s on my mr steele quad build by flitetest and i like it so much that i order one more pair of rebel 5s high-C for my quad.
Thanks man, good video, great info 👍
awesome test.... good info
Great comparison.... personally I love flying as low as I can, so 4s is my choice... but I can see 6s coming into my life in the near future
Nice! Very informative man
What is the weight difference? Do you think the top plate needs to be reinforced on the alien?
just got my 6s up and runnin! cannot go back. other quad will stay 4s until those batteries die. i wonder what 5s would feel like on the 2345's.
Let the revolution begin! lol
Yessssssss 6S is the 💣🚀
Steele can you show us how you wired the 4 in 1 ESC to the pdb??
hi interesting test, can you use the same Wh battery next time?
Nice informative vid!!!...... thank you 🙏
If the new 25amp 4-in-1 is able to handle 6s, one can assume that the single 25amp esc's can also? With respect to their amp limitations of course. This would be good to hear.
Why does 5s get skipped over? Lol
I just bought some pyrodrone 5s packs 1250mah , 25 bucks. 175 grams. Get more power longer run time on those too, just not as dramatic as with 6s. Also I don’t have to change my hardware as much.
Ethan exactly!! Why the low kv?? 2450kv on 6" 5s lipos ftw 👍👍
