This is one of the songs where Jon Bonham (the drummer) plays in a different time signature than the rest of the band is playing. It's difficult to do, not just for the drummer but the rest of the band as well. As a listener, it makes it hard to find the groove on your first time through the song. But after a few times through it, you feel the groove a lot more and you think, "how did they come up with that?".

Led Zeppelin was/is an influence on everyone. This was one of the 1st albums I bought that wasn't The Beatles specifically because of this song. The technique is call & response. It was unusual because the call was vocal and the response was instrumental. There are 3 sections (instrumentally) which are fairly simple when you look at the tabs. The timing and cadence make it quite a bit more complex, but still not too hard to play. Jay mentioned a few things that made Led Zeppelin a cut above almost everyone else. John Bonham's drumming is in a class by itself. Robert Plant's voice is what every rocker wishes he had. John Paul Jones could play just about anything and was/is a genius in terms of creating very complex time signatures and changes between them within the same piece. And then there's Jimmy Page. Besides being a guitarist extraordinaire, he was a masterful producer. One of the things he did on Black Dog and many others was double and triple tracking a line. That's why it sounds like there's more than one guitar even though he's the only one playing guitar. (David Gilmore of Pink Floyd is another master of this.) And he often plays more than one part. It's as captivating and electrifying now as it was all those years ago. Never gets old.

It's so hard for me to imagine that there are people out there that don't know Led Zeppelin. When I was a little kid in the late '70s, living a super sheltered life with my ultra-conservative christian parents, we lived in a small town with no radio stations, and only church music and classical music were allowed in the house. I heard rock music in movies and during trips to the city, but it was forbidden for us to have at home.
    Until...
One day I was snooping in my parents' room when they were out (kids in the '70s got left home alone all the time. It was great), and found my mother's record collection. The Byrds, Beatles, Gordon Lightfoot, The Mamas and the Papas, the Stones, Supertramp, many more, and... Led Zeppelin! I remember being blown away by the jacket for Led Zeppelin III (fans know what I'm talking about).
Every time my parents left the house, I'd move as fast as I could to that record box and grab one to put on the stereo. I listened to rock music in secret for the next 13 years - never got caught - until I was old enough to move out of the house. And one of my first purchases in my first place; a stereo, followed by every Zeppelin album ever recorded, which I've been listening on regular rotation for decades now. I know every Zeppelin song forward and backward (literally backward - in the '80s, the church I was in told us that if we played rock music backwards, we'd hear satanic messages. So naturally my buddies and I rigged a tape deck to play cassettes in reverse).
Anyway, glad you've stumbled acorss them. Better late then never, but whatever you do, don't keep it hidden from the kids!

I'm a preacher's daughter, from the "Bible Belt". So, I know all about that stuff. But, Mom & Dad were more interested in what was on TV! No laugh-in, no sexual scenes, etc. But, since I was an only child, there was no one to tell on me about my music! I am just glad they never looked inside my album covers & read the words. I remember an
Elton John song with the ward "Damn" in it. I would just talk real loud so they did not hear it or turn down the radio just before he said the word.
I knew that my Dad & his 6 brothers all used to play instruments - grandpa - championship fiddler, grandma- excellent guitarist - all Ingalls family very musical. BUT IT WAS LIKE YOU FINDING YOUR MOM'S RECORDS when I heard my Dad, the preacher, telling my only child - a son - excellent musician - that Dad & his brothers used to play together all the time at the "honkey tonk". I overheard him & ran into my parents room in total surprise! I said You Did What??????? And people were Dancing & Drinking!!!!!! My Dad got this big grin on his face and sheepishly said, "Oh I never told you that before? TOO FUNNY! I Love You Daddy - RIP w/Jesus I'll see you soon enough!

"Thank you" has been one of my favorites for decades. I used part of the song as my h.s. senior quote.
I also fought one of my English professors because I used Led Zep as an example of modern poetry. The words to "thank You" (not the actual song) made him change his mind (and my grade!).

Great reaction. Led Zeppelin set the bar for what a rock band could be in the 70's, and after that, most bands didn't even try since Zeppelin was so amazing. All four members were exceptional, and together they were unstoppable. Interesting about them is that their guitar play (Jimmy Page) was also their producer. So what you hear is unique, and exactly what he wanted the band to sound like.

Led Zeppelin Going to California is one of their best songs . You want acoustic guitar and a mandolin , its mellow song. People only think of Zeppelin as hard rock. I suggest you watch a live version. Alot of the song is a reference to Joni Mitchell. Robert Plant ( lead singer) thought she was special , which she was. I hope you take my advice You WILL NOT be disappointed. Led Zeppelin is one of those bands to watch live. They sound as good if not better live.

  • @JoinTheProgress

Jay, you nailed something at 5:05 without realizing it: this song is played in polymeter; the drums are in 4/4 time, the guitar/bass are in 9/8 time in the pre-chorus sections. For amateur Led Zep cover bands, this is one hecka' pain-in-the-az to deal with. It requires a seriously talented drummer to hold down that 4/4 while the guitar is doing gymnastics around it in 9/8; I'd know, I was in a cover band as a kid before I understood polymeter, and trying to nail this down as a guitarist at the time gave me a major headache.
    Cheers.

This album just celebrated its 50th anniversary a couple of days ago, and is often ranked as one of the best rock albums ever. Plenty has been written on the production and recording - as Rob noted, there's a lot of layering, even though there are only three instruments. For instance, drummer John Bonham recorded some of his parts at the bottom of a stairwell to give it a natural echo and doubling effect, and in the middle of this song, Jimmy Page's guitar has a couple of different takes stacked on top of each other so it sounds like he's accompanying himself. Huge sound from just four guys.
